Rumor: PlayStation 3 Price Cut And New Model Confirmed

The hottest current rumor is that Sony will drop the price of the PlayStation 3 and introduce a new model at the same time. In other words, the PS3 Slim would become the default machine on the market and retail for a lower price than the current 80GB PS3 that sells for $399.

French website JeuxVideo seems to have stumbled across some information that verifies this rumor: they say the price cut will indeed come with a new model, and Sony will make this announcement at the upcoming GamesCom event in Cologne on August 18. An update shows that this new console will retail for 299 Euros, although none of this can be considered "official" just yet. There's no point in asking Sony about it because they'll just respond with the standard, "we don't comment on rumor and speculation," and besides, we only have to wait a few weeks to determine if this rumor is indeed true. The timing would appear to be correct, as the PS3 Slim and the corresponding price drop would probably come about for the holiday rush, and just in time for a few great exclusives in the fall. We can always refer you to the "if there's smoke, there's fire" saying, simply due to the sheer amount of supposed "leaked evidence" out there, but we won't make any assumptions. That's another saying, but one that is frequently accurate.

Anyway, we'll certainly let you know if any more news shows up concerning either the PS3 Slim or a price cut. As far as we're concerned, it's the last major obstacle for Sony's machine. And as a quick update, it seems a listing for the PS3 Slim has just been spotted at Amazon!

Very interesting. I'd buy this slim model but I already enjoy the two that I own. I do hope that if this is true that the distribution and sales increase helps people to understand that this is truly a great computer entertainment system. Seriously, people. This thing offers so much bang for our buck. Why do you think so many people have a PS3 as their central unit in their home entertainment system?

I would also buy the slim model so far I have the MGS model and the original 60GB both of which need new much largers hds. But it all depends on what the slim looks like completely finished if its the same and just smaller that would be great.

Me and my two bros each have a PS3 in my house. Well, I have 2 PS3s. On that doesn't spin discs anymore, which I use for DLs, and the other plays disc based games.

People people people, lol. The ps3 price cut tht has been rumored forever during the holiday rush has been in our eyes this entire time. The The extra $90 you will spend to pick up a PSP Go will be used to subsidize the price cut of the Playstation 3 I think. They could lower the playstaiton 3 by $100 and lose ABOUT the same amount as they are losing it now.

Oh, and for you people who say you wont buy the PSP Go because of the price and will get the PSP 3000, you'll be paying the same amount regardless once you pick up that 16gb Memory stick duo.

The reason people are saying this is because they would prefer a PSP-3000 for these reasons.

1. Price: $169.99
2. 2 x 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo = $60
3. That is $230
4. Why is this important? They would not lose UMD functionality and can get those games for much cheaper than the digital version.
5. This means they are saving money.

Is it really that hard to figure out?

I dont think I would want to carry around two 8gb memory sticks trying to remember which one had that particular game or song or movie i was looking for. i would rather just pick it up and go. As for the UMD, most people dont like it.. Any other Playstation site you go to, including the official us playstation forums, people always complain about it. That's great that its cheaper however.. Oh and no it wasnt that hard to figure out btw. But it is the first time i've heard those five reasons (with the exception of the $169.00 being cheaper). Although, i'm not sure how they will get the games cheaper at the store if they have to pay the packaging costs... but ok.

Well, one wouldn't have to carry both memory sticks. One would be in the PSP and the other would be in the carrying case. That is, if one were to buy a case because they care about the maintenance of their PSP to keep it free from scratches, damage, etc. I put the example of the 2 x 8GB memory sticks because most people aren't in the immediate area to purchase a 16GB Memory Stick for $60 like we are, here in California. So, for the same price of two, one can have a single stick in the PSP and not have to worry about organizing their files. They'd all be there. The 169.99 is the MSRP but most people can find this much cheaper. I got my PSP-3000 for $120 in February on sale.
I understand the complaints about UMD (access times, clunky, etc.) but I still would rather pay for them as they are much, much cheaper. I've seen games for $7.48 and the digital download was $19.99. I'd rather save that money for other game purchases. Sony has commented on a digital download service in the future and I hope that we will be able to play our UMD games in a digital-download format but that's all speculation right now. Packaging does play a factor but look at this other example. When Patapon 2 came out, it was automatically 19.99 for download but stores have had it for as low as 9.99. Still, it's a voucher but I went and bought it at a store vs. the PSN because of that price. Once we go digital only, those deals may be very hard to come by, due to lack of competition.

What store did you come across that had Patapon 2 for $9.99? A quick check at Target, Best Buy and Gamestop each had the game for $19.99. I've seen Twisted Metal Head On on the playstation store start out at $23.99. It's now $15.99.. I wont buy it because I have it on UMD but that's just one of the games where I noticed a price drop. I think the game developers will decide when to drop their prices on the store no Sony. But, I could be wrong..

As for protecting the PSP, the pouch that came with the PSP 3000 is sufficient enough for protection. You would only need a screen protector.

I believe I saw Patapon 2 on sale for 9.99 at TRU and it was also listed in an advertisement for Best Buy (Canada). I saw it go for around $15 during release week at Target and for $16 at Fry's Electronics. I got Twisted Metal Head-On for $10 on sale at TRU, along with a slew of other PSP titles for 50% off. I got a nice hard/leather case for my PSP for around $10 at TRU, as well. There have been lots of sales on PSP equipment and games since the beginning of the year. I'm always on the lookout for deals so that I can get more bang for my buck.

sigh, sadly the launch 60Gb's have quite the YLOD problem. After 2 years and 3 months mine went belly up. And boy did I look like a schmuck after convincing several friends to purchase PS3's over 360's because a PS3 just wont fail... foot in mouth. Oh well, I wont defect, but I refuse to replace it until they drop the price. I can only be gauged for one console per generation. On a brighter note... my once neglected PSP has seen more use lately.

the industry is so concerned on future matters not on today.
honestly 99.99999999% of articles i read every day about games are rumors.
how about we start focusing on what we know and less on pulling things out of the air.

as long as the new PS3 slim has a hard drive at 120GB, i'll update to the new machine... my 40GB HD is really beginning to be a hamper on getting new games and stuff... i'm out of space and need more... but like i said, i'll sell my current one for $150 to get the slim, if it satisfies my needs...

ohh, and i surely hope it can play PS2 games too... please... but my goodness, we(i) need a machine with more to offer at a reasonable price... some of us 40GB guys are ready to move on up...

If PS3 BC is put back it will most likely be without any additional hardware (since that adds cost). In which case it will be software and will work on any PS3 model.

No, I'm afraid you're wrong. Run the page through a translator and follow the links. It's a user created Amazon listing created by someone selling 60GB systems with BC and NOT, repeat NOT, a PS3 slimline model. The backwards compatibility mentioned is specific to the 60GB systems in Europe, and is in no way indicative of BC being included in any slimline system

Quite apart from anything else, if Sony manages to pull off PS2 compatibility on the PS3 without putting some PS2 hardware back in, then it will be available either as a firmware update or PSN downloadable and work with every PS3 out there.

I'll repeat it one more time to be clear. The Amazon listing is NOT a real listing for a Sony PS3 slimline model, it is a user created Amazon listing that erroneously uses the phrase PS3 Slim but is in fact someone selling reconditioned 60GB Euro PS3 models.

Didn't they say they'd change the font of the Playstation 3 lettering from that spider-man style to a new one? That sounds crazy! Plus it STILL looks pretty cool. Don't know about buying a new one though, thats alot of save files I'd have to move...

They didn't say anything about changing the font or logo. That is an assumption people are making based on the logo glimpsed in the 'leaked' pictures reported to be the pS3 slim and it's shipping box.

Yeah, it just doesn't make sense to say that a rumor is confirmed. Does it mean that its a REAL rumor? So if we weren't sure before, now we know its a rumor? If Sony came out and said it was real, than it wouldn't be a rumor anymore....basically it's an oxymoron.

Personally, I think the slim is real...and you can't confirm a rumor.
