Sony "Promises" GT5 Will Release This Fiscal Year

Racing fans everywhere have been hoping that Gran Turismo 5 will launch this year, and because series creator Kazunori Yamauchi recently said they could release it "whenever they wanted," the rumors intensified.

However, the newest update says the hotly anticipated simulated racer won't make it in 2009, but it should hit store shelves before the end of March 2010. According to Euro website VideoGamesZone.de, Sony "promises" that GT5 will release before the current fiscal year ends. For those of you who judiciously avoid the business end of the industry (and we can't blame you; it gets kinda boring), Sony's fiscal year ends on March 31, so you do the math. Now, if it does come out in March, this will put it in direct competition with SCEA's God of War III, which is scheduled to release that very same month. If Polyphony doesn't wish to embark on that epic battle, it would make a little more sense to launch GT5 in January...that's just logic talking. Then again, as the source in question doesn't specifically mention the name of the Sony representative that has supposedly confirmed this release window, we have to take this all with a grain of salt. Really, the fall-winter release schedule is pretty well packed, so GT5 will have competition no matter what.

Of course, for the hardcore racing fans, it won't matter what the competition might be...GT5 is the most-wanted title. Right?

I don't mind if it gets released w/the Holiday games or w/God of War. However, it'd be very difficult to find time (hours) to play this game and the others that are coming out.

In other words, it's a guaranteed purchase (for me) but there won't be enough hours in the day to play this and the other exclusives :-P

To be honest, this game has no competition, not even God of War, plus god of war last for like 10 hours - GT5 is 1000+ hours if you put your heart in to it.

Not ragging down on God of War III or anything as I am getting both on their release day.
I am buying pretty much all PS3 exclusives that are coming.

also these two games are way too different
they are both aimed at different audiences
as for me i will be buying GoW3 over everything because my favorite type of games are action adventure

As far as gaming franchises exclusive to the PS3 go. The Gran Turismo series has absolutely no rival. So, while I agree that GoW is a mildly popular franchise, nothing makes people wet their pants more than Gran Turismo.

It don't matter for me when this game comes out. It will be a purchase no matter what. Most gamers will do the same, however if they release during the holidays, the casual gamers may not pick this up right away as they may have to choose between several good titles.

Seems their biggest problem now is putting the release at the right time to maximize profits. I still think xmas is the right time. Even if you get other games as gifts you'll still wanna pick this up with your own money.

They should really have it out this christmas. Theres going to be a ton of great games this fall, but only one great racer (if gt5 hits this fall). It would also be interesting to see how Forza 3 fairs against GT5 in sales, which can really only be compared if they are released around the same time.

I think the best for Sony would be that - If there is a PS3 Slim and would be a price cut, then the reasonable turn would be realease of a PS3 slim bundle with GT5 and Gow3. Ofcourse after their separate release dates. Sony would gain a very good profit, I think.

Maybe they are waiting for Sony spies to report back on when Forza 3 is coming out so they can be sure to crush it into a fine powder properly.

If the game is ready now, why wouldn't you want to release it this holiday season? Isn't that the best possible time to launch a game, when everybody is shopping for Christmas gifts and whatnot? If you could launch a game in November, and it was ready to launch in November, why on Earth would you wait until January or even as late as March to launch it? Seriously... Why from a business sense would Sony want to do that? Even with other major game releasing at the same time I would still think the initial sales would be exquisite, and as Ben mentioned, there is competition straight through March anyway.

When told that the game won't ship until next calendar year, i assume that either the game isn't actually ready to ship (and won't be for some time) or the person who claimed it won't launch this calendar year is lying.

Gran Turismo 5 will probably the first GT game that I'm going to buy. It's gonna be awesome playing GT5 on the ps3 especially if you have an lcd tv.

I don't think the resolution of the HDTV is that critical for gaming experience. FWIW, I think my games looked a little better on my 720p TV than my new 1080p model.

Yeah, i heard 720p plays better for games because it's a smaller resolution so they can put more without worrying about the stress on the processor and such, so it's able to do more even though it looks just as good.

Oh, come on Ben? You KNOW that the real competition isn't with another "PS3" titles. The real competition is FORZA 3 (who's developer boldly claimed that his racing game is the most "definitive" this generation). Not to mention NFS: Shift.

As of now, all PS3 exclusives do not compete with each other, they team up! I'LL BUY F&CKIN both if it comes out the same month (hell my Birthday is in MARCH). Going to be the best B-day present!

Moving on, Kazunori's statement quite disturbed me when he said "he could release it anytime". I mean, is he not worried about the competition between Forza 3 and NFS: Shift? I thought the delay was for extra touch-ups? HMM.......

Polyphony is CONFIDENT in their game and thus isn't worried about the competition. Yes, they shouldn't be too 'casual' but at the same time, look at their track record.

In any event, the latter part of 09 and early '10 will be very good times

True, their track record is all in the 9's. However, facing tremendous scrutiny for not including damage control in ANY of the GT games previously. I'm pretty sure Kazunori always planned for damage but it better be on GT5. Either the game is truly complete, or they're releasing "expansion" packs in the later times to come. I believe that a new G25 wheel will be released alongside GT5.

GT5 will be the penultimate racing sim. Ive bought every version at release and I don't plan on changing that. I agree that if they want to make the most money (console sales and game sales), It would make more sense to release this for the holidays.

I dunno why but I get this funny feeling they will release it for Xmas 2009 alongside the new PS3 Slim/ or with a price cut they've been holding off.... That to me make perfect business sense. If they do it they will own the holiday season....

Either way I know it will be epic and I will buy it on day 1... Strange enough it's one game I don't mind waiting for...

its pathetic how much time its taken them to make this game, im realy starting to get sick of sonys attitude of announce a game than release it 3 years later.
they wave their balls around saying look at us weve got all these exclusives this year, than come august or so at least half of them have slipped to next year.
enough is enough, i thought they would of learnt their lesson with home........ looks like i was wrong.

whenever it releases my husband will be happy. not my kinda game but I know my hubby really wants it. If it takes a little longer to perfect it so it doens't need a update to fix issues that should of been fixed in development i don't care when it's released.

This is the first Racer that I WILL buy a racing wheel for. Ive never had one but I recently lost my standard Mustang (wifey wrecked it, she was fine car...not so lucky) so I need my shifting fix. Nothing is like a standard, you have every bit of power at your disposal....

My guess is that it will release in late January/early-mid February. Then it won't have to suffer the post-holiday period, neither does it have to really compete with God of War III. It'd make the most sense actually.

Sony had to leave some big news for TGS 2009.

That is where Sony will announce a worldwide release for GT5: November or December 2009.
