Top Secret: Massive PS3 Exclusive Now On The Horizon
See Full ImageYou may have heard it here before: we are aware of a truly huge PS3 exclusive title that hasn't been announced or confirmed as of yet. Now, as we have promised to keep the game under wraps, we still can't tell you what it is... But with the recent price drop, the introduction of the PS3 Slim, and more reasons than ever to have a PS3 in your entertainment center, we wanted to give you one more.
First of all, don't bother e-mailing us with desperate pleas; those e-mails will go unanswered. Secondly, you can theorize and speculate all you wish but you must always bear in mind that we did not confirm a damn thing. Thirdly, and this much we can almost promise: the game in question is something the vast majority of gamers will likely enjoy, and the only hint we can give you is that it is familiar. Well, we're talking about a massive upgrade over the last installment, but nevertheless...familiar. The good news is that we might be able to spill the beans on this as early as January or February, but we're at the mercy of Sony right now. Our source - who is no rumor-starter but the game designer currently working on the project - says his hands are tied on the issue, and we'll continue to respect that. But if everything goes well, we'd like to think this game will be ready to go by the end of 2010; that may seem like a ways off, but we consider it a damn good reason to own a PS3.
You know about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, God of War III, MAG, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, and The Last Guardian. This title will have a place in that elite group as soon as it's announced; you can be guaranteed of that. Oh, and if any of you are wondering if there's a chance the game will go multiplatform: no. Clearly it's a male dev and who has been known to have a close relationship with Sony in the past
Reading in between the lines, me thinks that BEN KNOWS WHAT DAVID JAFFE IS WORKING ON RIGHT NOW...
either that or it's exclusivity has returned to the GTA franchise...because he said it's a massive overhaul of the last installment, which leads me to believe it may not be GOW related even if Jaffe is involved because the past 3 games have been stellar...

Xra897 never said he thought it was multiplatform. He just reasoned that it was probably 3rd party because Ben didn't say it was impossible, just "Highly unlikely".
Maybe you should should actually read what the comment said. It's weird, my mind is blown by how some people chose to ignore details right in front of their face, too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Twisted Metal Head On the last game in the series on the PS2?
And if you beat the game didn't it kind of hint Twisted Metal PS3 was coming?
Also, Twisted Metal is owned by Sony, which is why Ben wrote it is highly unlikely it will go multiplat.
It is also why Sony gets to say when the developer can announce anything officially.
Also, on Heavenly Sword 2, Ninja Theory IS making a multiplat game for NamcoBandai; but it is NOT Heavenly Sword 2. Ninja Theory already said as much.
Furthermore, Ninja Theory does NOT own the rights to Heavenly Sword. Sony owns the intellectual rights to Heavenly Sword just like M$ft owns the rights to Halo.

If you just take a second to understand this, you will see that he meant that because Ben said that it was "highly unlikely" that it would go multiplat, then it still could go multi, although the chances are extremely thin. A first party game would never ever go multiplat...ever. Therefore, our basic deduction skills bring us to the conclusion that the game must be from a 3rd party developer.
However, I still doubt that this is true because I think it is a new Twisted Metal game. But the way you reacted to his statement, in a manner that basically says he could never be right about it being from a 3rd party developer, tells me that you didn't comprehend what he was trying to say correctly. If you did, you would have realized that he could definitely be onto something there. That's all.

All this causes excessive hype that the game cannot live up to. Not one game this generation has lived up to the hype as the games are built up by the media before they are even announced!
I say leave rumours and announcments-of-possible-announcements in the forums.

LoD has just been left out to dry for far too long without even a murmur so if they finally dug that back out I'd be(nicely)shocked to the core!
TMPS3 is looking like the most probable game for this slot though-Jaffe's said before that he's wanting to unveil pretty soon and in an OPMUK interview from around a year back he almost confirmed that Twisted Metal was in the works and has done many times since but always stopping saying exactly what he's actually making right now!
The only thing that makes me think it could be another game is the fact that Starhawk hasn't been confirmed but we can guess that DJ and crew are pretty well into it as the last DLC for Warhawk was eons back now and other Sony friendly devs are in similar positions. Well that and TM isn't much of a draw outside NA. In the UK/EU it's considered a pretty niche title(might surprise a few of you)but loads of people I know wouldn't be able to tell you what kind of games they are and if you asked them about "Sweet Tooth" they'd offer you a cake!
So would a new Twisted Metal be considered a game of the same scale worldwide as GOW3 and others Ben mentioned for comparison as where I live unless it was vastly altered and marketed people wouldn't, largely, know what it was about?
Funnily enough I also recall having a hell of a job getting hold of a copy of one of the TM games-they certainly weren't like a normal big release in the UK-y'know just a couple of copies at specialist game stores and that was about it IIRC.

There was an article a couple of months ago about a Jaffe post from NeoGAF saying the game, the new twisted metal, was ready to be announced but Sony had the final say and it would be announced in the coming months.
That post fits with this article.

I'm aware 14 was revealed in E3 09 but SE said they were working on a successor to 11 back in 07 which turned out to be 14. Now what I'm talking about is a game that Sony nor SE has annouced but was confirmed to be happening and that Sony was funding... Ben revealed the secret game is part of a franchise above, so I've made a list of the games--that fit the known criteria--mentioned before the above quote. Here's the ones I think are most likely within the time frame we've been given...
1) Kingdom Hearts 3
2) Resistance 3 (my choice)
3) Twisted Metal
4) Siphon Filter 5 (the 'only real competition' to MGS according to Ben)
5) Heavenly Sword 2 (rumored to have been canceled though)
6) Dark Stalkers (Ben is an RPG nut after all)
7) The Getaway (development was put on hold, so it's possible)
There were also three Capcom games mentioned...
1) Onimusha
2) Breath of Fire
3) Mega Man
BUT there was a recent article about Capcom teasing big new announcements...
These next two last appeared on the original Playstation...
1) Bushido Blade
2) Colony Wars
Finally, there's a fat chance these three will be exclusive...
1) Hitman
2) Grand Theft Auto 5
3) Earthworm Jim
So... Of the fifteen currently unannounced games above, which one could it be?

Jak and Daxter (that was my first thought)
Sly Racoon 4
Okami 2 (but Clover studios has shut down I believe)
Time Crisis 5 (now uses sony motion controls as gun)
SSX (favourite extreme sports game)
So, out of all those games, I believe Jak and Daxter or Twisted Metal are the most prominent in the rumour mill.
Mind you, we could all be completely off and be blown out of the water by something even more obvious and awesome!!!

Um...since it's said that most gamers will be familiar with the game, it should be based on one of the more popular games in PlayStation history. If you look at the best selling games on PS1, PS2 and PS3, compare the lists and look at the kinds of games Ben puts this unknown one into context with, you have a few clear choices. Next, if it's a massive upgrade over what we knew before, then it's unlikely to be a simple sequel to a game already on PS3. So it should be something that's related to a PS1 or PS2 title.

I think by now if there is still ANYONE out there that doubts the PS3 and it's library are complete idiots or just in denial.
But just a big up to you guys at PSX for actually sticking to your promise and keeping the SECRET a secret.... Any other site would have leaked it by now so they could feel elite or some sh*t like that. So mad respect to you guys on that. And I'm sure once the embargo lifts you guys will be the 1st to tell us!!!

GTA5 PS3 only.
It's a franchise hmmmm Kill.switch 2 or Black 2.
Could it be something back on the PS1 only and getting a new major haul graphic gameplay and sound wise etc ? What franchises were on PS1 but didnt make it to PS2 ?
Anyway im sick of hearing about this now lol so Ben unless you have more deffo news please no more rumours just when I forget about this (well it's in a little storage file in the back of my mind) it gets brought up again. Hahaha. anyway it will be announced soon enough guys I am sure :)

I'm sure there is a super secret game coming but the fact that the developers have leaked this to select media with the rule that they can't say anything? When has anyone ever leaked something to the media trying to keep it a secret?
Then those people from the media go online and say we know of a secret game but can't tell you about it. What do you think it is?
And if you look at the list of comments, we've just supplied a whole list of games to developers of games that will sell if they make them.
I know, it's a bit conspiracy theory-ish, but if you start seeing rumours of some of the games you mentioned popping up, (Duck Hunt 2)You'll know I'm right..lol.

Like someone else said, for someone who is a gaming journalist, you've done a hell of a job keeping this one a secret. Especially for a game that won't be out for another year or so.
A small part of me is still skeptical with you building hype for a game that no one knows about, but part of me thinks it's nice to see that you're sticking to your word. Hard to find people with actual morals these days. Especially in the media. ;D
As for what the game actually is? I think I'm going to have enough great PS3 games to keep me busy that unless you keep reminding us about it, I can forget about it until the announcement. I still haven't beaten Fallout yet! LOL

That goes for a lot of the other guesses. Resistance? Killzone? How would those even be "secret"?
If it's not Twisted Metal, I'm thinking Road Rash, but I'm not sure that "a vast majority" would love either game. Black(er) is also an interesting guess; despite being more recent than PS1 franchises, it would have to be "a massive upgrade" to have the same impact as the first game, given that most recent FPSs have surpassed the original.

That's sounding more and more like Kingdom Hearts 3 to me. Mustang75r mentioned Sony is funding a secret Square Enix project and TheHighlander pointed out that a massive upgrade makes more sense as a next gen debut. Kingdom Hearts is also familiar and beloved by legions of gamers, right? Kingdom Hearts 3 was mentioned in the original article before Ben claimed the secret game had been mentioned too.
David Jaffe is working on Twisted Metal for the PS3. OtisFeelGood already posted a link above proving this. Sony most likely reserving the TM PS3 announcement for next year so it won't get lost in the hype for the big ones this year. Most importantly, Arnold claimed PSXE doesn't know what Jaffe is working on.

Jak 4, only because those games always had mass appeal with the GTA style open world, and 3rd person shooting. THough I doubt this is it because Jak 4 is a when not an if.
Syphon Filter 5, the last game was on PSone (or PSP if you count Dark Mirror) and is a series many people will like given the guns, gadgets, and setting. I think this is the best bet.
Twisted Metal is a possibility but I don't think Ben would assume so many gamers would be interested in a car combat racing game. Yes Twisted Metal has a fan base and it is a good game but its never been a series everyone liked.
Time Splitters 4, though I don't feel to strong about that one as the series was never a big as Free Radical made it seem at times. Also after Haze I doubt they love Sony so much.
Heavenly Sword 2 but I doubt it because with GOW 3 coming in 2010 showing off a similar game might confuse the slower members of the game community.
Dark Cloud 3, but I doubt it since Level-5 is already working on White Knight 2, and last I checked most people don't like JRPGs anymore(sadly)
Let me tell you what I know its not though,
Anything from Square-Enix - lets face it, they are "controlled" by MS now and whatever they make for PS3, you can bet 360 is getting a version.
Anything from Capcom - Capcom said a while back "No more exclusives" those ended with Lost Planet, now the only thing you can buy from them is a Timed NDA about what platforms its coming to.
Anything from Kojima - Look MGS Rising aside it's not that I don't think Kojima wouldn't make another PS3 exclusive, but with his best working on Peace Walker and the B team working on Rising I think he is all but tapped out right now.
I also dont really expect this to be a Japanese game at all, especially a JRPG. Not because I doubt PSXE's connections or Ben's ability to have contacts in Japan but I get the impression this info was passed to him from a Western dev. Also most Japanese game announcements come from Japan first, it's extremely rare that a Japanese game is show or spoken about first outside of Japan.

It's not Hitman either, for one the series was never that great, 2 the last one was a 360 exclusive(meaning no PS3 version)and stunk. Nothing to get excited about there, in my opinion.
Could be something from Sony Cambridge studio, have not heard from them in a while, though it wont be MedEvil 3.

Its my opinion and taking a stab and using logic is that SONY needs a giant bomb of a game to make it happen. and I believe this PS3 exclusive will be a Rockstar developed game that we all know of............ GTA V
Its what rocketed the PS2 into history and now its SONy's turn to bring an exclusive back where it all started.
