PSXE Poll Update: Ad Campaign + Price Drop = Victory

So after GamesCom, the question became clear: with the attractive new $299 price tag, was that the final hurdle for Sony; would that finally allow them to leapfrog the competition?

Well, the really interesting part is that while the vast majority of you believe the price drop was huge for Sony, almost exactly half of those positive thinkers still believe we need to see an aggressive advertising campaign that highlights this big change. The good news is that Sony wasted little time in unveiling their "It Only Does Everything" marketing campaign that should start to see major airtime over the next few months. Heading into the holiday season, this is exactly what Sony needs; once most consumers are well aware of the facts (the best Blu-Ray player available, free PSN access, and of course, the games), they might just leap all over the cheaper, slimmer console. It will soon become the default machine on store shelves and now that the pricing is on an even keel with the competition, Sony is primed to make a serious run at the title.

That's the news that dominated GamesCom but what might dominate the Tokyo Game Show this year? That's this week's question: will it be the Japanese and US release dates for Final Fantasy XIII? Or might it be the unveiling of a 2009 launch date for Gran Turismo 5? If you're crazy optimistic, maybe you'll vote for the Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3. So, what do you think?

I'm looking forward to this Holiday Season. Sony has given me so many years of pleasure thanks to their continued existence in the realm of videogames. I'm sure there will be a tremendous push by Sony in the coming months to catch up to the 360's numbers. I know it's sad but the fact that the 360 is viewed as the winner this generation really pisses me off. It doesn't deserve it for so many reasons.

i see people being more interested now with the price drop, and the adds may draw attention. i liked the two i saw and would like to see more. most the time when i talk to someone about a ps3, they have no clue about it but they know a little about the 360. all they know about ps3 is that it is expensive.

and yes it is sad that the inferior products draw more attention and look better for some stupid reason

Why is the media still negative on the ps3? There was an article on yahoo home page "is the ps3 worth it?" because it has on ps2 b/c like the old models. How stupid there hasn't been b/c included with the last three models, So is that a reason to bad mouth the slim? while they where sucking M$ junk talking how big the elite price drop was. Only thing I can say is 120 gb ps3 slim 299.99, sh**box 120gb 299.99 GAME ON!!! Kick there ass sony.

those two are the only negatives i see on the Ps3.. BUT compared with the bunch of cons the 360 has the Ps3 is the obvious choice.

It don't think it was meant to sound that negative. The link to ps3 games after the article listed a lot of exclusives. Although it didn't have Killzone 2, Resistance 2, GT5: Prologue, Fat Princess, or other older ones...
EDIT: Infamous, too. Okay I change what I said, they skipped a shit ton of exclusives.

I think that's a valid point. I've seen people write that they'd choose a 360 over a PS3 because the PS3 can't play PS2 games. Neither can the 360.

My small local news tv station covered the xbox price drop. They only mentioned a PS3 price drop in passing during the xbox story.

Unfortunately, if past actions are any indication, Sony defines "massive airtime" rather differently than most. Killzone 2 ads were supposed to get "massive airtime" but I only saw maybe one or two airings. So here's hoping they really will be airing these ads all the time, everywhere. If they do then the PS3 will pull ahead.

I see tons of PS3 ads, including Killzone, inFAMOUS, and most recently Batman...more than 360 and Wii combined. I'm in Canada, though, so that may make a difference.

If I were Howard Stringer, I'd give a direct order to Sam Houser to make the next GTA exclusive to PS3. Of course, I'd splash 100 million dollars before discussing the in-game details!

By the way, I didn't like GTA4, but GTA franchise guarantees huge sales, and profits!

Saw a Batman commercial, it was showing off how PS3 is the only version you get to play as the joker (for now). they need more ad's showing what they have over the 360 or at least are multi, i hate seeing the huge 360 logo pop up on multiplatform games, like the Madden commercials..

To be honest, I think TGS is going to bring us more than just one of the choices in the poll. However, if Sony plans to release GT5 this year, it's imperative they begin the hype soon. Yes, for psycho's like myself, we're always hyped for GT5, but the length of dev time has definitely taken the steam out of it for some.

Call me crazy, but I think we may just hear more about the PS2 BC patent at TGS. Maybe I'm wrong, and well, doesn't really matter hugely to me cause I've got a launch model. But, it sure would jack the appeal to PS2 owners up, quite substantially.

Beyond that, there's also the motion control stuff that's promised for TGS. As well as other 1st party gems that we know about, and the ones we don't.

We could hear something regarding FFXIII, but tbh, I'm not that excited for it anymore, and have my eyes on other games that I simply find more appealing. Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain, and..of course, GT5. So, FFXIII I can take or leave... really.

Oh, by the way, for those who care, the Slim is back on top on Amazon, holding steady in first place for 13 days straight now (Tales of Vesperia for Xbox was in 1st for about 2 or 3 hrs earlier, due to a huge sale Amazon had for it yesterday). The $299 360 hasn't even breached the top 10 w00t!

i just read a article claiming they did a study and found the ps3 slim is actually slower than the phat.
i dont see how this could possibly be true, because if it was it would create problems with future games, uncharted 2 is suppose to be using 100% of the ps3s power so if its using 100% of the ps3 phats power than how could it possibly work on the slim.
unless its a a very small difference.
if thats true im going to be mighty pissed, i just put a $100 deposit on the slim today.
remember the last dev diary from eidos for batman AA?
it had a blurred out console between the 360 and PS3 im starting to think that was the ps3 slim.
well i allways thought it was, it had to be a console since it was between 2 of them so it could only be a ps3 slim or a 360 slim or a wii if it was being ported over.
only one of those has come to life now so it must of been a ps3 slim.

the study is retarded, due to the comparison shots, essentially, the PS3 slim starts up a second or two slower, plays dvd's or maybe it was a blu-ray about 7 seconds slower, but starts playing games and load games much faster, so try to piece all this crap together. you essentially get they changed some stuff around with the ram to make it access easier from the hdd or something for the games and possibly use less of the ram for the OS and such.

Oh good God.

Will people please stop this crazy "PS3 Slim is slower..." nonsense. The PS3 is not slower. Even if the thing loads a DVD or BluRay to begin playing seconds slower than the previous 'fat' model, does it also play the disc slower? Is the frame rate slower? The BluRay drive in the slim is a different model. All optical drives are a little different. Some drives spin the disc up faster than others, some may even keep the disc rotating while idle, just to speed up the launch process. The drive may not cache as much as the original drive in the PS3 "fat", or any number of other things.

Unless you can show that DVD or BD movies play at slower frame rates, or that games are slower, you need to just stop this, because it's nuts. The Cell is the same or better, the RSX is the same, the RAM is the same. Even if it takes additional seconds to launch a disc, once launched the performance of the PS3 slim is the same as the previous models.

The only real difference I've heard/seen, is that it takes a few seconds longer to boot. However, it actually loads games/levels faster than the original fat (according to what I've seen).

Went to walmart and they have a pretty Slim no bundle but the 160gig is still bundled with killzone 2,unchartered,infamous and 1 blueray movie.... the store clerk stated it's nice to see the PS3s sell, last week they sold all of their 80gigs and most of the 160 and they've already sold out once for the PS3 slim nice to see indeed...

You can't place a FFVII remake option in a poll and not expect me to select it. I know it won't happen in this year's TGS but I have to select it (hoping S-E is watching). More likely to happen in 2010 E3.
