A Price Drop Will Spur The PlayStation 3 Past The Xbox 360

Obviously, we believe that software is always the catalyst for hardware sales; it's the #1 priority and foremost in our minds whenever analyzing the current competitive situation. But we aren't about to present the list of PlayStation 3 exclusives to attempt to prove the PS3 will surpass the Xbox 360; instead, we're going to use it to look at the overall picture.

Exclusives have the power to influence hardware sales, but the PS3's primary drawback has always been its relatively high price. In the past, if they dropped the price, the other pieces of the puzzle didn't quite fall into place. And yet, given the fact that the 360 had a one-year head-start, the PS3 has managed to stay competitive with the 360 in terms of overall sales. This has happened despite a recession, despite a Network that needed several years to catch Live, and despite an initial lack of must-have software. We've had price drops in the past, but this is a unique situation: the exclusives are here (and more are coming), the Network is arguably a better option than Live, and with Blu-Ray becoming more and more of a household name, the path is clear. Considering all this, a price drop is exactly what the PS3 needs; it's the final hurdle, and intelligent consumers will conduct the appropriate compare-and-contrast session. When this happens, the conclusion will alter a bit when one sees the lower price of the PS3, and that's what matters.

At this point, it seems inevitable that the long-awaited price cut will occur when everything has fallen into place for the system in question. We still have our systems for games and the bottom line is, when you can't play so many great titles on anything but the PS3, a true gamer will have no choice but to place a PS3 in their entertainment center.

The article is spot on. I agree, the last hurdle is the price. Also, there is no better advertisement for the PS3 than the 360's technological incompetence.

If the ps3 slim is $200, it will definitely overtake the 360, hands down. If it retails at $300, it will struggle with the 360.There have been rumors of the xbox pro dropping down to $200. I am certain that people would be very satified with that. I can't wait to see what happens! PS3 FTW lol

That's because MS is no longer going to carry the pro model. Their going to keep the arcade model for $200 and drop the Elite from $400 to $300. So you could get the PS3 at $300 or buy an Elite at $300. Which would you buy?

You can get a an elite for $400 now and a ps3 for $400 now, but yet people pick the 360; regradless, the ps3 having a better over-rall package. If the ps3 came to $200, then the ps3 will dominate. Even the Wii will have trouble keeping up. Can't wait to see what happens.

I do agree the PS3 would sell like hot cakes at $200 a pop, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon. I think people pick the Pro which is currently their most popular model, because it's $300 price tag compared to the PS3's $400 price tag. With the Arcade($200), Elite($300), and PS3($300) it's quite clear who's going to come out on top. MS is just shooting themselves in the foot.

The majority of 360s sold are not Elite, they are Pro and mostly Arcade. The point that the Elite and PS3 share a price is fine, except the majority of Xbox360s sold are not Elite systems. You can hardly use the sales of 360 Arcade or 360 Pro systems as an argument that the 360 Elite sells better than the PS3, can you? You can't, but that's what you did. Sorry, that's a false argument.

I gave you a thumbs up, simply because you have a point. Unless something serious happens in the economy, Sony must deliver a price drop, in order to stay competitive. Understand, to even say that pisses me off, because I know the PS3 is being sold at a loss. But, the truth is, the PS3's been steadily declining in sales, and I've got my fingers crossed that on Tuesday, we're going to see a whole new Sony, and a whole new PS3 strategy.

I think, as Ben points out, and something I've stated quite often...the fact that PS3 exclusives, are truly exclusive to the PS3, will drive most people to impulse buy a PS3, once the price gets low enough, and in that regard, I think Ben's correct, the PS3 will zoom past the 360 soon enough.

I do, however, think it's a load of bullshit that people are waiting so effin long to buy in. The system is, and always has been priced at a steal. Just suck it up, mow a few extra lawns, save some extra dollars monthly and buy one. Eeesh.

On a side note, I'm hearing MS is eliminating their lower end model and replacing it with their high-end. I really don't think this matters much in the long run, as it's simply a price cut on their overly expensive HDD's anyway...isn't it? I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound very compelling to me.

of course... ive known, as well as many others, this all along.
theres obviously pretty high demand for the system. Some evidence would be the fact that people constantly complain about the high price.
of course i know that a lot of thes complaints come from die hard 360 fans, but there are many legit complaints about their not being able to afford the system, people that i know with a 360 are holding out on buying till the price drops.
surely people will still try to complain about something, but its fine

3 (more) reasons why Ben is right (though he didn't mention them):

People who already own 360s are unwilling to pay a lot to play PS3 exclusives, but more will add a PS3 at $299 (given how many great exclusives there now are).

For people who don't own a "next-gen" system, $299 places the PS3 within the same price range as the other consoles (even if they remain cheaper). Current ads frequently display the $499 PS3 next to the $249 Wii and $199 or $299 360, rather than the more comparable pairings (Sony needs to kill the high-end SKU).

Final Fantasy will drive sales in Japan, which have been mostly sluggish.

If the price is $349, the first two don't apply. FF might be enough anyway.

like i said, as long as Sony still makes money, then price cut is fine; but if they cut the price just for the heck of pressure from the consumer or market side, then they will lose money, and if sony loses money, then everybody loses, cuz we are not gonna get any advancement in gaming industry by then. so think long term always.

p.s. It is just lame to always compare 360 and PS3 sales in the way it did: ok, unit wise, 360 might be ahead for now, but dont forget PS3 is more expensive, so total revenue wise, you dont even know which one generated more. and PS3 will go ahead pretty soon, so far ahead to the point nothing will ever catch up when GOW3, FF13, v13, The Last Guardian, WKC, Demon's souls, GT5, MGS5, Uncharted 2, Bayonetta, AC2 etc are all released.

I suspect the PS3 should vault over the Xbox360 by March 2010 at the earliest, realistically around Autumn next year.

Lest not forget Microsoft will match what ever price Sony puts out, and who knows what they have up their sleeves in the months ahead.

You're being delusional.. with over an 8 million unit lead they would have to outsell the 360 by tens of thousands a week every week in order to do that. They don't even sell 100k/wk right now and it's not likely that a 300 dollar price cut will help in the long term. Microsoft sells tons more software as well and they have the most stable hardware numbers right now.

Even without the price cut it will pass the 360 at the current rate of sales. But the price cut will help people who are new to gaming to choose the PS3 rather than the 360 as the large difference in price currently sways them toward the MS machine.

I own my PS3 so I don't care if the price drops again. In fact it may end up being worse if it does drop further. The cheep azz'd wii and xbot moms will be able to afford it for their spoiled, screaming brats, aka:LIVE subscribers -which I sadly am one of for a few more months.

Maybe even raise the price a bit.

It doesn't change my experience that cheaper items like xboxes and wiis sell more than the PS3.

I personally don't care about a price drop since I've had my 60gb ps3 since launch but I would like to see some of my friends finally getting one. I also don't care if a price drop will carry the ps3 over the 360 because we all knew that would eventually happen.

In all seriousness, I'm a little skeptical of the PS brand overcoming Halo. Every single one of my friends bought their boxes for Halo, and every time we talk about consoles they bring up the fact that PS doesn't have the Master Chief.

Sadly, given the choice between the upcoming exclusives and Halo (and $50 yearly for Live), my friends (and a LOT of people) will choose the latter. Seems a little backwards to me.

oh boy..looks like this website has kind of taken a turn somewhere. Used to be if they posted an article like this, you'd have a ton of flame hate from the Xbox side. Now? Nothing in the comments but Sony love. As nice as it is to see that everyone is getting along now...Does anyone else kind of find the comments kind of boring now?

An article like this used to generate over 100 comments easily with all the arguing going on. I might be proven wrong still but I have a feeling it's not even going to come close now.

I don't know how to feel about this, part of me is glad that all the flaming is going away, the other part is going to miss the bantering and arguing...I'm torn....

That being said, Even though I spent more money on it, I've always felt that the PS3 was the better machine, and I have more then got my money's worth out of it. Anyone who gets one after the price drop is getting an amazing deal on a really great machine.

Yeah, I shouldn't be, I always got annoyed with the comments that were nothing but pure flaming, but there were a few that actually researched some information before opening their mouth(fingers?). It kind of made some of the comments section a little more interesting. I guess for me I just felt that with no one really arguing for the "other side" anymore, things just seem a little tame.

Don't get me wrong, the pure flame haters can stay gone, but we did have a couple posters that would argue for the other systems and be able to debate properly. Maybe this is just a sign that all the arguments have dried up and the opposition now has nothing they can say. Who knows?

Price cut for PS3 will be good. My friend said he wants one now since he saw that I paid a hell of alot less to upgrade my PS3 HDD than what he paid to get more Memory for his 360 he was really jealous since I have double the HDD than he does :)

360's a last gen console. Always was, always will be.

Even if it doesn't surpass the 360 in the US. The ps3 will FOR SURE pass the 360 in Europe. And we know the ps3 is way ahead in Japan.

So with that in mind, it should all be clear that the US would be the only jackasses without a real next-gen console.

As anti-Microsoft as I am, I have to say that's just nonsense. Certain features of the 360 at launch were "last-gen", but many of those have been upgraded. The basic design is broken, but in terms of specs, it's not that different from the PS3.

The Wii, on the other hand, is very "last-gen".

They're all last gen consoles, why is this such a big deal? 360 uses a 3-core processor...in a time when Quads are quite popular. And a GPU based off of pre-dx10 technology (DX10 being an MS thing...youd think they would've put more into that). Same with the PS3's GPU, although, the Cell and XDR RAM are well, for lack of a better word, still not matched in performance, for what they do.

The Cell chip can still encode HD data faster than an Intel i7, and XDR RAM is roughly 3ghz faster than anything available on the market (Rambus hits 3.2-6.4ghz bandwidths now).

Any price drop on the PS3 is an absolute gift to consumers. I don't know why you feel the need to say that this will somehow put it "past the xbox360" as if Sony has something to prove to people. Put it past in what way? Sales numbers? What happens when the price drops and sales jump? Will there be some party where we all get together and gloat over PS3 sales numbers? No. PS3 is already past the 360 in quality of hardware and quality of games. And that's all that matters.

and now AMD have their new CPU comming out soon, its suppose to be faster than the intel I7 920 and 60 bucks cheaper.
dam i should of waited and got that instead of the I7, if i did i could of got a extra video card.
and frustratingly for some reason the GPU i bought 6 months ago has gone up in price.
go figure, i thought prices were suppose to drop over time not increase.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, not many games are really utilizing 4-cored processors properly yet (Cell aside). A handful at best. Having the highest end CPU isn't going to really help you much in the grand scheme of things. Only give you a few extra frames, really, esp. if the rest of the hardware isn't up to snuff, as it'll cause data bottlenecks somewhere in your systems architecture.
