NPD: PS3 Price Cut Could Yield A 40-60% Sales Spike
Everyone has been buzzing about the new PS3 Slim but analysts and other industry professionals are more interested in that crucial price drop. And of course, Sony expects big dividends, too.
According to IndustryGamers, SCEA's Eric Lempel said Sony is anticipating a "nice uptick" in PS3 sales due to that new and very attractive $299 price tag. Furthermore, NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier echoed that optimism by saying "the next segment of price-conscious consumers" will suddenly give the PS3 Slim some attention. When you shave a hundred bucks off the price of your product and redesign the system, you should be able to expect significant returns, correct? Said Frazier:
"The $299 price point is important to getting to a point where the next segment of price-conscious consumers can jump into the market and it most certainly will re-energize sales of the platform. We would expect to see in the range of a 40% to 60% unit sales increase when September sales are reported."
Recently, the PS3 has averaged only 143,000 units per month, due to a slow software period in the summer and a general lack of interest. But if sales were to rise as Frazier predicts, that means we could see a jump to around 225,000 units in September. Not long after the price cut announcement, analyst Michael Pachter said the mark of success will rely on the 200,000 mark; if Sony can hit that and maintain it, they've definitely succeeded. Obviously, we still need the software, and it's good to see that Frazier acknowledges that as well: "Content is still the key motivator of a hardware purchase decision," she notes, and that much we can't ignore. But if you combine the price cut with what's on tap in the fourth quarter in terms of hot software...well, all good things, really.

As far as I know they already die shrank the RSX at least once. It's at least down to the 65nm process.
There were reports in late 2007 that the new Sony/Toshiba joint venture which had Toshiba basically buy a Sony manufacturing plant, would involve 45nm production of Cell and RSX chips that Sony was already making (at 65nm). So it's possible that RSX is at 45nm already, but I haven't ready anything that says it is, and I can't ind anything that reports/confirms it either.
So my guess is that the PS3 slim will (for now) feature the 45nm CellBE and 65nm RSX. At some point int the future expect a revision of the internals to include a 45nm RSX which will reduce power consumption and head output yet again...but not for a year or two I suspect.

Too much hard work, and I have a day job and family to consume my time. I'm lucky enough to have time to read and comment, but there's lot more work involved in running a site than that.
I enjoy taking part in the comments sections and forums because I get to throw ideas and opinions around with everyone else. Plus no one is afraid to tell me when I'm wrong - which I like. When you run a site you don't always have the freedom to participate in the same way, and you become the target for people who want to gripe about the site and/or content, or prove you wrong - just to prove you wrong.
I thank you for your sentiment though.

I gotta say the redesign of the PS3 Slim is pretty disappointing though, I don't know what Sony were thinking with that dark grey matte finish. You're not selling it to the coal mining industry guys...

They kept the same over all form factor and curved shape, they took 25% of the weight nd about a third of the volume away from the system and shrank it. What did you want, a rectangular box with squared off edges? Then it would have looked just like the original PS2.
The glossy piano black finish of the original took criticism for at least the first 12 months because it was supposedly a magnet for finger prints. So apparently the change to a matte finish was at the request of consumers.

and with Demon's Souls, AC2, Uncharted 2, WKC, GOW3, FF13, v13, The Last Guardian, GT5, Resonnance of Fate, Dante's Inferno, Bayonneta etc games in place in the next year or so, plus the 299 Slim w/120G, every single gamer this gen should flock to pick up the PS3 powerhorse

Think about earlier this year when the PS3 got Infamous and Killzone 2. With all the talk going around about those games and positive press they received, the $400 price barrier really makes it appear as though the PS3 is really the most superior console. Also, when I think about the initial $600 price tag, it told average consumers (who don't research) that the PS3 was a superior machine. Furthermore, the Ps3 continues to take what once were 360 exclusives like Ninja Gaiden 2 and Tales of Vesperia, adding tons of additional content. This I think compounds the "PS3 is superior" thinking in gamers and consumers.
Overall, I think it was well played. And to have a price drop when you have Game Informer doing surveys of 360 failure rates really is excellent timing, and honestly I think it may be no coincidence. Even without Japan or Europe in the equation, it looks like PS3 is on track to surpass 360 much sooner than anticipated.

That having been said, the folks here are somewhat diverse. They're not just PS3 owners, some have 360's (and they'll fully admit it...even Ben), some have Wii's, some have PC's. And yes, from time to time, a conversation will spark regarding other platforms...but it's hardly the focus of this site.
The difference is, you don't see me creating an account on an Xbox oriented site, and trolling their forums for lack of information regarding other systems. If you're looking for 'general' gaming, I'd suggest going to the software developers forums, or some other site that caters to gaming in general. But you're hardly going to find what you're looking for here, if it's anything other than Playstation related news.

From a tech point of view, the PS3 has more to offer a programming or tech geek.
There, is that better? Or do you want me to go into more depth and explain why programmers should be more interested in the PS3 from a programming/technology point of view? I could do the same thing from a technologists point of view, I could give you the true gamers version, or I could do the business ethics analysis that has Microsoft basically being a Monopolistic bully that's been found guilty before, and hasn't yet changed it's ways.
Or would all that still qualify as fanboyism?

People may be disappointed about no BC, and people may be disappointed about no OS install option. But, the vast majority will be thinking about Resistance 1+2, Motorstorm, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Gran Turismo Prologue, and all the other exclusives they've missed thus far. Not to mention all of the PSN Downloads that are also exclusive.
And this doesn't even begin to cover those who'll buy in when Uncharted 2, GT5, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, etc... are launched in the coming months. By all rights, we should see sustained sales in excess of 100% what they were doing (going by last months #'s), for the next 12 months...given the titles that will be releasing in that time frame.
Good news for Sony....good news for Gamers as a whole. I really hope they can keep the momentum going for the foreseeable future. It appears that the Xbox price cut, has been shrugged off by Sony's recent news, and may in fact have been countered by the Failure Rate survey....I've seen more news on that Survey than the 360's price cut, thus far.

We all have our reasons here in regards to our PS3 preference, but it's never without solid reason. For instance, I refused to pay for Live, and I also believe the PS3 has the most potential so I'd like to see it succeed as I think it would be best for gaming. Beyond that, there are no Sony fanboy roots here. We're just gamers here and we should not have to ask for anyone's forgiveness for our preference.

Am I right to assume that you are pro-360? Anyways, you'll have to understand this fansite is dedicated to the Playstation fans, that doesn't mean guys like you can't join us.
Yes, there are some comments that shoot down the 360 and the like but please don't try to make it sound like this is some PS3 fanboy nest.
You also expect people to talk about how the 360 is better than the PS3. That's like going to a local basketball tournament and finding a supporter for the challenging group. Point is 95% - 99% of the community here are pro-PS3, if you want 360 supporters there are many pro-360 sites out there where I can guarantee have some negative thoughts about the PS3. But I can assure you most of the members here are mature and can take constructive criticism and give good credit where it's due.
Welcome to the psxextreme site.

So, out of all my friends, only 2 people have PS3's and 12 people have 360's. In that situation, I was forced to get a 360 and Halo 3 in order to play with them. It really does suck playing PS3 alone.
And it didn't help that a friend of mine bought 360's for peoples birthdays this year in an attempt to convert the masses to Microsoft. Sadly, I pitched in towards it, moatly cos there was a $300 price difference between 360 Pro and PS3 80GB. In terms of affordability, there was no other option. PS3 was sacrificed to make way for 360 because of that $300 price difference.
Hopefully this new price drop might turn the tables a bit. Here's hoping that some of my friends will be more interested in Uncharted 2 and MAG and be pursuaded to go PS3 over 360. It's a long road ahead, but I will try and be patient with them.
As long as Sony continue bringing out great game after great game, my friends might migrate to PS3. As for my 3 Halo loving friends, that is another sad story...

Oops......ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR IT BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURNSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Just some joke here but hey, my soul really was burned by the price cut.
MS can cut the price of the 360 to even the score but it's no use anymore because there's no need for the PS3 to be at the same price with the 360, it just need to be affordable.
