Full PS2 B/C For PS3 Via Firmware Update "In Next Few Weeks?"
The rumor flood just can't be stopped: mere days after learning that Sony had filed for a patent that could lead to the return of full PS2 software backwards compatibility in the PS3, more evidence has arrived. ...and this new tidbit says it's not only coming; it'll be here in the next few weeks.
Since that time, we know the patents in question don't automatically imply backwards compatibility, as the machine has been emulating the Emotion Engine since the original graphics synthesizer chip disappeared from all models after the original 60GB iteration. However, this doesn't change the fact that the patent was filed in December of last year and was only made public just last week, and as we all know, you don't go and patent existing things. To add more fuel to the rapidly spreading fire, German website DemoNews.de claims to have received a direct comment from a Sony employee that says full PS2 b/c will return to the PS3 via firmware update within the "next few weeks." Obviously, as this is a European website, we have to assume they're referring to a SCEE employee, provided they're not telling tall tales. This would further imply that such a firmware update would be available simultaneously in all major regions, simply because the formerly mentioned patents were submitted in the US. Connect this together with the PS3 Slim rumors, and current and would-be PS3 owners have plenty to discuss.
If all this is indeed going down in the next two weeks or so, we'll have to say it'll likely be the biggest news of the month. Then again, you never can tell when an especially huge announcement will just pop up out of the blue... It has been known to happen before.

Although Sony said that the price drop happened because they still support their 10 year life cycle philosophy for the PS2 and that demand is still there for the console, I can infer that from a business standpoint, another reason they can issue a price drop is to get as much more PS2s in houses as much as possible before Sony feels it is the right time to move on from physically producing PS2s, and just incorporate PS2 backwards-compatibility to the PS3 by whatever means they can.

They should develop a dual-core EE chip and drop it in the psp2. One core for running the ps2 games and the other for emulating whatever else. It would make for kick-ass psp2 games too.
But i digress.

There's nothing to stop Sony doing this since they own all the designs and copyrights connected with implementing the PS2 in software, the technical issues are purely associated with solving the performance of the GS emulation.
It's totally logical to restore the BC through firmware (or through a PSN downloadable application) at this time since the PS2 is at the end of life. It's still in manufacture - yes, but it's definitely at the end of it's life. It would be a happy and logical coincidence for the PS3 to hit it's price sweetspot - $299 - this fall, for the slim PS3 to arrive this fall, for PS2 compatibility to be restored this fall and for the incoming wave of exclusives for the PS3 to drive things through fall, winter and into the Spring of 2010. It makes a lot of sense since the $299 pricepoint should be the one that encourages PS2 owners to upgrade, and putting PS2 compatibility back into the PS3 box would facilitate a lot of PS2 owners who are holding back.

As has been mentioned before, the Emotion Engine was never the big problem w/ software emulation, but the PS2 Graphic Synthesizer, and I don't recall the supposed Dec. '08 patent mentioning that.
I hate to say, but I won't believe it until I see it (or at least a valid Sony PR saying it's coming). Luckily, I have an original 60GB PS3 w/ a 4-year warranty!

I think that you don't really need a ps2 emulator to run a downloaded ps2 game since capcom releasing MvC2 and its not even the ps2 version its the dreamcast version, all they need to do is make a few adjustment to make it work on the ps3

However, in my opionon there's no way they will release the "new" ps3 this month, august sounds a tad too early as well. If I had to put my money down I'd go for sept/oct. Closer to the xmas sales.

Either way, I spent the $150, and SCE only took 11 days getting me a new one. All in all, I was pretty impressed with the Customer Service.

However, the "backwards" compatibility will backfire if it is region protected. Does the PS2 Region Bios come into play here? Hopefully the so-called emulation update will fix that most problematic issue.

I've had the same 60GB PS3 since it's November 17th, 2006 launch and haven't had a single problem with it and I've done all sorts of things to it. Try to install ubuntu on it, increased HDD space and put yellow dog on it, restored PS3 because linux wouldn't recognize wireless card and didn't have enough linux know how to make it work and PS3 runs just fine today.

My 60 GB died about 9 months after I got it (1 week after I picked up GTA IV). Since it was in the 1 year period, Sony replaced it for free, but I'd rather spend $150 on getting it fixed/replaced than going out and buying a new one for over twice that much. Of course, if all these rumors are true about a slim PS3 and a BC firmware update, and if that were to happen to me again, maybe I'd pick up the slim one to save some space around the TV.

In any case, it wasn't like the 360 where 10 out of 10 of my friends get the RROD whether Elite or Arcade bundle.
*offtopic: Anyways, do you know any online retailers that still sells 60GB PS3's to ship internationally? I don't trust e-bay and e-bay can't be registered in English (where I'm from).

Kudos to Sony ! Should have just left BC in all models to begin with ! I still play my PS2 games on my 60GB and I also play my PS3 games as well !
Playing PS2 games on a BC PS3 doesn't detract from PS3 games at all ! It just gives gamers another option for gaming !

I think ona huge part of the problem with the 60Gigger's is that they run super-hot, and you can really feel it when putting your hand near any of the "out" vents, especially the r/side.
My 60GB likes impersonating a ceramic heater!
So I put it up on 3 inch blocks to circulate more cool air under it, & then bolted a 4 speed vortex fan on the wall just inches above my PS3, to help suck out all that heat faster.
My 4month old(bought used from GS for over $500 w/warranty)is starting to give me a problem now & then.
Sometimes when I put a game in, it won't acknowledge that it's even sucked my game inside & show the disc icon, & go right into the game.
I have to pop the game out, turn the machine on & off a few times before it registers.
And other time's it works flawless, with no problems at all.
Thank goodness, I bought the 12 month warranty, so if it keeps doing it, GS said they'll find me another 60GB from one of their stores elsewhere.

Exactly, that's what i said a few days ago, anybody in the house who brought they hands near the right side would complain like "your machine really gives off heat" but the 80GBs aren't like that.

And that's exactly why I stopped standing my 60 gigger upright, it gets so hot that if the heat affects any of that soldering, I don't want it melting & running right down the motherboard.
If that happened, then the solder would have to be reflowed, & to do it the correct way uses a very specialized $40,000 reflow machine.
Another reason for YLOD is the power supply has a failure in a one of the capacitors or diode.
That's a reflow job too, but much more time consuming due to having tracing down each & every capacitor & diode till they find the one that's not working.
And another is the BD drive or laser failure.
Anyways, here's a giant thread on the Playstation Board about all the PS3's that got the YLOD, and it seems that the 60GB model has the overall majority of failures.
BTW, if your machine has YLOD'd too(no matter what GB model) they're asking you to add your PS3 to their list & database. If they get enough and can prove that the YLOD isn't a fluke but a serious problem, then I think they're hoping Sony will wind up repairing them due to defects, similar to MS had to do.
Hopefully Sony will have most of these failures solved & corrected with the new "slim", but until they do......

i was playing burnout paradise than the game froze nothing responded even holding the ps button.
so i reset the system than it wouldent read any bluray disks, dvd were fine just bluray.
so i rang sony and his first question was how hot is the system, and i couldent hold my hand there for more than 10 seconds because it was burning my hand.
ive NEVER had a comp run that hot on me never.
sony have a serious heat distribution problem.
