Best Buy Deal To Prevent Old PS3 Exchanges For PS3 Slim

If you recently bought a PS3, you're likely a little annoyed at the announcement of the PS3 Slim and the corresponding $100 price drop. Not surprisingly, retailers are expecting a trade-in and exchange blitz when the Slim comes around in only a few days, but Best Buy wants to fend it off.

Thanks to a leaked note to Best Buy employees (pictured here) and in a story potentially verified by Kotaku, it seems this retailer is offering the consumer incentive to keep his or her old PS3. You can see the deal in question in that letter: basically, if someone shows up wanting to exchange their recently purchased fat PS3 for the PS3 Slim, they will be offered a free game instead of buying the Slim. Basically, what will happen is they'll take in the system, re-sell it, and give you either Killzone 2, inFamous, or MLB 09: The Show for free. It also seems as if there is no official street date for the Slim, so if you start hearing reports of the machine on store shelves before September 1, they might be true. This Best Buy offer may not be the last you'll see, either; we wouldn't be surprised if GameStop did something to combat the flood of old PS3 systems that will likely come their way in the next few weeks. Well, this is what happens when you wait to announce something at a particular event, rather than giving us some time to plan ahead in our shopping.

Not that we're complaining or anything, but we imagine there are plenty of ticked-off consumers out there who are none too happy about missing out on this price cut. Also, we think this Best Buy thing only applies to straight-up returns with receipts and not trade-ins.

I got mine yesterday at a BB in NH. There were only 3 left when I showed up. They`re out there alright, but maybe in limited quantities until Sept 1st.

im never getting rid of my launch day 60 gig!! its far more prettier and it has worked faithfully for me these last few yrs so it deserves to be kept and maybe a hard drive upgade for xmas!

Doesn't BB have the old "if you find it cheaper within 30 days we give you the difference" deal? Sure they do. Why would you want a game instead of your hundred bux? This doesn't make sense. If it's been longer than 30 days then too bad. You bought what you bought when you bought it.

Alienange - You missed the point son. They`ll give you back $100 dollars because of the price drop AND they`ll give you one of those games for free if you hang on to the Phat. The end result is you keep a Phat with a game for the same price as a gameless Slim.

I like my PS3 to have junk in its trunk. But petite models are also my thing so I might get one of these later. On a serious note, I want the new models for the reduced power usage for sure.

Nice to see a retailer giving an insentive to people who paid over the 299 price for their PS3's. A free game is worth it i still say the walmart deal to get rid of their Fat PS3s is really good getting LBP killzone 2 and a blue ray movie for 299 is a great deal

I just but a phat PS3 a month ago and I'm not disappointed at the news about the Slim and $100 price cut(mine was a bundle that included Killzone 2 & MGS4 and it still cost $400!)and that was at Best Buy.

well, you missed the boat on that. should've bought it before and even then it was a good deal. Heres an idea for you. buy a ps3 slim and a ps2 slim and tape it together. there you go a ps3 slim with backwards compatibility. just pretend you're charging your controller when you use the ps2 controllers.

I dont get people like that, if they were that obsessed with b/c they would have bought one back when b/c was built in like I and so many other people sensibly did.
Funny thing is that I can now get close to what I paid for my launch 60gb PAL ps3 and I cant see it depreciating much either. It will become a collectors edition due to it being the only fully featured sku available. And the PAL unit can play at 60Hz, not 50Hz like the NTSC units.

I also got my PS3 Slim yesterday at Gamestop. It is so quiet that you can't even tell it's on. It looks a lot better in person than in the pictures. Now all I need is a 32" LCD and I am good to go.

I see the new PS3 LOGO on those blu rays that come with it, is the new logo going to be the norm?

I heard Sony whining that,the full 'P L A Y S T A T I O N 3' logo we all have on our fats weren't quite visible on billboards, reason for the new 'P S 3' slim logo.

I thought things like logos aren't supposed to change until you bring out a new system? The new logo is cool though, but I don't appreciate how things are being changed anytime,anyday,anywhere this generation.

I for one thought I'll see that 'PS3' spiderman font we have on the spine of the blu ray cases with the red background on the slim

But I must admit after seeing better photos of the slim, I can say it looks sleek & sexy BUT.... the fat is still sexier. The slim is not as fugly as some us thought.

I think this kind of minimal chaos was predicted by Sony, in the end it causes a big stir about the PS3 and will ultimately make for more interest in it as supply tries to reach growing demand.

If I didn't have and love my big beast for 2 years I would take the free game and then go home and sell the system on ebay if I needed a Slim so dang much.

The slims are already being sold everywhere. We got 3 at my gamestop, and they were gone within hours.
