Square-Enix On FFVII Remake: "Maybe Some News At A Later Time"

Oh...NO. It's almost too much for my poor ol' heart to take...but the rumor Final Fantasy VII fans can barely even acknowledge without bursting into tears has returned.

Perhaps that's a touch melodramatic but considering it's quite possibly the single biggest and longest-running rumor in the history of video games (next to the now-defunct Duke Nukem Forever), it's not that over-the-top. The concept of a FFVII remake has been around for years but each and every time we think we're days away from an announcement, Square-Enix rips out our hearts again. It's almost too difficult to bear. But maybe the days of misery will yield the brightest day of all... According to VideoGamer.com, Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase addressed the idea of a remake and said:

"As for a VII remake, all I can advise right now is to play the PSN release that just came out for the time being. Maybe, perhaps we'll have some news for you at a later time."

He didn't just say that, did he? Did he?! Kitase will continue to see FFXIII through to the end of its production, and he's also working on Final Fantasy Agito XIII but beyond that, he said he "doesn't know exactly what new projects" he'll be handling in the future. But that is by far the most leading statement offered by any Square-Enix representative on the rumor of a FFVII remake, and it's bound to cause a stir. Back in April, Kitase made another comment that, while not as promising as this one, was still encouraging. And when you combine the two statements...

Oh, God help us.

If they do remake it, they better keep it exclusive to the family of consoles which has brought SE success.

Yes i think so too.

Tbh though, i want a FF6 remake! Absolutely brilliant that was and thats still in 2d, should be that.

However, i don't know what to think about a remake of FF7...

Its touchy. Any wrong move could spell disaster. I don't want Advant Children style OTT cutscenes etc and i think they would get rid of the free roam world map too...

Im just not too keen on this. I think they would change too much.

Hmm...

I almost don't want this remade unless it is exclusive. I want a remake done right using all the PS3's capabilities. If this gets remade as a mulitplat and held back due to the short comings of the 360. I'd be angry and consider this the ultimate betrayal by Square. I don't want one of my favorite games to be remade into another mediocre multiplat.

That said though, I thought Sony owned some rights or steak in FFVII? If they do, couldnt they stop this from going multiplat?

IF a remake is made...IF mind you...If they remake FFVII, then rather than 'remake', I think they need to trash the old script, and keep characters and outline of the FFVII story. It's a good story, but you can't keep the same script and just remake it.

I don't mean re-imagine the game completely and make it all grown up and gritty realism and violence. This isn't Battlestar Galactica. But then again neither is it a kiddies game. It'd be a hard balance to strike. re-imagining FFVII in such a way that it's more modern and current without losing the charm and whimsy of the JRPG original, and yet at the same time capturing the melodrama and drama of the original with all the monumental events that occur. Treating it too lightly would trivialize some of the events and would feel wrong.

I don't honestly see how this can be done without offending a decent sized section of the fans of the original game.

All that said, I would love to see a remake, especially if it keeps the main characters, plot points an story, but updates the scritp and mood a little. It could be utterly awesome - if done right.

I agrizzle, I mean I agree. But in the right hands it would be a breeze to keep the jrpg charm and still update the script. They could even add to the game in the form of previously unresolved plot points. Hire the Advent actors... it would be awesome.

but if they trash the script it'll just be a final fantasy sequel. i mean a sequel for this sounds good too but I'd prefer it to be the same game but visually upgraded, maybe minor fixes in the dialogue too.

No, if they throw away the script and write new dialog for the same story and characters it's a remake. just as Battlestar Galactica is a remake, and not a sequel.

I read from another source that "Both Toriyama-san and Kitase-san were involved in the development of the game, however, and it holds a special place in their hearts. They do talk about it on a personal level, like, "If we did it it would be like this or like that"."

If they're serious about it, they NEED to keep it exclusive to the playstation 3. Not only would this save them a lot of time and money from making an xbox 360 version as well. But doing so would make fans "re-experience the classic on a PLAYSTATION console". Porting the remake would seriously crush that nostalgic experience.

The original game certainly made its identity as a playstation game. So why not do it again on the playstation 3?

I wish square would see the importance of exclusivity.

hey, I actually have a question for everyone -- should Cait Sith be in a remake? Everyone has very different, very strong views about what a remake/reimagining/whatever should include. But I for one pretended Cait Sith wasn't in the original, and 12 years after the fact I hate that thing more than ever. Worst FF character ever, as far as I'm concerned.

But am I alone in this thinking? Would this just not be FF VII anymore if a giant stuffed animal controlled by some dude remotely via magic (or something)was not included? Really curious about people's Cait Sith thoughts.

Maybe this wouldn't go the way movies do (I know you are a movie fan) where a remake is always a flop. (God what were they thinking, Last House on the Left was like PG13 compared to the original.)

remaking this game wouldnt change much from the original. Its just the aesthetics thats going to change drastically but every thing else should be the same. I am curious, if a remake does happen, which battle system would square enix use. I guess thats basically the one thing they can change. would they use the original battle system just updated, final fantasy x battle system where you can change characters anytime (dont remember how FFVII was, its been a loooong time), or final fantasy XII battle system, or maybe the FFXIII system. That should be interesting.

To be fair, I think Zet has just played a lot of today's games which would have Fallout and Alpha Protocol be named RPGs. So it's hard to expect FFVII to hold up to those standards. However, you shouldn't hold a 10-12 year old PS1 RPG and compare it to anything today, assuming you did that.

Guys I know some of you are partial to the older games as am I. But the simple fact is not all gamers come from that awesome PS1 era where RPGs were abundant as tap water. Besides, he did say he believes a remake would be better suited for him, and that I agree with. That's why SE needs to do it, we have some 20 something year old cats (like most of us) who would buy the game in a heartbeat. On the other hand, there's still plenty of younger gamers who have not really experienced FFVII.

Give Zet a break fellas, it's his opinion and FFVII is over a decade old.

For the record it has been 6 days since in protest of a lack of an FFVII remake I made Tifa my avatar.

Right now i wish square enix would tank. That way they could finally be forced to release the games that we know will save them like a final fantasy VII remake.

If people rave for a game to be remade. That means that the game is good enough for it not to need one.

Nice point. I'm replaying it on my PSP right now, it's good enough for me as is, a remake is not needed, but I would enjoy it - I think.

If they make one then yeah I'll at least try it out. But I'd still rather see FFVI get redone.

Have to admit an older sprite based game getting the next gen touch would be mighty pleasing to the eyes, plus 6 IMO has the most complex story with a ton of interesting characters.

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
duke nukem forever is not defunct.
it will come out soon, once the cort proceedings are complete who ever wins will finish it and release it, or just release what has been completed.
3d realms would be stupid to chuck it away, they should sell it to another company to complete it if they cant do so themselves.
if 2K get it than they will definitely get some one to finish it off.
theres no way there letting this time bomb go stale.
50 bucks says this is the "exciting" unannounced title GRIN were working on.
but whats that i hear? SE is gearing up to announce ANOTHER! game.
jesus christ at this rate there going to have 30 announced titles before FFXIII is out.

Hey Everyone, slightly off subject... but FF8 Remake with out the "dick on chick" junction system... that junction system was just WRONG... but the story was well written.. and had a logical feel to it... if they remade ff8 but with a new system.. or even just a level up system like the older games.. it would be so much better....

on another note... FF12 sucked ass... ff10 was pretty good... and if FF7 gets remade itd jus waste the work they put into the original... also... XBOX 360 FTW xD
