Insomniac Content With Remaining Exclusive To Sony
With two of the most critically acclaimed and popular franchises in the PlayStation's stable - Resistance and Ratchet and Clank - Insomniac is a major contributor to Sony's platforms. And it seems they're perfectly happy with that.
Creating a game takes a lot more time and money than it used to, and higher profits are crucial. Hence, it makes far more sense to double or even triple your potential consumer base, which is why so many developers will only produce multiplatform titles. The sales numbers for Resistance 2 were good but not spectacular and when GI spoke to Ryan Schneider, director of marketing and communications for Insomniac, he had this to say in response:
"Sure, as an independent developer, you do consider those options - but at the same time we do have a great relationship with Sony. We’ve been with Sony for a long, long time now, and that’s where we intend to stay for the foreseeable future.
Sony bends over backwards to work with its development teams. Their product development team is second to none - we absolutely love working with them. Their PR and marketing folks are terrific to work with and very dedicated to the cause, and there are some very creative people there. We feel very fortunate to have that sort of relationship in place."
As a frame of reference, Sucker Punch (inFamous, Sly Cooper) said something very similar; they praised Sony's behind-the-scenes ability and said they very much value that business relationship. Insomniac is clearly of the same mind, so if you thought you might see Resistance 3 for the Xbox 360, you should probably think again. This is one developer that probably won't be jumping ship any time soon.

I will buy every Insomniac game, just because they deserve it. Not only are the one of the most talented 3rd party studios, they also help out other 3rd and 1st party devs as much as possible and still release at least one amazing game a year. If every studio was line Insomniac the world would be a better place.

Also, I'd like to think that as happy as they are with Sony's development teams, PR, marketing folk etc. they're even happier with the PS3 itself. Insomniac games don't really have an 8 Gig feel to them.

I can't help feeling that it's like any relationship between two people. It's a give and take. Insomniac and Sucker Punch understand and between them and Sony it's a two way street, and as a result they work well together. With Activsion and others, it's all give from a Sony point of view, and nothing in return.
I'm referring to the development phase here since obviously the licenses ensure that there is a financial return to Sony when a PS3 game is sold. It just looks like Insomniac and sucker punch work with Sony - hand in hand, exchanging information and experience. Rather than arrogantly expecting Sony to hand things to them on a plate.

What I've never understood is why does Microsoft get away with this behavior? It's the very definition of anti-competitive practices that subvert the free market system of the United States. And they're so completely blatant about it, too. It's as if the government just looks the other way. The idea that what Microsoft is doing could be illegal doesn't seem to even come up.
