Capcom On SFIV: Sagat And Seth "A Little Stronger Than Expected"

How many times have you fighting fans screamed at the screen, "he's overpowered! It's so fu**ing lame! I hate this sh**"...? And how many times have you wanted the developer to simply stand up and admit their mistake?

Well, your day has finally come: if you're one of many who believed that Seth and Sagat had unfair advantages over their opponents in Street Fighter IV, Capcom is about to vindicate your beliefs. According to VideoGamer, SFIV assistant producer Ryota Niitsuma admitted that both characters were too powerful. When asked if any of them had an unfair edge, he responded, "Well, first of all I might have to apologize! Does he involve being slightly blinded and scarred [laughs]?" He then went on to say that both Sagat and Seth "might have turned out a little stronger than expected," but maintained that skilled players could still beat them with other fighters. However, in the recent "Street Fighter IV European Championship," the UK's Ryan Hart beat France's Alioune Camara...and both players picked Sagat. In this way, Niitsuma's comments about "anybody can beat anybody" seems out of whack, but then again, none of the top 3 SFIV players in the world use either Sagat or Seth; two use Ryu and the other uses Dhalsim. It may be an ongoing debate amongst fighting purists, but when one of the game's designers freely admits that two of the characters might be too powerful...well, that's a pretty big deal.

Now, all we need is to have some RPG developers admit that AI enemies cheat every now and then (oh yes, another critical hit when I'm low on health...amazing), and we'll be all set.

Seths teleporting move really pisses me off, Capcom should patch it out

I haven't notice that with Sagat anytime I use Ken and Ryu. Seth is just cheap dude still can pull off moves if you block them from that kick up spinning pile drive move, to that no touching combo he piles off and that suck in and spit out move that saps half or all your health.

Strange thing the first time I faced Seth with Ryu I didn't experience that much trouble with him but after that it was like pulling a tooth out of Godzilla's mouth with that thing from the board game "Operation"

Sagat is one of my primary fighters. I do agree his attacks are stronger than other fighters' but his reaction/speed make up for it on the bad side of things, in my opinion.

If they want to 'adjust' things, they should also adjust some fighter's ultras (Blanka, Abel). :-P

Take Sagat, thumb on the leftstick, finger on the RT and that's it. His Heavy Kicks do a great deal of damage. His Super Combo and Ultra Combo are 98% successful. Only player i used to beat Seth on the first encounter.

Sagat is the King of SFIV period.

I had a harder time beating Seth with Sagat than with almost any other character. I beat Seth first try Zangief. 2nd try with El Fuerte. About the 30th or so try with Sagat.

LoL, while I agree that Sagat is a badass in IV. I completely disagree about Seth. I play nightly, 20-40 matches with my brother and a few others and Seth, well, Seth is like Shin Akuma, or Ultimate Rugal from CvS2, may hit for allot, but once you get your hands on him, you'll destroy him.

Of course, the same could also be said, power wise, for Blanka in CvS2 (Capcom vs SNKII: Mark of the Millenium). He was unstoppable in that game.

Oh yeah, and gimme Gran Turismo 5!!!!

That is all.

RL Players =/= Computers. I don't think anyone is complaining about Seth in the hands of a person because they simply just can't do the s*** the computer does. Always instantly teleporting and grabbing you from behind with seriously no time to do anything about it, it's pretty BS.

Playing against Seth, in the hands of the computer, is simply a matter of learning curves. It's always been that way with the Bosses of Street Fighter, plain and simple. If you think M. Bison was any easier in 2, I'd suggest going back and check that out again. Or try beating Shin Akuma/Ultimate Rugal in story mode, in CvS2. Also, quite difficult.

It may seem BS, but remember, as with all SF's, the difficulty increases each match you get into, in story mode. I wouldn't want it any other way really. I detested Marvel vs Capcom for just this reason. The end boss was a joke.

I'm not trying to dis anyone, far from it. Simply, I've been playing Street Fighter games almost everyday, for the past 12 years or so. Give or take a week or two here and there. It's simply the same amount of difficulty you'd see with any end boss.

However, give players the time to learn Seth, as we've all had with M Bison, and I'd venture to guess that eventually, players will be in tune w/ his move sets, just as quickly and efficiently as the CPU player is.

I haven't noticed Sagat being over powered. I did notice Seth is a bit cheese ball but once you figure out his patterns he's not too difficult.

With some timing, the Flailing arm thing is defeatable, though combining the glowing hand slap thing with the spinning attack and his block breaking grabs can make him a tough cookie.

The tiger knee does great at stopping the Spinning attack, btw, goes right through it at close to medium range.

His glowing hand attack passes through fireballs with good timing, and also moves you across the screen rapidly. His spinning arms attack also ignores fireballs, as well as doing a large amount of damage, and being counterable by only a few moves. The fact that it is so easy to do makes it worse. LK+MK+HK or LP+MP+HP can be spammed for near endless spinning, which only very careful timing can break with a low punch or kick attack.

yeah, Dhalsim is deadly w/a yoga fire followed by teleport: you either take the flame hit coming at you or a physical attack when he reappears behind or overhead :-P

I was playing against a friend of mine with Dhalsim and pulled off the coolest combo ever. Blew the ultra combo fireball at him, teleported behind him and instantly did the Super Combo right when the UC fireball made contact.

My friend was like, "Ok, that was impressive." =)

Yeah, Dhalsim is a tricky bird. Well played, almost unbeatable. Cheaply played (constant air fireballs) akuma frustrates me the most.

I use Sagat alot, mostly because he has the best counters against cheap frickin players (Zangief and akuma specifically)

I think the reference to these characters being overpowered was meant more for the versus play than single player campaigns.

As for seth being tough on single player... hell yeah he should be, hes the boss!

So, Capcom, since you admit this, how about a patch for the game to balance the characters?

On the topic of RPG AI, how about the RPG AI that has the enemies seemingly obtaining limitless boost so they can jump line in a turn based combat system, time after time after time....even though it's very early in the fight.

Yes, they're both insane

Though doesn't mean that they're not beatable.
If anything what they should do is buff up some of the weaker characters like Sakura, Rose, and Gen...

Cammy is my best character, and the one I always use when I am ready for some serious online action. It wasn't always like that, though. Back in the day, Guile was my best. Then it was Ken in the Alpha series. And now it's Cammy in SF4.

I wonder if they'll ever release downloadable characters for SF4? I'd love to play as Dee Jay. :)
