Dear Sony: Just Announce The PS3 Slim, Already
"Where there's smoke there's fire." This isn't always true, especially in the world of online video game journalism, but at this point, there's a wall of smoke and it has to be coming from somewhere.
We've been seeing evidence of the PS3 Slim for months now, and although none of it has been verified and there has been no official word from Sony, just about everyone is convinced that this new machine is inevitable. We've even heard developers and analysts predict its coming so it has gone far beyond some leaked pics of some Malaysian street vendor (or whatever the heck that was). When our boy Jack Tretton took the stage at E3 this year, he quickly made a joke during his introduction; he thanked everyone for coming, considering the fact that the cat was already out of the bag concerning the PSP Go. It's just very difficult to keep something like the PSP Go or PS3 Slim a secret in the land of the Internet, so it's not like we're blaming Sony. And while we're aware that the announcement will very likely come in Cologne at the GamesCom 2009 event in a few weeks time, we'd just rather have the confirmation now. Really, it'll be easier on everyone. We don't have to write any more articles that say, "oh looky, more PS3 Slim info!" and the readers can finally just throw up their hands and go, "FINALLY!"
There comes a point where a rumor starts to lose any real mystery or intrigue, and it just becomes annoying for everyone involved. Again, this isn't anyone's "fault;" it's just the reality of the situation, and we sincerely ask Sony to send out that press release today. Seriously, we wanna see it in our inbox in less than 9 hours. Just do it and we can all move on. Dontcha have some unbelievable software to show off at GamesCom, anyway? Let that steal the limelight; if titles like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, MAG, God of War III, Heavy Rain, and LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo for the PSP aren't capable of doing that, nothing is.

What I want to know is there any reason other than a price drop do people want a slim version? Is it because you want it to be smaller? (People love smaller things now-a-days) Or because the smaller processor will lead to less wattage or something? Or do some people expect they're going to put B/C in slim line which is all sense not be slimming it down at all. Or do you think they'll make a slim without b/c and a new model with b/c and people can choose both? Honestly I don't think I can see Sony going back and re-installing B/C into it's products as they want to move forward, the only way I'd see it happening is via update and then it wouldn't matter what PS3 you had. This was long and on- and off-topic ._.;

From a consumer's standpoint, I don't see the attraction in a slightly smaller unit, but from a manufacturer's standpoint it makes things like storage and shipping much more cost-effective.
Oh, and yes it would mean that the bulkier systems would not be manufactured anymore.
As for price, the price of the PS2 when the slim launched was already within the "mass-market" price range (and selling like, well, the Wii), so it made sense not to reduce the price. If the slim is real, then it is already being manufactured and is responsible for the 70% cut in manufacturing costs which Sony mentioned, so a price cut makes sense.

i can't believe that that thing has been slimmed down three times!! technology is amazing.
hopefully the next version of the psp will actually be psp2. otherwise the psp will become sony's ipod, every time you turn around another redesign :P

As gamers here have mentioned many times before, we know there will be price drops... it has always happened in the past, and we know hardware shrinks too. Why the wall of smoke? Does one really think M$ does not know any of this?
What real competitive is there when all three console manufacturers are following each other so closely?

The only herring in all of this is Nintendo... they may be working on Next Generation Hardware, that when released (2 years from now - possibly), may make life difficult for M$ and Sony... if they are slow off the block.
Nintendo would have seen what M$ and Sony are planning with motion sensing, and they have a good idea of what these consoles can really do thanks to some excellent exclusives. They can see the bar. They may be developing something secretly ready to unleash it in the future. In terms of leaks, I am sure that is one leak that would really infuriate a corporate...
But in the current cycle, I don't these current crop of leaks are that "damaging" either way...
In addition to this, whether we knew or not about an impending price cut, as soon as one of the console manufacturers announce this, the others will follow. These corporates have plan B, plan C and plan D in place... whilst timing may be off, they have already calculated the implications of following suite and dropping the price of their consoles by $100 dollars to match the competition... they already know and have modeled the losses or gains a forced move like this would incur.
It is all part of "game"... only "first mover" advantage here... which I admit can be something positive for the manufacturer in question.

You know I was rethinking this, and I think I rather support the creators of the game by buying the game.
You should gift this game to a close friend of yours or family member :)
But I do TRULY appreciate the offer, sorry for making you go through all that. I'll add you to my friends list regardless

lol, your right.
@ pyrobomber
"Your wrong for blaming Sony for leaked info. The people that work at the manufacturing plants or Sony in general all have camera phones which take pictures. It is the people that release this info."
your right that it is the people, but they work for sony, therefore they represent their respective employer, even if only to a very small degree. so part of the blame does fall on sony
and if the camera phone thing really is an issue, then sony needs stronger rules about it.
that way there won't be any leaked information.
"They don't have to discuss a price or a date they can just say maybe in 3 to 6 months time. Maybe they can release a picture if they have it a say coming very soon. This way the people that like the "fat" model looks better can purchase, and the people who don't like the "fatty" can wait until the slim comes out before Santa arrives! This is what I would do."
if they announce that the slim is coming soon without dropping the price of the "fat" model, then anybody that wanted a ps3 would wait until the slim is released. because if the slim model and the fat model are the same price, which do you think the consumer will opt for?
that would be bad for sony if they just had consoles sitting on the shelves for six months waiting for a newer version of the product to be released. granted the sales would surge at the time of release, but some customers might have gotten tired of waiting and just decided to settle with a 360
side note: i think this is the longest post i have ever done on this site, lol

I don't know if I'm on the right path or not, but you got to admit that it does seem a little strange. When there's PS3 commercials on TV there is no hype on the internet..Now I hardly see any Sony ads, but lots of hype about stuff we're not supposed to know about...Is internet hype Sony's new marketing strategy? Wouldn't surprise me.

But just think about this for a moment. There are millions upon millions of personal Blogs out there, a fair number of them by gamers. Gamers have jobs in stores. Stores get memos and directives all the time telling employees about changes in product line ups and what not, so it's no surprise that information leaks out of retailers. The same is true of assembly plants in the more advanced parts of Asia. People in most of Asia have plenty of access to the Net, not to mention camera phones and video games. So it's no stretch of the imagination to suppose that pictures of a new product might turn up, and it only takes one person being successful one time to make it happen.
Then we come to the matter of advancing technology and a greater level of technical knowledge among some of the media and some of the gaming public. Anyone who follows technology could have been aware more than a year ago that Cell BE would be manufactured at 45nm this year, and that this would be cooler and cheaper. It's not a huge leap of logic to project this from a smaller, cheaper and cooler Cell processor all the way to a less costly, smaller and perhaps even more reliable (cooler) PS3 model.
The Internet is a big information gathering machine, it takes all that information in, and if you look at it right and connect the dots, a picture emerges.
I don't think we can point a finger of blame at Sony, or even the Media. We're simply seeing the modern internet at work.
As for Sony and announcements. I think that they should keep their lips closed tightly until the event of their choosing and then blurt it all out as loudly and positively as they can. All the rumors and speculation focused on a slim model with a price cut (both of which are ultimately inevitable) takes the attention away from other things. Perhaps they have a surprise or two up their sleeves?

but having said that, i do think there is SOMETHING that sony has got under wraps and they don't want to announce just yet. whether or not it is a slim model, a price cut, or both remains to be seen

My feelings are if there's this much clamoring for an official Sony announcement it's because all the various speculative voices on the Internet, etc, just are getting upset because their comments have not been actually 'proven' yet and that can be frustrating after awhile.
I also think the PS3 Slim is eventual just per evolution of hardware but whether sony has an actual design/implementation and marketing plan ready to go at this point is doubtful. Just enjoy your freakin' fat PS3s for now!

I might, MIGHT buy a PS3 Slim when they hit, IF they're cheaper..that is. My original 60GB already crapped out on my once (Sent it to Sony for repair) and with my wife ALWAYS hoggin' the living room TV, I wouldn't mind getting another PS3 for the living room (So I can move the 60GB into my room) IF the price is right.
