Rockstar: Don't Expect A GTA Movie Any Time Soon

It seems like every major video game franchise is heading to Hollywood these days, but in regards to one of the biggest, you might not have to worry (which is what we all do when a movie based on our favorite games is announced).

According to what Rockstar boss Dan Houser said to the LA Times, a Grand Theft Auto movie simply wouldn't work. His very clear and straightforward explanation was-

"We don’t believe that the Grand Theft Auto games, which are massive in scope and structurally complex, can be adequately compressed into a two-hour movie."

See, we've said this before and it's great to see that Rockstar has the same mindset. On top of which, they have also thought about what a poor GTA film could do to the franchise's reputation; something more developers and publishers should think about.

"It seems obvious to us that maintaining the long-term integrity of any entertainment property has been dependent on not making substandard spin-off products to people whose primary interest is making a quick buck. If we ever decide to do a film, it will be because we have resolved our creative doubts, and while retaining enough control to ensure that if the movie is terrible, at least we will know we ruined the property ourselves."

Say what you will about either Rockstar or GTA, but gamers should definitely applaud this stance. It definitely hasn't escaped attention that most movies based on games suck, and at least someone has the pride and dignity to stand up and say, "I'm not going to let you do that to my game." Bravo!

It appears Dan Houser knows whats what when it comes to this topic. Max Payne should of been good but movies have to appeal to a bigger audiance than just the fans that actually matter. If they put they're minds to it, Vice City could be a good movie.

Yeah I totally feel you on that one. Vice City or San Andreas could work. San Andreas would be a bit too much like "Boyz N Da Hood," at first though...hahah

Good....no GTA movie. It really wouldn't make sense anyway. This would be another lame attempt at raking in the dollars on name recognition.

Wait wait wait wait wait.....

WHO IN THE HELL woke up one day and said "Hmm...GTA could be a movie..." How in the world can anyone possibly think that. I mean sure almost every single video game coming out now, is going to have it's own film...but seriously - GTA?!??! With all these movies based off of video games failing terribly, you would think they wouldn't even think of that kind of idea...but hey what can you do.

I guess there will never be the day where a movie doesn't have its own video game, and a video game doesn't have its own movie (Final Fantasy excluded).

When the original Grand Theft Auto released Fox sued alleging violation of their copyright for the title "Grand Theft Auto". They owned the rights to a movie by Ron Howard with that title. A settlement was reached and supposedly one of the stipulations of the settlement was that Rockstar North couldn't make a movie based on the game and Fox couldn't make a game based on the movie.

You see, a story like Nico or Tommy's could make a good movie, but without all the crazy open world adventuring the movie just wouldn't FEEL like a GTA. It would be a gangster thing with "GTA" slapped on it.

Since GTA took ideas from old gangster movies to begin with, It would be hard to make an original movie without ripping of other franchises. Not to mention that there is already a Grand Theft Auto movie from the 70's. Produced by the same guy that did the original Gone In 60 seconds I think.

You stole my comment before I even thought of it... amazing!
GTA III = The Godfather
GTA: VC = Scarface
GTA: SA = Boyz n the Hood
GTA IV = I don't know, but I'm sure there's some movie with a similar storyline.

We don't need a GTA movie, we already have them, and they're better for not being based on video games.

Throw a little good fellas and Casino into the first few as well. Rockstar took the idea of the greatest gangster movies of all time and then made them into playable entertainment.
