Square-Enix Can't Comment On Star Ocean PS3 "At This Time"

You know, sometimes it's all in how you interpret the wording. These days, "no comment" could be as good as a confirmation, simply because there is no outright denial.

A few days ago, some eagle-eyed gamers spotted a GameFly listing for a PlayStation 3 version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope. As most of you know, this RPG is currently an Xbox 360 exclusive with no confirmed plans to bring it to Sony's machine. We didn't actually think that Square-Enix would respond in any way (Sony certainly wouldn't have), but in fact, ScrawlFX received a reply, and it reads as follows:

"We cannot comment on a PS3 release at this time. The posting on Gamefly.com was an error and had been taken down from their site."

That last bit notwithstanding, PS3 owners and RPG fans should remain hopeful. "We cannot comment on a PS3 release at this time"? As disappointing as that sounds, take it from someone who has heard standard - yet veiled - PR responses many times over...that's a far cry from saying, "we don't have any plans to bring Star Ocean to the PS3." In fact, in some ways, it's almost as good as a confirmation, so says my warped little journalist mind. Perhaps it's only a matter of time...

sad to admit but they've been riding on the coattails of past hits for too long. the glory days of squaresoft are long over. level-5 is the wave of the future i think.

I look at Atlus for my RPG needs. They seem to keep publishing gold. I am just sad that the gold that they publish are rarely the medieval setting fantasy rpg's that FF seemed partial to... But... Demon's Soul is going to ignite some of that back when it comes out. Anyone who hasn't played it yet is in for a BIG surprise. A good on at that! ;)

I don't think Mistwalker was ever with the Sony family in the first place. Hironobu Sakaguchi started the company and was M$ exclusive from day one.

Hmmm...yea I guess that's a pretty good point. Considering Square Enix didn't outright deny and say that "NO we are not bringing Star Ocean 4 to the PS3" but rather say..."We cannot comment..." means that the choice...is still open to them.

Except some big bucks are keeping them away from it for some "time."

Its funny how Capcom says the same thing for Lost Planet 2 except that PS3 and Xbox come out the same time. I still dont understand why. Is that Xbox to PS3 port exclusivity?

But Star Ocean 4 is like Tales of Vesperia, the 1 year exclusivity is not up yet. We probably hear it officially in December 09 and a release on February 10.

I feel that FFXIV will be time-exclusivity for PS3 *crosses fingers hope not*. SE and Sony was never really clear. I pray that they take full advantage of PS3 power and then announce that they cannot port to Xbox ... haha

I think Squre Enix still has its talents, wut went wrong is their focus and business strategy and their priority, that has been hindering those real talents to go full forward to create the classic games they used to; and i believe there are lots of politics inside of the company and that discouraged the talents to truly want to put in efforts and run at full speed cuz they might not agree with where the company is heading but have to compromise anyways. ( as you know some times the true artists do not go along with making profits or fitting the markets - they have their stubborness)

Well it kinda sheds some light on the whole "Creator of Final Fantasy" (Hironobu Sakaguchi) and "Composer of Final Fantasy" (Nobuo Uematsu) moving over to make their own Company called Mistwalker. Hurray for freaking politics. I sense unrest. Tetsuya Nomura is still around though...

ive been hearing rumors that all the Sqaure's xbox rpg games are coming to the ps3.

Microsoft's plan was really good getting more jrpg's on the xbox360. and securing at least timed exclusives. but i still wonder why 360's arent selling better in japan or in asia in general.

there's way more games on the 360 that fits the japanese taste in games. from mistwalker to square enix, and namco games like tales, idol master, ace combat6.

for some odd reason japan (or asia in general), just doesnt want to spend money on the 360. whats up with that?

Because the Japanese people are very very smart, they can see how inferior the 360 is to the PS3 and I'm not talking about hardware Im talking about overall quality. What I cant understand is how MS got to a Japanese company in the first place.... I mean come on, Money??? thats one thing SE doesn't need they made soooo much money from the PS1 and PS2 and heres the kicker, they used some of that money to put the 360 rpgs into production but meh that may just be how I'm comprehending it I could be wrong, oh well c'est la Vie

Also, they're spending their money on, in order, the DS, the PSP, and then the Wii.

When they start buying "next-gen" consoles in earnest, it will be to get FFXIII and the only system with FFXIII in Japan is the PS3.

How long since SO4 was released on the 360? Nearly 6 months....

SO4 was release (in the US at least) on Feb 23rd. August 23rd seems like a good time for Squenix to be able to talk about a possible PS3 version. Perhaps they'll wait until the TGS?

That's exactly what I've been thinking. TGS seems like the best time too really. Anyways, I just hope the extra content is substantial enough to make people buy it again. I would assume SE take no more than a 6 month deal for a game like SO4 that has been traditionally strong on Sony platforms. Any longer and SO4 would have lost its luster with games like FFXIII and such on the horizon. It won't stop me from getting it, but I'm a big Tri-Ace SO nut anyway.

You know what? I think the name suits the game quite nicely,"Last hope". Like I have posted a few days ago, I "might" be done with SO series. because SO1 was good, 2 was GREAT! 3 sucked and now the 4th entry.... I don't know what to say, someone finish that for me. I mean come on, even Ben stop playing it. Surely he must have whipped his bum with it and flushed it by mistake by now.

It's always a matter of time for a great game that seems to be exclusive to the 360 to come to the PS3. Look at the Tales game that was on the 360. It was on the 360...ok. Then it's coming out on the PS3 with improved FULL 1080p graphics, FULL voice acting, and a whole bunch of extras added. Wow, how great is the PS3, lol. It seems to me that the 360 is a beta testing machine. They go to the 360, and then after "Beta-Testing", the PS3 gets the final copy. Lol, it's great, I love PlayStation3. =D
