PSN Average User Is Male, About 28, With A Decent Income

Sadly, if you play online a lot, you will run into the most insulting (and therefore embarrassing) idiots that ever walked the face of the planet. There is some argument as to whether the PSN or Live users are more childish, but PSN director of operations Eric Lempel gives us a clue.

Putting aside Destructoid's typical hostility that always borders on Microsoft fanboyism (although that particular article might not "border" on anything and may be a flat-out admission), we find that Lempel says the average PSN user is a male adult with a good job to boot:

"Right now, it's primarily male. The average age is 28 years old, in usually the middle- to higher-income range. They over-index against those with graduate degrees. But it's expanding.

What we're finding ever since we've introduced services like the video download service, we're getting more of the household on the PlayStation Network. Some of the top rentals and sales on the video side have been content that probably doesn't appeal exactly to that 28-year-old male. It's more those movies that are geared toward women."

This does make plenty of sense, if one wishes to examine the situation logically. For most of the past three years, the PS3 was by far the most expensive console on the market, and only the hardcore and/or those with a little extra money to burn would purchase it. That, and those with deeper pockets tend to buy the latest and greatest - Blu-Ray included - the instant it becomes available. Therefore, to find the average user is 28 and somewhat well-educated with money in the bank isn't a huge shock. But Lempel is right; the more casual content that is available on the PSN, combined with the new competitive price tag, the more we'll see different stats with varying demographics.

We don't know how this compares to Live, but let's just say that in my experience with both services, the number of high-pitched, low-IQ voices that flood into my headset on Live is much higher than those on the PSN. Just ignore the rest of Destructoid's usual slop.

Fu**tards and a**hats are two of my favorite words. They apply to people so well, you know? I'm tired of running into the kids (via PSN) who use "snap" way too much and then there are those mom's that will come on the mic and ask some users to refrain from their language because she is trying to teach her son how to behave and go to church. Um, excuse me? Why is your young son (with very high voice) playing on a game rated much higher than his age if you're trying to be the moral teacher? Sorry, here I go with the rants.

average age seems about right. all my ps3 friends are all between 21-24 and we're all recent college grads. I don't know what they mean by 'decent' income but usually if a good exclusive is on the way (as they have been in 09: Killzone 2, Infamous) we'll drop the $60 on day/week 1. Same for PSN releases: Flower, FFVII, Fat Princess...

Fanboyism has always been around but It's seems to have gotten much worse with introduction of the Internet and the Xbox. I don't ever remember my friends who owned Sega products telling me how much I sucked prefering Nintendo and Sony ad much as Xbots do it now. Ever since Halo and Xbox came about the nerd wars began to wage. Xbots have a lot of pent up nerdrage. Think it comes from living in their mothers basements and not having girlfriends. Jk!

This is where I think Sony has played things well. They spent three years selling to the cream of the crop at the top of the gaming market, and sold 25 million units. Now the price drop brings the PS3 to the more mainstream audience.

It actually looks like the world economy may have bottomed out. Sony has survived the recession with the PS3 priced higher than the competition and yet selling well despite the price. Now they drop their price just as economies are poised to lift. HDTV prices are at an all time low, and hardware costs for BluRay are dropping. The mainstream market looks like it's about to go HD. Sony has put themselves in a good position to take advantage of that trend.

With the PS3 at a mainstream price, HDTV at a mainstream price, and big name games dropping regularly for the next 6-9 months, we ought to see a building momentum with the PS3.

What was it they said in that movie? "If you build it, they will come."

Clearly Microsoft won't take this lying down, but I don't see what their counter is. This generation has always been about the transition to HD. The PS3 is clearly more of an HD device than the 360 with the BluRay capability. Microsoft only has downloads and streaming, and the reality is that broadband Internet isn't ready to stream or download multi-GB HD media.

Sony has built block by block on the solid foundation that PS3 provides. Sony's motion control scheme builds on technologies already in place as well.

I have this mental image of Sony building a tower out of building blocks. Their tower looks like something an Incan stone mason would build. On the other hand Microsoft is building something that looks like a Jenga tower, late in the game after a number of blocks have been removed.

I've been glad to see PS3Fanboy pulled back into Joystiq rather than being its own site. I found that site more annoying than places like Kotaku because they were being more subtle and subversive about their 360 fanboyism versus being out in the open about it.

For a while, I was following PS3Fanboy (before I found this site), and it was just depressing me about the PS3. It made me feel like even the Playstation supporters don't really like the PS3. It took me a good bit of time to figure out that they were actually 360 fans in disguise trying to steer PS3 fans away from the PS3. Every article put a slightly (or not so slightly) negative spin on the PS3, even when the article was covering something positive.

I didn't make the connection once and for all until I found articles about the same identical subjects on their sister site, Xbox360Fanboy, which appeared to be copy and pasted with edits to make them specific to each console. The nature of these articles should have meant that just changing the console name was all that was needed (they had nothing to do with comparisons between the two consoles). But instead the 360 version of each article was altered for totally positive spin. And the PS3 version was altered for totally negative spin.

Now PS3Fanboy just goes to the PS3 section of Joystiq. Their article about the PS3 slim release pretty much glosses over all of the major ramifications of that system, and instead spends its time drawing attention to the lack of an included HDMI cable. As if that were the central element of the whole ballgame.

But at least it's not a site with a name and appearance that would mislead you to believe they were allies of the Playstation brand anymore.

My thoughts as well too. When I found out that PS3fanboy was going to merge into Joystiq, I searched the net and found this place.

I am glad I did. Sure the PS3 is not perfect, but their approach was rediculous. How this site covers the PS3 is top of the line in my book.

But hey, Joystiq's loss is PSX's gain. I love this site.

A lot of the games for the PS3 early on were geared toward the hard-core gamers. Now with the price drop Sony will look hard at the demographic changes on PSN. Kind of a Catch 22 situation really. To get more wide ranging demographics on PSN you need to have games geared toward that crowd, to get those kind of games made developers need to see there is a market for them.

Personally, I think it is a matter of time before we see all the wide ranging games on the PS3 from Wii like games to GT5. When that happens, people will think twice about getting the Wii. I believe Ben already commented on this about the Wii sales numbers dropping like a stone. (namely poor software) For the PS3 to be THE machine (I think it is already) it has to appeal to all types of gamers/users. You see this is what they're thinking in their latest ad campaign 'It Only Does Everything.'

I just followed that link. Don't think I've ever read a Destructoid article before. Holy cow, you guys aren't kidding. That Jim guy is about as rabid a 360 fankid as it gets. Just... wow.

I mean... yeah... sure, Jim. Clearly, an early build of Bayonetta for the PS3 that doesn't have a smooth frame rate proves that the end product will suck on the PS3, and the PS3 is a horrible console. *rolls eyes*

I especially like it whenever Jim pauses for a moment from taking a chainsaw to Sony to claim that he's just reporting the news and isn't biased. And then jabs at those 'PS3 fankids' for calling foul.

I read a comment further up about CrashBox fanboys living in basements and not being in relationships...and coming to think of it, I'm not 100% sure I know someone with a PleaseFixMe that has a significant other :p

Anyway, a little off topic. In Version 3.00, did anyone have any problems? I live in the UK nd everyone I've spoken to has BBCiPlayer on their console (it's a TV show playback programe for those who don't know) and I don't...I also don't have the scrolling news in the corner :S although i'm not too bothered about that...Other than that I'm liking this update :D

It makes sense. 12 year olds with moms who are on a little budget buy the Xbox360 for their children. That has obviously changed due to the ps3's price cut. A lot of ps3 users are more mature because they have lived long enough to work and purchase things for themselves. I am not saying PSN is made up of mostly adults; it is made up of also teens. Most of these teens are between 15-19. They are more mature than pre-teens-12 year olds. There are some friendly people on XBL, but are quite rare. The 12 year olds are extremely childish. If you try to reason with them; they retort saying something like this: "Shut up noobtube! Fu*k you! That's why I was with your mom the other night". Half of them can't get girls their age, let alone get women twice or three times their age. They are everywhere. There is nothing you can do about it, but accept it.

It seems the author is projecting how he and other 360 fans behave when they discuss the PS3. Now before I got my PS3 two years ago the only thing that got me to consider a 360 was it was cheaper and it had "Gears of War" but when the 40gb PS3 and the 399.99 price drop came along it made my choice a little bit easy.

I just don't get the hate that 360 fans have over the PS3, I may prefer the PS3 over the 360 but I don't spend days and nights trashing the 360 and their fans.

As for PSN the only trouble I had was people that decided they wanted their rave music do the talking for them. On the bright side I had a attractive girl play Nazi Zombies on COD:World at War with me.

As for "Destructoid" giving "InFamous" a 6.5 that writer had to be an 360 employee or high on PCP.

I thought it would be better but so far I don't mind it. I don't like that they enlarged the font too much though. Plus where are the custom avatars? Some are reporting that Uncharted crashes often after 3.0. I played for a bit and didn't have any issues

destructoid has got to be the worst game reviews site ever. they gave infamous a 6.5 for f*** sake. 8.5 AT LEAST. personally: 9.2

Their mission is to distructify Sony, but you can only trash talk sweet games for so long. Those fanboys are about to be left in the dust the second they trash GT5 or GOWIII.

I have a feeling he'll bring GT5 down as low as he can and get away with it because of Forza and PC sim fans.

But he won't be able to touch GOWIII, coz' there will be just nothing out there that even resembles GOW and it's hardcore/applecore-ness.

Yeah man, now you guys have seen the site and are experiencing the hate (the friendly kind of hate over the internet, of course) that I've been feeling towards them.. since forever!!!

He should get shot in MAG then ripped to shreds by Kratos, and then wrap himin a body-bag and stick it in the boot of a Nissan GT-R and do 48hrs of Nurburgring.

i had to laugh today when i picked up my ps3 slim surprisingly i was the first one to buy one.
than the EB add for the slim came on saying the most powerful gaming console has taken a diet and has plummeted to $499.
and now they have it on their website, brave move.
i wonder how many hate emails their going to get now.
on a not so happy note i lost all my game saves BBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
guess im not getting that plat for KZ2 after all :(
and i just finished downloading pain, fatal exteria XD, fat princess and ratchet and clank quest for booty.
now i have to download them all again GGGGGGRRR
god dam it why does sony have to make such simple things so difficult.
why do they make it that every time you put in your HDD it automatically formats it.
they should of made it that it checks what format its in, if its not fat 32 than format it if it is than theres no need for a format.
last time i checked the only point for formatting a HDD is to change the format or wipe the drive its already in the correct format so why format it?

Every1 needs to bear in mind that lots of people lie about their age so they can play games and download movies. I'd say that would bring down the average age a little.

I've encountered more teens on mics that can converse more intelligently than older people. Older folks usually make a lot of racket, sound crazy & talk to themselves unless they are on an FPS.
