Valve Looking For "Dedicated, Talented PS3 Guys"

As most of you know by now, we aren't the biggest fans of Valve Software...primarily because they have egos the size of Montana and have offered lame excuses as to why they won't develop for the PlayStation 3.

And in all honesty, we don't really care if they do; it's not like they pump out 25 games a year; somehow, we'll find a way to survive without Left 4 Dead and the next Half-Life installment. That being said, however, it seems Valve may be coming around to the idea of PS3 development: according to Joystiq, Valve's Doug Lombardi said the studio was "up on the idea" of designing games for Sony's new machine; they just want to wait until they've hired a few decent PS3 coders. He made this statement at the recent Left 4 Dead 2 event in London yesterday, which, by the way, celebrates a game that isn't coming to the PS3. Lombardi cited the Metacritic scores of The Orange Box and how the PS3 version clearly wasn't up to snuff and added:

"...we have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys and then all bets are off. We can take the same sort of strides and get the quality out of the box and offer the same support post-launch on that platform, as well."

This is a good sign that Valve may soon announce a project that is destined for the PS3, and this should satisfy fans of the developer. On the other hand, and we hate to beat a dead horse here, but we have to bring your attention to the last Valve statement concerning the PS3. Essentially, they said the PS3 was just "too complex," which we immediately countered with the belief that they didn't have the talent in the studio to handle the intricate machine. Die-hard fans laughed at the idea, but uh...I think we're vindicated now.

so how did they make the best FPS shooter ever.
and one of the most popular games online still today after how many years.
im talking about half life and counter strike.
still to this day decades after half life was out we STILL dont have a game that had as much impact as that.
and i can only think of 1 game that had a deeper story MGS4 thats it.
they may be lazy pathetic wankers, but that dont mean they have no talent.
develop for the ps3 i couldent care less, as long as half life stays as a PC exclusive.
a watered down copy of crysis 2 is bad enough.

Smart move in their part.Now they wouldn't have to waste their so-called precious valuable time learning the PS3 and maybe make some ps3 owners happy by making a PS3 Left4dead,Half-life or whatever else they make(not that I care).

I rented it...glad I didn't buy it. I was kind of dissapointed after all the hype. I don't know what it is about half life's gameplay..but I just can't ever get into it. It's as though something is missing, I just don't know what.

What do they develop besides FPS? Anything worthwhile that we could possibly say has potential?

I think Valve realized how much money they are missing out by dismissing the PS3 platform. It's a business just like Metal Gear opening to all platforms.

If you're going to cuss someone out and accuse them of a very specific wrong than the least you can do is offer some proof to your claims. Basic logic explains the burden is on the accuser to offer some form of evidence which supports their argument. Imo Ben,

This is merely more damage control from the company that prophecied the utter failure of the PS3. Fast forward a year from then, and you have a tad less caustic and insulting rhetoric, fast forward to today, and they merely continue to backtrack from their original stance.

They realize they've given the finger to a constituency that's now bordering on 24 million, and they realize that eventually, they're going to have to develope for the PS3, simply because it's a revenue source that can't be ignored.

But, I'm betting that any move to start developement on the PS3, will be so far down the road, so as to not make Valve look like they're caving.

L4D could be more fun that KZ2 but could it look better? Not possible, and actually KZ2 is pretty fun. Anyway, Valve should already have "talented ps3 guys" as a part of the development team. Whats the point of trying to develop multiplat if you can't even understand a certain console, and in my opinion. I could not live without the next Half Life installment, I HAVE to know what happens next, stupid cliff hangers....

I attribute Valve's recent faults to their PC minded approach. They're a PC developer and while they do release content for the 360 it's just a trickle down from their PC projects. They alienated the PS3 fan base with their comments in the last year. As a PS3 owner and a long time Valve supporter I urge everyone to forgive and look forward to another developer hopefully supporting the platform.

Nah, I think it's more like a 360.
They will soon say that they could not find any 'talented' developers, and they will go back to the Microsoft platforms.
Then, maybe in another 5 to 10 years, they'll try and find a PS4 developer, which will lead to all of this starting again. :(

Does anyone know if the PS4 will allow you to import your PS3 friends?
It would be kinda stupid to not have the feature to import your PS3 friends to your shinny new PS4.

I used to have a lot of respect for the valve team. The Half-Life games were incredible, and Left 4 Dead is one hell of a fun game. I hate Newell for all his anti-PS3 crap, but I'm not going to bash the good stuff they made. It seems like they are starting to regret not supporting PS3 games earlier, which will come back to haunt them, but if they can come out with some good PS3 stuff and actually follow it through after launch, I will buy their games.

But right now, they have a lot to make up for.

Valve is a PC Developer period,and in that they are the best period..

weather you like fps or not,weather you want to acknowledge it or not wolfenstain created (to a Point)fps,where as VALVE and ID revolutionized it.

hell,i bought the orange box,6 months before i bought my ps3,knowing its issues...

left for dead,is also another game i very much want to play,but alas i dont own a 360,and seen as i prefer the ps controller because of analog sticks,over the x-box,the thought of l4d comming to ps3 makes me happy.,now the only exclusive microsoft has over sony(that i care for),is HALO...

I'm glad you agree with me. I feel bad you don't own L4D for the PC. It is such a blast to play. The 360 version lacks a lot of what makes the PC game so great (dozens of new campaigns released each week for the PC by the community).

@ slayerkillemall - You're not making sense. id was the dev behind Wolfenstein. They didn't revolutionize the fps, they singlehandedly created the genre. Valve was one of the first to come along and add an actual story to the tech yes, but with that done they're now out of ideas and have gone to developing L4D which is basically co-op Doom. They are far from being the best PC dev. That award still goes to Blizzard.

yea,i need to get a desktop first,what i currently have is a laptop,which i doubt it may be able to run it.

Well I believe you can indeed run L4D with those system specs. However you would be reduced to the lowest settings and Source is already a rather old engine so the lowest settings are nothing special. An easy and free solution would be to simply download the L4D demo off steam and try it out on your laptop.

Never hurts to try the demo. Or just go to System Requirements Lab website and use "Can You Run It?" to see if you can play it.

Think they finally woke up and found that there IS money to be made on the PS3!!! Burnt there bridge and now here they come swiming back for help lol! There effort on the PS3 might be too late because every other developer is WAY AHEAD of valve and people might not want to put up with their half ass attempt.

- Must have world class PS3 game development skills.
- Must be willing to be treated as a second class citizen for stupidly dedicating your career to a platform which is a waste of time.
- Must never complain or get in the way of the team's PC developers who do real work.
- Must be available on demand to pick up hamburgers for Gabe Newell so our PC developers can finally have time to write code rather than spending all of their time on the way to or from Burger King.

On a serious note though, I actually dont mind valves games on the pc at all, they were very good. Valve has never really been the issue. just Gabes delusional comments at the start when he said some thing like...."PS3 will fail because no one can program for it"..........lol, crashed and burned big time.

Is it just me or did Valve once said they'll stop supporting the PS3 at one point? This has gone to a totally new direction. Maybe they realized that they can't ignore 25 + million units worldwide.

I may hate Valve for not putting effort for the PS3, but I still think the Orange Box is one of the best purchases bought for the PS3 (that's how good the game is, despite the issues). But, I heard it was EA that published the game so it's Kudos to them.

Maybe Guerilla Games should open a PS3 school as they're one of the few guys that says "The PS3 is easier to develop than the PS2". Valve and other developers can learn a lot from them.

Anyways, I'm willing to forgive once Valve has decided to put more effort to the PS3. I mean Epic Games provided a superior port of Unreal Engine 3.0 (in the form of Unreal Tournament 3), so there should be no excuses.

If you really wanted to work with the PS3, you would've hired a dedicated PS3 team way back when you were actually floating all those ideas around, for Big Daddy Warbucks(also known as M$).

I'm just waiting for the YouTube vid showing a steady stream of armored MS Brinks delivery trucks and Oscar Weinermobiles, idling away in your parking lot.

And then I'd make book on just who's fat Wooly Mammoth'ed a$$ they'd be eagerly awaiting to gluttenize!

half life 2 epp 3 has been in the spot light for ages and we still have no details no release date no nothing.

Hmmm

Valve have had quite a bad attitude to the PS3 in the past, but it's obviously good news if they are trying to make something work on the PS3.

I mean all of you saying you don't care about valve and stuff, Half Life is actually an epic series. L4D was ok in my opinion, but i got bored quite quickly and haven't played it much at all being honest. I really would like it if we got the next half life episode though.

why are we praising these guys for actually doing there job? yay, there developing for the PS3, i don't really give a $hit about Valve. There biased, lazy, and behind the profit margins other developers are at because they chose to make watered down versions of there big PC brothers for one console. Frankly I think that they can keep there low tech. games and us PS3 owners will continue to enjoy our high quality and highly original games, ex. KZ2. Screw Valve, i can live w/o Half Life 2 and L4D 2.

Tell you what, the day I see Gabe Newell playing a PS3 game and enjoying it, I'll believe that Valve means it.
