Arkham Asylum Tops UK Charts

It's easily one of the best games of the year and as usual, gamers are quick to reward developers who generate quality productions.

In the UK, Batman: Arkham Asylum was tops for last week, and perhaps the most important fact is that it even edged out the popular Wii Sports Resort, which says a great deal about Batman's entertainment factor. The list, which you can see over at IncGamers, shows the top 20 software sales for the week of 08/28, and you'll see it looks a bit different than North America's list. ...we probably wouldn't have Ashes Cricket 2009 at #3, but we're encouraged to see Wolfenstein in at #4, because that's a game we've been hoping would garner some attention. Remember when Raven Software said if it sold more copies than Madden NFL 10 in August, we'd all get a free copy of Wolfenstein...? Yeah, that won't happen, but it's still cool to see the shooter do well (I loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein). But the day belongs to Arkham Asylum, with it's super-fluid combat, excellent pacing, and superb presentation. If you haven't given it a try yet, you're missing out on the best game of August.

And yes, that's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the list at #10. If the original has this kind of staying power, we can only imagine how insane the sequel will be...

is really that good? The demo felt like a polished Watchmen game to me?

@ohmikkie: I was almost persuaded to not get this based on the demo. The demo is misleading. The game is paced like Uncharted, so it isn't just fight, fight, fight. The game is much more open world than the demo suggests and the fighting is much more enjoyable if just for the combos. One of the most enjoyable games this gen.

I wonder how does the Joker character play. Does people actually buy the PS3 version over Xbox because of that exclusive. The game looks amazing, not my kind of game, but it's good to have more games like this in the slow summer.

I was very surprised on how good of a game Batman AA is. Everyone kept raving about it but I had to see it to believe it, and boy do I believe it! It could pass for a PS3 exclusive the quality and originality is so high, I highly recommend this game if you like playing games of any sort.

It's like the freakshow love child of Bioshock + MGS4 + God of War(Minus the Gore)

I fully agree wuth you, I can not wait to get home and get to Killer Croc's lair!!

Those 7 thugs in the room with booby trapped gargoyles kept finding me after I killed 4-5 of them. they got me 5 times in a row last night...
I need to try another route through them, almost frustrating, but the game is too much good fun to really piss me off!

You kid its a horrible taste its all bloody sports games at the preowned shelves.
Its been like that since PS1 and really irritates me to see a basket of sport themed games for Playstation at cash converters

The pre-owned cheapie bins are loaded with old sports games in the US as well. It's the nature of that genre with new editions every year. What's attempting to be sold as used is no reflection on what people play, enjoy and hang on to.

Everyone just wants the newer version of the game because EA (EA!!!) advertise that it will be better, not always the case though.

I played the demo, I'm glad they got the voice actors from the animated series. My only problem with the demo was the terrible lip syncing. It was so bad, I had to close my eyes when they talked.

That issue is not there in the full game.

Trust me it is freaking awesome. I bought it Friday and have gotten 45% through (late nights all weekend and yesterday). I have loved every minute of it. It is hard enough to make you retry things but not to the point of throwing your controller (at least on Normal Difficulty). The AI is smart, and the fighting is so fluid. It is a awesome game all the way around.

True batman style. Yuou have sneaking up and slient takeouts, puzzle solving, wicked gadgets, XP level upgrading, and more. At least rent it for the weekend, you will not be disappointed.

Lots of Batman are fun, fighting, gliding etc. It's the detective walking round looking for clues bit I am not that keen on. Once you know where your going its great fun onward with the story. Finding the riddlers ? dotted round as I go trying to get that elusive one, trying to figure out how to get it (sod it leave it i'll come back to it, needing to get on with the story.)

Enjoyed the large Scarecrow part. Reminded me a lot like God Of War in parts. Can see the ideas of some other games in there.

@LV the forums may not be to your taste. I find there is some decent conversations back there with a lot of the regulars from this site including Dillon and World plus loads of others. Dont knock the forum till you have tried it peeps. It's great fun honest. Plus Ben and Arnold speak to you there like they do here too so you feel very welcome. :)

Game is awesome, Excessive Batman AA lead me to completing the story in 2 days, I really regret that now but I guess I could try the next difficulty level.
BTW does anyone find it hard to get really high on the leaderboard for the challenges?

Its weird that an American comic book character can top the charts in the UK but not in the US. I'm a lil' ashamed at my country's taste. Too much Wii crap and too lil' quality software. We'll see how the NPD numbers look.

And is that a cricket game? And who's still buying CoD4?

Wasn't a fan of the demo so was gonna let this one slip by. But after reading all the wicket reviews for the game, reckon I'll trade in some old crap for it tomorrow.
Gotta respectfully disagree with LV, I'm new here and find the forums very informative. So far get the vibe of a nice close knit community of gamers as I always see the same names posting. Very enjoyable!

The demo did NOT do this game justice at all. It could've really been put together better. Hell, it's worth getting the game just for all of the riddles. Just don't pull your hair out trying to get to unreachable ones. There is a solution later and you usually revisit each area at least once. I thought the backtracking was gonna piss me off at first, but the scenarios change each time you pass through them. My only complaint is that there could've been more regular enemies than just thugs. Ninjas or something. That's a VERY minor complaint though. To put it nicely, if you don't play this game then it's your loss.
