Source: A 2009 Launch For GT5 Is "Almost Certain"

Last week, we learned that Amazon.com had given Gran Turismo 5 a December 29, 2009 release date and while it may only be tentative, one source claims a launch this year is "almost certain."

According to GTPlanet, they have it from "an unofficial but extremely reliable source" that GT5 should most definitely release in 2009 and that the Amazon date is "incorrect." They do say that it's likely we'll get the official announcement at the upcoming GamesCom event in Cologne; Sony's press conference is scheduled for August 18. The final teaser statement is, "he's making a list and checking it twice," which implies that this hotly anticipated racer will hit store shelves before Christmas. Perhaps the first or second week of December...? Kazunori Yamauchi got a ton of press by saying Polyphony Digital could release the game "whenever they wanted," and ever since, racing fans everywhere have been pining for the finalized details. If GT5 does indeed make it out for the holiday rush, that makes three PS3 exclusives (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and MAG included) that should really help Sony during the 2009 stretch run. And the more we think about it, the more we believe that GamesCom will be the time for several big announcements.

Remember, with all the PS3 Slim rumors flying around, that's another unveiling that may come along in a few weeks time. But you know what might make for an awesome idea? How's about a PS3 Slim bundled with Gran Turismo 5 as a sweet holiday gift?

Its a different genre, its not a competition among Sony games. i think its a necessity to have GT5 announced near Forza 3. GT5 will steal the spotlight from them.

godsman, it is competition in so far as we only have so much money to spend on games. The more AAA titles released at the same time, the greater the chance one will lose out in launch sales.

I have to agree with Gabriel on this one. Last holiday season was absolutely packed with AAA titles. I was fortunate to get many of them but have still not finished them all.

OT-I've always felt that GT5 would be out for these holidays and see no reason to change that opinion.

Bundled with a slim and a cut it could shift some consoles as well-I do think, howver, that it's been held back waiting for the PS3 install base to be bi enoug for maximum sales of the next GT but to meet their targets I guess they may have felt they waited long enough and this is a good bet for Sony.

2. Play this until my fingers bleed.
3. Very likely irritate the hell out of everyone around me for lack of eating, sleeping and possibly forgetting to go back to work for a week or two... or three.

I've never really been into racing games, but I will most likely still pick this game up when it's cheaper. I always fail at racing games, prologue was too hard for me. >:(

i cant see this or MAG coming till next year.
its august mags going to be a very big game, 256 players thats going to cause allot of bugs and lag.
every single title heavily involved with online MP on the ps3 has been riddled with bugs like socom and fat princess.
so sonys going to want to run public betas for at least 1 month.
they just started the internal closed beta, so that tells me a open beta is at least 1 month away.
so if anything the betas would end early to mid november.
i cant see them ending the betas than releasing the game.
releasing it around MW2 would be suicide.
i think there extremely bloody stupid pushing back these titles to next year, because releasing 4 exclusives in 3 months thats just stupid.
plus there going up against heavy hitters like bioshock 2 mafia 2 max payne 3.
unless they had allot of bugs and problems every game due out this year, would of been better off doing so bar the 2K games, i think they really needed more polish.
if they delayed them for more polish thats fine, but that does not look like the case with heavy rain or GT5.
i mean look at the E3 trailers both of those games look incredible, yes they were verry short and limiting.
but if thats how a unfinished game plays, DAM! i cant wait to see the final product.

I haven't played a racing simulator in a long time, and I don't really have a ton of interest in them. That being said they are insanely popular. I kind of thought Sony was gonna let EA have a shot at selling some games with NFS and then launch after Christmas. The new NFS looks like it could definitely be competition for forza. GT is in another league obviously, and it will sell a lot of systems for Christmas, so it's probably a good move for sony, but bad for EA and Microsoft.

To be honest Booze, while it's not likely that Gran Turismo will beat MW2 in sales out of the gate. The history of the franchise has shown it can move more units than what both consoles did with MW1. GTA3 on PS2 sold over 14 million units. MW1, only 12.6. Granted, the install base on the PS2 is much much bigger. But, GTA-3 is also an 8 year old game, so that would mean that the install base wasn't nearly as massive when GTA3 launched. IE, it's quite possible it's not only a major software seller, but a system seller as well.

Don't count out GT5 and the boys at Polyphony Digital so quickly. Yes, MW2 is going to sell like hotcakes. but, people have been waiting for GT5 and the PS3 Slim for a HELL of allot longer.

@ Ultima - And part of me agrees with you also. Tekken's awesome, but I'm torn between GT5 and Tekken ;)

Lets see a sequal to a game that has hardly changed you just hide point and shoot, and runs at 600p (or whatever the letteris). or a racing game that although the concept is the same it has changed dramaticly, tuning, car selection, adding snow and rain, now NASCAR and WRC, and running at 1080. I know what my choice is.

dart_driver, lets see gran turismo is a sequel to a game that has hardly changed u just drive a car really fast and looks no better thn grid. or a shooter game tht although the concept is the same it has changed dramatically, as in new weapons and perks and killstreak options , adding SNOW and rain, now SAS and ARMY RANGERS, and running at 600p and STILL looks better thn games at 1080. i know what my choice is.

This is one of my most anticipated games, which is weird to me because before I played GT5:prologue I didn't like racing games at all. I even bought the steering wheel for prologue, and wow... the experience quadrupled when driving with the wheel. It's almost like driving a real car. I definitely urge everyone that love this game to pick up the wheel, it enhances the experience so much.

I really hope the full game will be released as soon as possible (as long as it's done of course), can't wait to play it!!

I think that for a lot of people the arrival of the full GT5 game kind of completes the PS3 making it 'official' as it were. So with it's arrival a lot of people may be 'enabled' in their PS3 purchase. A new slim and less expensive PS3 model would help that immensely.

So, let's get this straight, it's now a triple threat. New slip PS3, new slim price and Gran turismo 5 (along with a slew of other stellar AAA exclisive titles)? Throw in the fact that the PS3 is now built from Cells at 45nm which are cooler - enhancing reliability of the system due to less thermal stress - and you have a real life product re-launch...

I'll still be surprised if it's announced in Germany ahead of the TGS, but GamesCon is a big even too, and it's in Europe which has been quite PS3 friendly.

I should probably get started on christmas shopping to ensure I have enough money for this when it releases. It's gonna be tough getting all the games I want by the end of the year, as well as maintaining an anti-scrooge mentality.
