Criterion Had Planned Skate Or Die 3

This is one of those stories that will make all veteran gamers go, "aw, no way...really?"

If you were a kid in the '80s, you likely remember Skate or Die, which was released by Konami in 1987 for a bunch of computer systems and the NES. It became an extremely popular title and to this day is considered to be a definite classic from the 8-bit era. It was re-released for the Wii Virtual Console in Europe and Australia (sadly, America didn't get it), and now, we learn that Burnout developer Criterion was actually planning to bring the title back in next-gen form. According to VideoGamesBlogger, Criterion was working on "rebooting the series" with Skate or Die 3, but things changed when EA purchased the developer in 2003. Not long after the acquisition, EA canceled the project, likely thinking that Burnout was the wave of the future. Well, they were right about that - the franchise has gone on to big sales and widespread critical acclaim - but wouldn't it have been sweet to see another Skate or Die? I still remember that silly half-pipe...and yes, youngsters, that's what games looked like over 20 years ago.

So who wants to start a petition for Criterion to resurrect that dead project? Think EA will let 'em? What other classic franchises should get a fresh start this generation?

I'll sign that petition! I remember Skate or Die and dropping a new project was a bad idea. Why not greenlight this and burnout?

Why not a re-boot? Well, maybe because EA doesnt see the need for two skate board games. Its kinda pointless at this stage.

Would this game have to compete with EA's own Skate games? I think that would determine whether or not it gets made.

I never played the game but how similar was it to the Tony Hawk games now-a-days? If it was more arcade-like, which it looks like in the image, I'd say it'd sell a lot. I don't want a 'realistic skateboarding' game. I mean hell if I wanted to skateboard realistically I'd learn how to ride and do tricks. I liked the old Tony Hawk games that were more arcade like before now. So I'd definitely buy a game like this, if it's arcadey, over realism.

Man, Skate or Die was the sh*t back in the days. Also Tecmo Bowl, Contra, Double Dribble, Paperboy, Top Gun, and Excite Bike.

Isn't it funny that it took THIS long to get custom made tracks a-la Excitebike back into games, such as Modnation Racers?

Wow. I loved Skate or Die! That game was awesome and I still don't understand why it wasn't released in North America on the VC. A reboot would have been insane. Watch out for that pothole. Ha!

I agree with LegendaryWolfeh...
the old skate games were classic, like Tony Hawks Skateboarding on PS1 and so the 2nd one and the 3rd one...

It would be Skate 3 if EA revived plans on a new Skate or Die since Blackbox don't exist anymore

Ben I still have my Skate Or Die Cassette tape on my C64. Seeing that pic has brought back so many good memories.

I would love it if they did a new one :)

Wow.....I feel so old now. I would sign that petition in blood. Especially being that Criterion was doing it. Maybe they can release skateboarding for Burnout like they did bikes. lol. The Skate or Die expansion.

DUDE!!!! I would love to have a new skate or die game if it was done like the old skate or die. The nostalgia would be great and it really wouldn't be in competition with any of the games out now. Hell make it a XBLA and PSN game for us old farts to enjoy.
