GameStop Taking FFXIII Pre-Orders
Just as a personal note, I distinctly recall pre-purchasing Final Fantasy VIII a full year in advance. The only additional tidbit of this story worth mentioning was the fact that the game did indeed come out on the very day that EB had in its database.
If you wander into your local GameStop this weekend, you may want to drop five bucks on Final Fantasy XIII, which is now available for pre-order. Obviously, you can't really expect them to have the finalized written-in-stone launch date, but just for the record, it's June 21, 2010. However, given what we know, that date may be more accurate than you think: if FFXIII really does launch in Japan towards the end of this year, and the localization process takes the normal 6-8 months, June 21 appears to be a fitting date for North America. If you're not a big fan of GameStop, you can also pre-order the game at Amazon, but their estimated release date is a bit more discouraging: December 21, 2010. Both retailers make it clear that dates are subject to change, and if you want a chuckle, check out GameStop's disclaimer; something about the Roman numerals always throwing them off. The only real upside to this is that we're relatively certain Square-Enix will toss in some sort of pre-order incentive, so perhaps you can get the jump on whatever that turns out to be.
Final Fantasy XIII is guaranteed to be one of the biggest 2010 releases, but let's not forget that the online Final Fantasy XIV is scheduled to release next year, too...

Official pricing and release dates have not been announced by the publisher. These are estimates only and subject to change. Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Square Enix’s insistence on naming Final Fantasy games with Roman numerals throws us off a bit. As soon as we get a concrete release date on FFXIII, like XII/IV/MMVII or I/VIII/MMVIII, we’ll let you know ASAP. Worry Free Guarantee - if the price decreases between the time you place your preorder and the release date, you’ll receive the lowest price.

As for FFIII, it was the first game to have summons, which is one of the iconic items of the series.
But in anycase i think this game is looking phenominal, it will certainly make up for X-2 and XII (I'm not going through them both again.)

As for in game battle, i liked the fact that there were no random encounters, but it got awfully repetative after a few hours, all you really needed was Attack, bubble, haste and Cure and your set and the occassional summon every. I found the other FF games requiring me to experiment with more skills unlike this one.
but its not that gameplay which bugs me, its the lack of plot and bland characters (not including Balthier). youd just run though areas with no real objective.

One other guy doesn't like it because he can't use Summon (making it more of a challenge).
Interesting
By the way, the story opinions I'm hearing here hold no weight behind them. None of you explain why you didn't like the story.
In fact I'll go far and say that none of you understood the game.
Just because you don't understand the more mature story of FFXII and because it doesn't have a "save the princess" romantic bull. Doesn't mean it's a bad game.
The plot just went away from Teenager with problems and a cute princess. To a world of ideals and a band of very diverse peoples who go together on an epic journey. <---It really is a beautiful game in every regard. For a game to be great it doesn't need the moochy moochy crap.
The ones who complain 'bout X-2 are even worse.
In any case, XIII looks like crap at the moment. It might change when I do play it, but I've been 'round rpgs long enough so I know this'll be a failure, but we'll see.

I see some of you are curious which console will get more pre-orders. Don't know why it matters, it isn't like customers keep up with and follow through with those things. So the number of pre-orders won't equal copies sold for that week's release. Also, you wouldn't be going out on a limb to say FF13 will sell better on PS3. Think about it: by June 21st (my god what a ridiculous wait, thanks SE & MS!), there will be FAR more PS3 owners. Add together the great lineup of GT5, GOW3, etc. with a $299 price tag, and it's simple to predict really. I know those things sound redundant by now, but it's true.

THe game just didnt lead to anywhere apart from a few occassions, like when your kidnapped after the temple or... the end. you constantly went through places like Jahara
and there was no real point in going there.

Aside from that I have the following problem with the game:
- couldn't control summons (useless)
- couldn't control 4th character (somewhat useless)
- probability of having right item in chest was silly
- no/little uniqueness of characters in combat (everyone started in almost the exact same place on the board)
- no New Game+
- if you oversold certain items they were gone and you couldn't have weapons synthed from them
- had to not open certain chests to get ultimate weapon
Now sure, you can say "not using summons makes it more challenging", but really, this game makes the summons pretty useless. Using them could actually put you in a very bad position. The things above didn't make it challenging/interesting, they made it boring/stupid.
A lot of these things were fixed in the International Edition, they even added a double gamespeed button and added job boards to make gameplay more fun, but that wasn't released outside of japan.
FFXII is the only FF game I never bothered playing through again, the above things were just too stupid.
I really hope, I do not see a lot of those things in FFXIII.

I hope they are joking about the roman numerals, if that screws them up then they really ARE incompetent. BTW I have a thread about preorder and CE edition goodies, drop by and speak up:

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with the last 2 games. Sure I had fun with FFXI and FFXII, but each one of these had some pretty stupid features.
FFXI didn't have much solo/1-3 people content until years into its release. FFXII had things such as run back 3 load screens and hope this time the treasure chest has the right item.
The International edition looked like it fixed a lot of things, but it's sad it wasn't actually an international edition.
Think I'll wait on these two titles and see how they come out. I hope they are awesome games, but after the last 2 games, I'm somewhat skeptical =/
