French Source: PS3 Slim "A Reality," To Cost 299 Euros

We politely asked Sony to put an end to the circus and just announce the new PS3 Slim. Well, that didn't happen, which means that we must report on the latest news concerning the remodeled machine.

It's becoming clearer by the day. According to a recent report from the Jeux Video Network, the system in question is an inevitability, and one European retailer responded simply, "Yes, the PS3 Slim is a reality; it will soon emerge." The retailer also said the new console would launch with a retail price of 299 Euros, which supports the popular theory that not only will the PS3 Slim hit store shelves this year, it'll also be cheaper than the current model. That video is worth watching even if you can't understand French, if only for the introductory collection of evidence. For our part, we believe Sony will make everything official at GamesCom on August 18 (the day of their press conference), because at this point, the "unofficial confirmations" are starting to be daily occurrences. Now, considering all this, let's see if we've got this straight-

So the PS3 Slim comes right along with the corresponding price cut. It seems very likely we'll get Gran Turismo 5 for the holidays, and we'll be able to add that to PS3 exclusives like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and MAG. Consider the fact that the PSN and PlayStation Home have both made tremendous strides in the past year, and we're starting to wonder...can anyone compete with the PS3 this holiday season?

your right about the exchange rate for euro to dollars and you have the right amount, but i remember seeing an article about a week ago that cited a source as saying that the ps3 slim would sell at 299 in both dollars and euros- sorry i didnt leave a hyperlink but i dont feel like looking for it

anyway this would make sense considering that sony is doing the same thing with the psp go--making it only $250 and 250 euro

How anyone thinks it's cheaper to hire engineers to reconfigure the board, buy new components, have a sub mold a new plastic case, assemble the console and ship to retail is cheaper than simply saying "hey the stock you have is now 100 cheaper" is beyond me. It takes a lot of money to re-engineer products. Sony could just as easily said "it's costing us 70% less to make so let's pass that on to the customer." Making a whole new model after only three years? Seems a little suspect to me.

Seriously, it's no contest. The PS3 is by far the superior machine this generation, but their goal was not just keeping a niche group of educated and sophisticated gamers happy. They are in the money making business as well, and with sales lagging behind their competitors at present, Sony wants to make it more available to the masses. Hence the cheaper PS3 Slim. At the right price, the new PS3 should own!

ehh, i was excited about the PS3 slim but, a US retail value of about $425 is not that cheap... even if it is a 160GB HD... i was expecting to see it around the $300 mark...

ohh well, i've officially decided to pass on the new slim in favor of upgrading my current hard drive to 250GB for $60... b/c would be nice but, my one and only purchased PS2 still works fine to this day...

Just Stop. You're getting pissed off because of a comment making an assumption about a report of a rumor that's unconfirmed.

If the new pS3 slim hits Europe at 299 Euro, I will be very, very surprised if it does not also drop in the US at $299. The USD and Euro have historically been near parity, I don't see that trend changing in the long term, even if right now the Euro is worth more than a USD.

Yes, the HDD is user replaceable, it's supposedly even easier than before.

As for backwards compatibility, unless Sony surprises the world with yet another hardware solution to this, backwards compatibility for PS2 games will be provided through software emulation. Such a software based backwards compatibility solution would work on all PS3s regardless of model - not just the upcoming, new model.

O.K my bad, I was thinking of GBP £199 approx $285 USD and 233 Euros. I bought mine at over £400 GBP and have spent several hundreds of quid on games and peripherals, while I have seen plenty of my friends go for the 360 just because of the price, so most of the people in my friends list are not real life friends, and I don't want to renew my gold subscription for Xbox Live.

I have been playing games since you had to copy the code itself out of micro mart and then hit run to play.

Software is where the long term money is but people need to be able to buy the system first, Joe Bloggs or an everyday parent does not know what the difference is between a 360 and ps3. They will opt for a 360 looking at the big price difference.

Most retailers or the gimps in monkey suits who hassle you when you browse the isle's have always tried to steer me and my friends towards the 360 when you talk to them, probably because they are low wage slaves and that is all they could afford and, as such own.

We are not too far off the half way mark of the systems lifecycle and a sustained price of £199 for the rest of it's life then dropping to the £100 mark when the next gen comes around is a workable strategy.

I would hate for Microsoft to be in the driving seat for gaming consoles, Sony innovate where as Microsoft imitate.

With MS discontinuing their most in demand model the Xbox360 Pro and probably cutting the price of the Elite to $300, the PS3 at a $300 dollar price point will dominate for sure. What I find funny is Sony doesn't even have to catch up to MS, because MS is doing a fine job of squandering their lead on their own.

I don't think Sony has ever been concerned about catching up Microsoft, I think they are focused on their own business plan and profitability. So long as the PS3 project generates profit over it's life, catching or overtaking Microsoft has no relevance.

Incidentally, although MS claims to be profitable with the Xbox (now). if you look at the lifetime investment Microsoft has made on all things Xbox against the profits made by Xbox. You have a sea of red in that even makes the Sony investment in PS3 look modest by comparison.

I agree Sony probably is not to concerned with Microsoft's user install base, but I do believe that the gaming community is. I also agree that MS isn't as profitable as people think when they've already exceeded the amount estimated for their warranty program by a substantial margin. In Game Informer Magazine they stated MS has already spent over a Billion dollars on their out sourced warranty program. It was of course in their loose talk section of the magazine.So I have no idea how accurate this info is or if we will ever know. I'm sure MS will never announce or provide friendly access to the cost of their warranty work or how many consoles they've had returned.

MS Set aside $1.1 billion for the warranty program when they finally admitted the RROD problem existed. They'd spent a decent chunk of change before that time already. However the $1.1 billion was likely insufficient because the RROD continued to be an issue long after it should. There is a new hardware issue with the newer Xbox360s the so called E74 error. It's actually a hardware fault where heat warps the system board and breaks one or more connections to one of the system's chips. Some would say that it's simply a firmware revision to prevent the continued reporting of RROD, by changing the way that the system responds to a hardware fault.

Microsoft has done this before with the so called General Protection Fault (GPF error) in Windows(3.1) which was simply a redefinition of the much hated Unrecoverable Application Error (UAE) in Windows 3.0. They're both the same, but Microsoft convinced many people that they'd fixed the UAE problem in Windows 3.0 by redefining the condition as a GPF in Windows 3.1.

Mysterious how the E74 error was practically unknown a year or two ago when the RROD was at it's peak. E74 sounds like some kind of software malfunction, where as a frozen system with three red LEDs (RROD) is clearly dead. However they are both a hardware failure caused by heat...nice huh?

In short, the $1.1 billion won't be enough...the extended warranty for the RROD now covers the E74 condition as well.

PS3 Slim? Eeeeevery body is trying to lose weight these days. I like my big fat monster, but if anything ever happens to it I suppose a slim would do. If this sucker does come out at $300 USD which I imagine it would, then the xbox better watch out because it's goin down. I base that on the simple fact that everyone and their momma is asking for this price cut, why? Because they effing want one. You watch, PS3 will stop being hated and become a rockstar because everyone who knocked it will realize it has the best exclusives of all time (previously known as "no games")

The ps3 80gb on Amazon france is 355 euros, which is 503 usd. So I wouldn't compare prices in Europe with prices in the US. So I think a 299 price drop in this US could happen.

I don't think they should make a slim model...not yet at any length. This is probably a good business move, as i=I think someone above said, but speaking from personal experience, the PS2 normal was better and quieter than the PS2 slim. I'll stick to the fat PS3 thanks :)

Do we really think it's going to be $299? I'm not saying no, nor am I against it but if the slim does indeed come out at that price point, then surely the PSP and PSP Go will get reductions, as were stated in earlier news. For some reason I've had $339 stuck in my head for the slim revision but we'll have to wait and see. In any case, I'm curious if the pics for the slim are indeed real because if so, I'll buy one and will custom paint it myself due to it having a matte finish.

someone made comment about no b/c in current ps3. the schematics recently patented were for b/c software, which means that they will most likely release a patch to upgrade our machines. PS2 Classics are bound to hit the PSN and we would need our machines to have the ability to process the code. PS2 Classic makes sense because it is more money made by PSN.

Those weren't hardware schematics, they were describing various software methods for achieving emulation. If PS2 compatibility is done via software, it will work on every PS3 model. Adding hardware into the PS3 design at this point to provide BC, as good an idea as it is, is not compatible with a reduced price for consumers.

I know you're all about the games, Ben...You and the whole PSXE staff. I just said that because I saw ppl debating over this "Slim" and then over the price cut and over the sales figures...and even over backwards compatiability...and I think I saw some currency conversion comments...geeesh!

Oh and I find NO merit in ANYONE on this site arguing over PS3 prices if they already have one...NONE! My PS3 is b/c. It looks good. Its worth every penny. Seriously...does it matter to the ppl who already own one?

I just wish we could all just go back to when games came out...we played them...we may have even recommended them...and that was it.

We should be debating over software. Like why certain games got pushed back, or what game this company is working on, or when FF13 is coming out...Just play the games ppl. Let Sony worry about moving the systems.

Thats not a knock on PSXE's reporting. This is good stuff. Its just the type of reactions from this stuff is out-of-place. Its like the PS3 isn't even out yet for some of these ppl.

i almost had a heart attack last night, i was playing haze the stupid thing froze on me 3 times in less than 1 hour each time i reset the system.
the 3rd time i reset my system it turned off and went to a red flashing light,and my heart sunk i dident have the guts to turn it on dreading the worst so i left it hopeing it will go away.
alas i woke up this morning n it still was there, so i sucked it up turned it on and it booted up no problems.
i swear if my ps3 dies the customer support rep is going to go deaf its already broken twice in 1 year i think thats too many as it is. imagine my 360 survived a 2M fall onto my sub but the ps3 cant even play games without breaking, i treat my ps3 like it was worth 10 billion bucks vacuum it out every week and it still breaks on me :(

It's good to introdruce this in europe

currently it's like
xbox360 12 million units
ps3 10.8 million units
the sales went also a bit down because of the rumors of the ps3 slim

I hope they beat the 360 in europe
(Uncharted 2 will be a bomb)

US is a harder thing
I think it's (correct me please if I'm wrong)

xbox 360 around 18 million
Ps3 around 10 million

i would kill to see another haze game.
but this time sony support the developers.
im getting the feeling that sony treats 1st party and seccond party devs like their family.
but 3rd party we dont want to know you, hence the poor 3rd party ports and hence the limited 3rd party exclusives and hence the 3rd party exclusives having bugs galore.
haze and heavenly sword are 2 perfect examples.
both 3rd party exclusives and both riddled with bugs.

hate to be a buzzkill, but honestly, yeah sony has a stellar line-up of exclusive games, but with all the multi-platform games, about 7 out of 10 times, they're gonna be bought on 360. hell, i wouldnt be suprised if the sales of MW2 on 360 not only equal, but pass the sales of all the exclusives mention combined.

Yup, the PS3 Slim is definately coming. I work for BT Games in South Africa and one of our Sony reps already told us in hush-hush about it. We're def getting a price drop here in SA, as the PS3 is currently R5400 (R8.XX for a dollar so you do the math) and the price is dropping to R3700 once the Slim releases. Not too sure about the hard drive size, but a nifty little addition I heard about is 2x HDMI slots, which will allow for two players to have their own screens, right off the bat. Kick ass. I think Im selling my PS3 Fat and buying a SLim as soon as I move to Canada.
