No Big Shock: inFamous Film Inevitable

Did anybody else cringe when they read that headline? These days, just about every gamer is hoping their favorite title never gets butchered on the big screen, but unfortunately, because Hollywood ran out of original ideas a decade ago, just about every big video game is headed to the film world. Sorry.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the best PlayStation 3 exclusives available will soon make the "infamous" jump to movies...yep, it's Sucker Punch's recently released gem, inFamous. It seems that screenwriter Sheldon Turner will be handling the storyline and character development duties, and we're looking at a seven-figure deal, too. If you're not familiar with the game in question (and shame on you if you're not), the protagonist goes by the name of Cole and is - for all intents and purposes - a modern day superhero. His body becomes infused with electricity that he can use as he sees fit, and it's his job to save the city from a spreading terror. He won't be revered by all, even if he makes all the right decisions; playing as Good or Evil is part of the fun in that game. Said Turner:

"What excited me most about the game was it was the first of which I've come across that had a big idea and a character arc. It is, I believe, the future of gaming. The game, while big and fun, is at its core a love ballad to the underachiever, which is what our hero, Cole McGrath, is."

Well, whatever. It's not that we're condemning the movie outright before we even see it, but based on history, we have difficulty getting our hopes up. We'd certainly like to think that a game like inFamous would make for an excellent film, but thus far, no game-turned-movie has really lived up to expectations. ...guess all we can do is hope. The film probably won't be in theaters until some time in 2011.

Hollywood is full of parasites. They raped comics, and now they want to do the same with video games.....but who knows, maybe somewhere down the line video game movies will get their "Dark Knight".

I dont particually like the idea, but i can see it unfortunately. But it'll be styled like one of though comic book adations which are plauging modern cinema. Full of special effects, but bland acting.

Oh great jason statham plays cole and we all shell out 12 bux to see a backwards movie adaptation of a great game... almost as bad as news for the tekken and king of fighters live action flix. BLEGH!

I say screw actors! I'd pay 12 bux to watch a run through of a game rather then watch a movie about it they always change costumes to be more practical or play down super abilities to be more down to earth or they replace certain characters roles for something more "crowd pleasing" its a darn shame I say!

That's the thing. "Would" is one of those words that we use a lot because there is the potential... to make it good or to make it flub. I'll always be hopeful but the realistic person in me still knows that these ideas can materialize into something very, very wrong. Here's to "hope".

Hollywood has obviously run out of ideas. They did it with comics and now games. If they are not remaking something or doing a prequel. Could be a bad idea could be a good. Not many game to movies have been as good as they could be. Resident Evil was probably one of the better ones. I didn't mind them. I thought Hitman was ok too. Cant remember any others though.

I just beat inFamous last night, the game is truly awesome. Loved that ending too (as the good guy, I still gotta go back through as evil) If they followed it precisely and kept the feel it could work. But guess what? When has Hollywood EVER followed the ACTUAL plot of the game? Lemme see, hmm...never.

Don't get me wrong, I think InFamous is a stellar game, I'm just wondering if I'm the only person concerned that there's 4 or 5 video game movies in production right now. And with Hollywood's track record on the subject....could you imagine Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear plot, in the hands of Michael Bay??? *Cries*

Steven spielberg producing inFAMOUS starring Jason Statham as cole- Natalie Portman as trish- Matthew Mcaunihey (never bother to remember the spelling of his name) as zeke- the story begins as cole (jason) is heating a hot pocket in a microwave during his lunch break at a nuclear power plant, suddenly an explosion caused by the tomato sauce leaking from his hot pocket destroys the city... need I say more? They will stray as far from the plot as posible in order to shrink it to an hour and twenty minutes and make it as budget friendly as possible. Anyone feeling me?

You forgot to focus on the brand name of the hot pocket...although I guess if it causes the disaster, it may not be the best example of product placement.

Alright I give up...go right ahead Hollywood...make a movie for every single FUCKING game you see. I'll enjoy watching Gran Turismo one day...

I mean I'm not saying..."OH INFAMOUS WILL MAKE FOR A TERRIBLE MOVIE!!!" - I know that infamous is a great game as many critics have said...and who knows the director of this might not do such a bad job and start a rise for video game based movies...BUT DO THEY SERIOUSLY HAVE TO MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF EVERY GAME THAT COMES OUT?!?! Like really?!

A Gran Turismo movie isn't stupider than that; nothing is stupider than that, except maybe the SIMS movie (most boring movie EVER).

I can't wait to see how they work all 500+ cars into the GT movie.

Hollywood is banking on the fact that even though we've been burned by these movie games we will still see them out of sheer curiosity and the people we played the games in front of will see it and the people who like what they read about the game will see it... you see they are going on the fact that we won't stick to our guns if its good or bad one way or the other we'd see it anyway for various reasons mostly to see if its as bad as we thought.

I also just beat the game a few days ago, as evil tho have to go back to it for the good.
And while I've wanted the 3rd mk for way before the rumours started up again and I'd be interested in a bioshock movie I don't see how even hollywood stooped to this one.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good game and COULD make a good film if it can manage to be more than a desperate attempt at cashing in and especially if they play the evil side of things, but why so damn fast?
The games only been out for like 2 months, which means it was being planned before it even came out.
Personally I'd prefer Mcfarlane to get back in gear and put out spawn 2 already.

The only sure way a movie studio could ruin the "inFamous" movie is if they make the grave mistake in hiring Uwe Boll to direct it(I hope he doesn't challenge me to box him in a match for that comment). I'm sure the guys over at Sucker Punch will make certain that they have a say in the movie production.

I agree with most, this game has a good story that could really make a good movie but they have to keep it really close to the game. No wondering off changing the story to make it less complicated keep some of the sketchy decision making in and don't skimp on the acting. If hollywood could do this it would be a classic but the odds aren't great.

screw the movie i want infamous 2.
just different lvls with better graphics and a few extra powers.
the storyline in infamous is second to none.
especially how it has a few twist and turns that you would never expect.
and a few good one liners.
not ha p***** got wet good but close enough.
