Insomniac Content With Remaining Exclusive To Sony

With two of the most critically acclaimed and popular franchises in the PlayStation's stable - Resistance and Ratchet and Clank - Insomniac is a major contributor to Sony's platforms. And it seems they're perfectly happy with that.

Creating a game takes a lot more time and money than it used to, and higher profits are crucial. Hence, it makes far more sense to double or even triple your potential consumer base, which is why so many developers will only produce multiplatform titles. The sales numbers for Resistance 2 were good but not spectacular and when GI spoke to Ryan Schneider, director of marketing and communications for Insomniac, he had this to say in response:

"Sure, as an independent developer, you do consider those options - but at the same time we do have a great relationship with Sony. We’ve been with Sony for a long, long time now, and that’s where we intend to stay for the foreseeable future.

Sony bends over backwards to work with its development teams. Their product development team is second to none - we absolutely love working with them. Their PR and marketing folks are terrific to work with and very dedicated to the cause, and there are some very creative people there. We feel very fortunate to have that sort of relationship in place."

As a frame of reference, Sucker Punch (inFamous, Sly Cooper) said something very similar; they praised Sony's behind-the-scenes ability and said they very much value that business relationship. Insomniac is clearly of the same mind, so if you thought you might see Resistance 3 for the Xbox 360, you should probably think again. This is one developer that probably won't be jumping ship any time soon.

I read sometimes how devs think working with MS is a nightmare. I would hate to be a dev and have to be nice to Aaron Greentoad.

It's not really surprising. Insomniac has 2 major engines for the PS3 (Resistance and R&C) and they spearhead the Nocturnal Initiative, which is basically giving devs access to their source code, as well as other tips/tricks of working with the PS3's architecture. They've got too much time and money invested in the machine to start thinking multiplatform. Beyond that, they're probably making decent gains, given Sony covering their costs upfront.

Insomniac uses the same engine for both its series. Did you not notice how colorful Resistance became after R&C ToD?

Imo, the Ratchet team is much better at using it than the Resistance team, even though both are very talented.
I will buy every Insomniac game, just because they deserve it. Not only are the one of the most talented 3rd party studios, they also help out other 3rd and 1st party devs as much as possible and still release at least one amazing game a year. If every studio was line Insomniac the world would be a better place.

According to the dev commentary in R&C, it's all the same people working on both franchises, rather than distinct teams. I'm sure there's some division at times, though.

Nathan Hale could grow a raccoon tail and gain electric powers as a result of being infected even further by the chimeran virus. (Yes, I did beat R2 and I still think he'll be returning)

That or Cole could find a LAARK sitting around somewhere.

Maybe they'd make more money if they sold mediocre multiplat games, but I'll bet they ain't poor!

Also, I'd like to think that as happy as they are with Sony's development teams, PR, marketing folk etc. they're even happier with the PS3 itself. Insomniac games don't really have an 8 Gig feel to them.

developers like bungie trying to leave microsoft game studios cuz microsoft game studios is too "controlling"

and how many smaller game companies complain about microsoft game studios on the issues on xboxlive marketplace?

*there's a lot actually but i didnt want to name them and make mistakes and get anyone angry, nor do i want to go into major research

Not even that, Sony owns the Resistance IP, but hearing stories about how Sony really look out for their development teams is really great..shows that they care

and you really gotta commend Insomniac, their in it for the long haul, since the PS1...in for a penny, in for a pound.hopefully Sony will keep making relationships like this with great devs so we'll get great games

After seeing Rachet & Clank I wish Gex (PSX) could use the same engine or re-made in the same way. But it's excellent that Sony has great relations with it's first-party companies bringing great games just for us. Can't wait for Resistance 3.

It's an interesting contrast when you read the comments from people like Sucker punch and Insomniac and compare them against the vitriol from folks like Activision and others who just don't seem to get it.

I can't help feeling that it's like any relationship between two people. It's a give and take. Insomniac and Sucker Punch understand and between them and Sony it's a two way street, and as a result they work well together. With Activsion and others, it's all give from a Sony point of view, and nothing in return.

I'm referring to the development phase here since obviously the licenses ensure that there is a financial return to Sony when a PS3 game is sold. It just looks like Insomniac and sucker punch work with Sony - hand in hand, exchanging information and experience. Rather than arrogantly expecting Sony to hand things to them on a plate.

Interesting how developers willingly create exclusives for Sony. While Microsoft buys exclusives right and left... which developers wiggle out of at the earliest possible opportunities.

What I've never understood is why does Microsoft get away with this behavior? It's the very definition of anti-competitive practices that subvert the free market system of the United States. And they're so completely blatant about it, too. It's as if the government just looks the other way. The idea that what Microsoft is doing could be illegal doesn't seem to even come up.

to my memory they have never released a bad game, they seem to have a verry relaxed fun environment to work in.
and ted price seems like a clown to work with, allways joking sorta like my ex boss.

"Exclusive to Sony" vs "360 Exclusive"
There's nothing called 360 exclusive, it should be Microsoft exclusive as most/all of 360 exclusives are available on PC
