Cage On Motion Sensing: "Not The Direction I Want To Go"
The debate concerning motion sensing in video games continues to rage, especially after this year's E3, where both Sony and Microsoft showcased their new technology that will feature more physical involvement on the part of the player.
But Quantic Dream founder David Cage isn't so hot on the idea. His current project, Heavy Rain, may be the start of we at PSXE like to call the "Intellectual Genre," as it could focus on storyline and character development like no other game before it. This is kinda unique in and of itself, but Cage says that gamers are more about relaxing, and the industry will head more in the direction of film. In speaking in a recent interview with Kikizo, Cage had this to say:
"I'm not sure all people want to play jumping and running in front of the television, because I think some people just want to relax and just play, enjoy and experience. It shows Microsoft wants to go the Nintendo way, probably, go casual, compete with Wii Fit, and there's nothing wrong about it - there is a market for casual gamers. But this is definitely not the direction I would like this industry to go, because I think it should go in the direction of movies - more creativity, more new ideas, more authors - rather than going in the direction of toys. And from a technical point of view I must admit I'm still slightly sceptical about what they've shown."
For our part, we believe there's room for both casual and hardcore gaming in the industry, provided all developers don't start gravitating towards one idea. The success of the Nintendo Wii has clearly made Sony and Microsoft adapt, but at the same time, the hardcore gamers aren't likely as enthralled with the motion sensing concept. We are interested to see how Sony's motion tech and Microsoft's Project Natal will fare, but at the same time, we're totally stoked for Heavy Rain...and we have no desire to play it standing up and doing things with our arms.

Sure the Wii has shown some level of 'success' with motion controllers but it's also shown that it eventually gets 'old.' However, i don't know the market size of the 'casual' gamer vs the 'hardcore' gamer market so maybe it is worthwhile to do motion controllers.
In any event, bring on 'Heavy Rain.'

It should only be an extra-feature if the devs feel it goes with the games.
And hopefully/thankfully Sony doesn't force their 1st and 2nd party devs to implement it in all their games, well at least not to the point where it's obvious.
Anyway I so want this game...

Which is not to say that I really want motion-sensing in my games. I don't. But if you say it should always be optional then you really limit what developers can do with it and it will never be more than a gimmick. If you're going to do motion-sensing then you should do it right.
And I don't think anyone is expecting it to be implemented in every game. That would be crazy. What I'm saying is that it makes sense to have games that either require it or don't use it at all.

The Wii has a few gems, Sony's motion controller looks like it could be just as good if not better, but Natal "from a technical point of view" makes me skeptical as well. It looks like Sony's old EyeToy and Milo appears to be a rehash of Nintendogs.

He's spot on. Games need to grow up. There will always be room for toy games, but we also need grown up 'games' as well. The casual/young gamers grow to become mature, adult gamers, and their tastes change. At least Sony appears to get that.

my opinion is that the wii is all about hype. when something new comes out, many people rush in to buy it, but as the market gets saturated with the same concept, it gets old and it just becomes something of the common
we all know the wii is outselling by a large margin in america than anywhere else. compare it to japan for example, wii is just not selling in japan like in america and the nintendo president seems to be behind a desk scratching his head
reasons for this:
1.japanese are not fat, they dont hav any obesity problems
2.japanese doesnt need any extra physical workout, they do so much of it just by daily transportation
3.not many japanese parents thinks about buying a wii for their kids in the same concept the americans do
-americans are horrified if their kids play violent video games or if it has any sexual content, in japan, they dont worry the same way americans do, its a different culture
results:wii doesnt sell at the same level in japan, as it does in america
basically its the american market that really got the wii thing going. and hardcore gamers dislike the wii, or at minimum, wishes the success of the wii doesnt affect the hardcore gamers
i think its better off if companies just use their time and resources with the traditional gaming since nintendo already took most of the casual gaming market. sony and microsoft can try what they can to grab some of the market share but... lets just see how well they do. the company share holders and execs are the ones who usualy look at numbers rather than following common logic (not really.. but u know)

Sadly they aren't that horrified by the violence, but are scared sh%tless by the sex. Although this isn't the article or comment section for that discussion...LOL!

I completely agree with that. I dont play games to jump around and get worked up, I like to lie on my bed and relax..... if something gets difficult i sit cross legged lol.
And dont give me bulls' like i'm lazy, while at times that is partially true, im not that bad.
I realy cant wait for Heavy Rain, Its the reason i paid £99 to get my PS3 fixed.

if you die in a scene can you choose to replay it or not?
because from what ive seen thats it you skip to another character and you dont find out what hapens to that character.
its almost like your missing out on half of the game.
its a great idea BUT you should have a choice.
were all human we make mistakes i want to find out everything, i want to experience everything.
for me to do that if i die i have to replay the game the EXACT way i did up to the point where i died and hope i get it right this time.
thats not fun, thats a pain in the A$$.
and from what david cage has said theres at least 4 different endings so DAM its going to take a hell of a long time to finish them all.

I agree that some games would not work well wit h this, but there are many that would.
Having a few games devoted to the technology would be sweet. Archery, sword fighting, joisting... the whole midevil thing would be a blast.

It would be quite cool to have a decent robin hood game made for which motion sensing could be used. Base it around a similar engine as that that Assassins Creed uses. Give first person weapon usage also.
On a side note I need to add that I live down in the Falkland Islands where video buffer times are REDICULOUSLY slow and we have quite low download limits on an already overpriced internet package so I havn't actually seen the video where motion sensing from Sony was debuted).
I am assuming there are a couple of buttons on the motion sensing controller for which movement could be controlled otherwise movement through a sandbox world may get a bit awkward only using motion sensing.
My 2 cents :)
