PS3 Slim Video Leaked: "It's Real"

With the deception the Internet can afford these days, it can be difficult to say something is "real" and we refuse to label anything "official" until we hear it from Sony. But even so, this has certainly kicked off a massive Internet stir.

It seems a video of the PS3 Slim from the Philippines has been leaked, and as you can see, it evidently shows the fancy new PS3 Slim being sold very prematurely by an underground street vendor. Supposedly, the system has a 120GB hard drive, two USB ports, a PS3 icon instead of "PlayStation 3," no card readers, and a few other interesting cosmetic tidbits. For instance, it seems the "touch" button eject is gone, and although the vendor was selling it with the Dual Shock 3, we don't know if that's the default controller for this new machine. As for a price, it all boils down to about $410 in American money, but that doesn't really help us determine an actual retail cost. Not long after this video was leaked, a GameTrailers employee has said "Sony can't keep leaks" and this PS3 Slim "is real." The last we heard about the PS3 Slim was that Sony might actually be working to phase out one of the models currently available (the 80GB one, it seems), and that we might see the thinner machine on store shelves before the summer was over. Others believe we won't hear an announcement until the Tokyo Game Show in the fall.

For our part, we don't really want to speculate further. All we can remember is Jack Tretton standing on the stage at E3 and making a joke; he thanked everyone for coming, even if they did already know a few of the big announcements...you know, like the PSP Go.

I feel so bad for Sony;They try and try but can't keep anything under wraps.I bet right now they must be thinking how they can disprove it the consoles existence.With a small price cut this baby will be flying off the shelf's everywhere although Japan wouldn't require a price cut for that to happen.

Either way, the current model is the better version so those who want a more complete version of the ps3 have to hurry up or get stuck with the slim

The specs and design seems logical. They have been selling horrible compared with last year, so far. They barely sold 10 million last year, to sell 13 million this year, the slim has to be real. If xbox remain 10 million sales this year, that means PS3 catches up by 3 million to xbox.

I hope this is real. I want more exclusives back to PS3. I want to see what possibilities there are for RPGs this gen. I have not seen anything exceptional RPG in PS3 so far.

Maybe with the official announcement they will also announce firmware 3.0 with ps2 backward compatibility? That would make a huge surge of sales this fall and will keep current 80/40gb owners on sony's side.

Sony may have an assembly facility there. Even if the electronics are made in China, it's possible that the retail packages may be assembled elsewhere, or that one of the contracted manufacturers of the new PS3 has a Philippines facility. Either way, I highly doubt that a Philippine retailer somehow got stock early and one has made it's way out to be sold on video.

i'd say it was fake 2, had i not seen pics from a Chinese factory, and heared that story bout the gamestop worker (or manager cant remember) who called some head honcho down @ Sony, and inquired about the pictures of the new slim. The reply from the Sony Rep. was, "They released them already?" that alone says Plausible... now this pops up with the same model as shown in the pics?

Okay, if this real, Sony is seriously losing their sense of style. First the PSP GO! Now this. My bulky glossy 60 GB would dominate this, if they were ever compared physically. Why isn't the ps3 slim glossy? That was one of the most attractive superficial qualities of the ps3; now Sony will just strip that away? I was expecting a better looking console, but whatever, I am sticking with my 60 GB. If it is $300 or less, I would say it is a good buy; but I if it is $400 or over, then I wouldn't be suprise to see myself being begged by employees at an electronic store to purchase a ps3 slim.

Why isn't the ps3 slim glossy? That was one of "the most attractive qualities of the ps3."

You may not remember this, but the glossy finish of the PS3 was a major liability at launch thanks to the legion of fanboy critics who burned Terabytes of Internet capacity bitching about the glossy finish and it's likelihood to pickup finger prints, smudges and dust. It'll be incredibly ironic if Sony get's criticized for a non-glossy finish on the PS3 slip model by the very same folks who botched up a storm about the glossy finish in the first place. Sadly few if any will remind these two-faced folks of their previous comments about the glossy finish.

Well you see, I personally, and some people might share the same perspective the topic, like a glossy finish. Of course fanboys complained! They complained about the lack of games, the controller, the price, the size, everything [yes I rhymed]. Yes, fanboys complain about everything. This is not breaking news. You shouldn't account fanboys opinions because well..... they are fanboys! You should account the actual users or owners of the ps3. Alot of people seemed to like the glossy finish. I never heard much complain about it. If I decide to purchase the ps3 slim, it would feel like I was going back to the ps2 era because the ps3 slim pretty much looks like the ps2 slim.

that makes as much sense as

and who said it looked like ps2 slim?? um ok, i guess i could see it, if this 1 had a bit more rectangular cube look, with a pop open disk door... but it doesn't...

I personally think this system looks ACE! and will buy 2 day 1 if they are 299... if they are 399, il just buy one...

but 1 last thing... this further supports the rumor that the slim will be out by the end of the month...

It's rather hard to keep a secret when some twit at a 3rd party you have a contract with for manufacturing something, decides to break confidentiality. In the current age of Information, one breach of confidentiality can be on a million screens inside an hour, long before anyone can react. So I do feel sorry for Sony, it's basically impossible to keep a secret unless it's kept entirely in-house and everyone working on the project can be trusted.

Nintendo probably has a long relationship with their main 3rd party hardware manufacturers.

Sony has their controllers made in China. This new ps3 version in the Phillipines(?), etc.

So they probably don't have a CENTRAL company they can always go to and trust.

Looks completely fake, the logo looks like the PS2's instead of the PS3's new font which resembles Spiderman font. Other than that, the console looks uglier than any other console of its generation

the phat had "PS2" in their font, but the slim had the "Playstation 2" word logo in the ps1 font...

this looks like an attractive new "update" to ps2 font... but what does font matter??

the guy in the video probably be better off selling it on ebay for 2-5 thousand dollars than selling it on the streets for 410 if he really wanted to make money. also he needs to clarify how he got his hands on it or most people would probably think its fake.

It actually depend on which store you go to. If it's just an outside market where Bumbay's are (Muslims, if your Filipino you know this. LOL. not racist), then it's fake. If this is somewhere in the malls game shop, then it's real. There's a game store in the Philippines called Circuit City, LOL. And back in ps1, ps2 days they always get early version of the game and hardware, before it comes out State/UK side. So maybe this is real, we'll see.

No, I have a 40GB system right next to me and it hasn't got any memory card slots and only has two USB ports.

Didn't the memory card reader get lost in the first design cuts? I'm sure the memory card reader is missing from the 40GB systems and all those manufactured since.

No, the new 80GB and 180GB systems don't have the reader either, no, and they only have two USB ports. Sony's cost cutting was quite thorough.

I've always felt that they should have two SKUs a premium unit with card reader, four (or more) USB ports and PS2 compatibility, and a core unit which is just a PS3 like the current 40/80/160GB units. A lot of people would happily pay a premium for the additional features, especially if Sony got really generous and threw in an HDMI cable.

Perhaps with the arrival of the Slim, Sony will re-think and introduce a 'premier' SKU with all that stuff? Unfortunately I think that the local pig farm is more likely to witness it's pigs in a formation fly-past than we are to witness a premium SKU with all that from Sony.

The US launch 20GB did not have any card readers. The US launch 60GB did. The 80GB (MotorStorm and MGS4) models do have card readers. I have one of each. The 40GB and all subsequent models no longer contained any card readers and they even took away things like SACD support.

Yeah, the SACD support was - if I remember correctly, provided by the PS2 compatibility hardware in both the original 20/60 models and the BC capable 80-GB model.

The 40GB and all since have been quite basic by comparison.

Indeed. I always tell anyone with an original 60GB system that if it ever fails, they should use the Sony repair service, and double check with Sony (bet it in writing) to ensure that they will definitely get the exact same model of PS3 returned to them. They are very unique pieces of hardware.

Even if you could actually see the PS3 in that video, I wouldn't believe it. Like OYASHIRO said, it just wasn't good enough quality. Don't think that the camera shaking, and the intense bright light behind the system were just inconveniences. Somebody is laughing at us all right now.

If they were really selling slim PS3s then somebody would have already bought it and made a much better video and probably a demonstration.

If this is real, why doesn't it look as attractive as the original model? It's not shiny, it doesn't have the playstation 3 logo, it doesn't have the touch sensors, and it doesn't have the silver chrome. It doesn't make sense why sony would leave them out from the console's design. Unless this is fake.

i am not interested in the least for a PS3 slim, I am happy with my currenct machine with 80G and b/c, and I plan to use it in the next 8-10 years as sony expected. My focus is on the coming up line of games, i.e. Demon's souls, Bayonetta, Asassin's Creed 2, Resonance of Fate, WKC, The last guardian, GOW3, FF13 and v13 etc.

I don't think its real at all!!! It teminds me of the "PopStation" shitty piece of plastic with nothing going on in side. Kind of like them cheap ass swapmeet products. You can see its a FAKE cuz the "PS3" logo DOES NOT MATCH THE FONT THAT SONY USES!!!!

@ Jojoman, no its not impossible for them to change the font but, Sony recentley changed the "PS3" font slightly (look at the vids from E3). But this new font doesn't match the font on this slim console. So why would they change it just to change it again in a month? Makes no sense.

For this reason I think the console in the vid is fake.

Okay now am not buying this story, at least for now.
Why?

Everybody, take any of your PS3 Blu Ray cases and look at the spine(where its got the BLES and PS3 Logo). Now do you see that PS3 FONT in black with the red background? Now that's the original FONT for the name "PS3" not PLAYSTATION 3. So why should Sony ignore that "PS3" logo for this new phony font?

I'm personally not going to believe it myself. Not until Sony makes an announcement, not that I care, my 60g BC is much more useful to me.

That having been said, I really hope, seriously hope...that these leakers are killed. I'm not sugar coating it, I'd like them dead. And Sony should put their heads on pikes outside Corporate HQ, just as a warning to any future douchebags who want to fu** around with their marketing strategy.

That's extreme, sure, but honestly, I couldn't care less. Sony's _trying_ to get their ball moving, and no matter what they do, some jerkoff with zero morales/ethics, continues to release information ahead of schedule. Why's it a big deal? Well, most companies have timeframes when they make big announcements, geared for maximum effect. E3's a good example, lots and lots of new stuff was announced, creating hype around MS, Nintendo and Sony respectively. The problem is, a good chunk of Sony's side was already known, because some jerkoff who still remains among the living, won't shut the fuck up.

Yes Ben, you and I have run afoul of this whole freedom of press thing, and I've not holding anything against you because of this, but this guy needs to die. Sony should be given the same amount of respect as Nintendo/Microsoft, who enjoy a great amount of secrecy and discretion over their news releases.

And again, just for emphasis and reaffirmation, the leaker should be killed.

The employees of Sony, its manufacturers and whoever else involed in developing etc. will be bound by disclosure contracts so if the leakers are caught Im sure there will be serious consequences for their actions.

Sony will announce the Slim when they're ready. They didn't announce the PSP Go when it got leaked, so they aren't going to announce the slim just because some street merchant filled a box with rocks and stamped a ps3 logo on the side.

I think there should be two PS3s on the market: the PS3 Slim console and the PS3 Slim center-of-entertainment console.

even if this is real its ugly as sin and prefer the "fatter" style much more as of right now.

None the less im calling b.s. I dont think Sony would market THAT machine we just seen in that video. Obviously we will most likely see a slim, but a much more finished and "polished" PS3 slim.

I wont believe a thing i see or hear until i hear or see Sony say this new model we will be arriving in stores on xx/xx/xxxx!

Wow that is such a fake, theirs no way sony would make it look that crappy. The logo is so off from the orginal, they would never get rid of the usb ports plus i can't see them changing the disc drive and button. Until i hear it from sonys mouth i don't believe it.

Oh BTW getting the 160 gig this week, can't say no it comes with Killzone,LBP and uncharterd for 499.99 :) man can't wait.... I;ve told the hubby he gets me that i dont' want anything for christmas this is all i want.

Mexico is known for marking up the retail cost of electronics by a significant amount. The launch price of the PS3 in Mexico was $974. That is roughly a 30% markup on $600. Just as $410 is 30% markup for $300.

Expect the new PS3 slim to be priced around $300.

I lived in the Philippines and I believe that it's a fake! There are a lot of imitation items that can be found on our country. If there will be a PS3 slim, Sony will be the first one to show it to us.

You seem to be forgetting all of the features the Sony took away earlier.
B/C, 4 reader card slots, 2 USB ports, and some other inner workings.

Plus the tech inside the machine is will be smaller too.

So yeah, I guess they can now do a magical "Honey, I shrunk the PS3" now.
