PS3 Slim: Unmasked In Full, Details And Videos Included!
As you already know, the PS3 Slim was revealed earlier today at the GamesCom event in Cologne, Germany, and the gaming world is all kinds of excited. We brought you the first details from Kaz Hirai on stage but now, we finally have the official documents from Sony, plus videos of the actual Hirai reveal at GamesCom and SCEA president Jack Tretton.
Yes, you know the stats: 120GB hard drive, 32% smaller, 36% lighter, 34% more efficient, a dazzling new $299 price tag and a launch date of September 1. Additional details we've received from Sony's press release says Japan will get this nifty new console on September 3 for the price of 29,980 yen. Also, we knew the current 80GB PS3 would have to experience a price drop as well, and that has also happened: as of today, August 18, the price of that system will be down to $299 in North America and 299 Euros in Europe. The 160GB machine gets an equivalent $100 price drop - down to $399 - which means that this significant price slashing is effective the whole way 'round; it doesn't matter which PS3 model you go shopping for.
The Slim has been "completely redesigned;" the reduction in power consumption will result in a quieter machine, and the "textured surface finish" adds to the appeal, and we shouldn't forget that it has inherited the "sleek curved body design of the original model." It features a new "PS3" logo, too. As for new stuff, this new console will come equipped with the Bravia Sync feature: if you connect the PS3 Slim to a Bravia TV with an HDMI cable, you'll be able to "directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote." How cool is that? Furthermore, due to the slimming down of the machine, we'll be able to stand it vertically if we so choose; there will be a Vertical Stand for this system, that you will be able to purchase for $24. The only possible downside? They have removed the "Install Other OS" feature, so users will not be able to install other Operating Systems on the PS3 Slim.
Now, because we seriously doubt you were in Cologne today, and because there didn't seem to be any live video feed from the conference (we sure as hell couldn't find one), here's the official announcement from Kaz Hirai:
When you're done watching, check out SCEA president Jack Tretton, who takes time to talk about the PS3 Slim as well:

I'm not going to buy the new PS3 slim until my PS3 breaks and cannot be fixed, or I get it for Christmas? (Highly unlikely to get this for Christmas because I already own 2 PS3s)
I'd rather stick with my shiny PS3 instead of that dull PS3 :)
Unless the new PS3 Slim has some kind of OMGWTF new feature, I wont be getting it.
I still own the original fat PSP, still own the original PS1, and I used to own a slim PS2, but it sadly broke when trying to play GTA.
Luckily, I have BC in my 80GB PS3! :)

I like it. He hasn't been looking like "Prince" these last few years since he became relevant again but rather, some 70s pimp lol, now, he seems "Prince" again as evident with the pic and most definitely the latest album.

On the slim... Damn that looks sleek. Anyway I don't see myself buying on in the forseeable future but I am sure going to be jealous of my friends who have been waiting on the price cut to get a PS3. Pretty sick.

The Slim came out in the 3rd year of it's 10 year lifetime. It's possible to have a "PS3 mini" in it's 7th year, 2013 (You heard it from me first!).
But I am still really excited over this. Go Sony! I hope that the Slim will bring more install base to PS3, so more 3rd party developers bring exclusives back to PS family.

I think I need to be paid Pachter's money this quarter.
I note that the PSPGo! price is now effectively $210 thanks to the bundling of GT PSP with it. Isn't that a price drop in effect?
Oh, I heard a collective gasp a short while ago from the general direction of Washington State.

If a second post appears, I'll delete it; the comment system's been giving me trouble today. It must be the heavy traffic.

Whenever mine breaks I'll get a slim but I'd sure miss my sleek 80g w/bc, hopefully that's so far down the road that another price cut will have already happened by then.
Oh and I'd be ticked off about losing the option for linux... if I had ever seen a point to it in the first place.

I bought the 80Gb for 399$. Should I ask for 100$ back from the store, return it for the 160Gb or return it and pre-order the slim?
