Firmware 3.00 Throwing Dual Shock 3 Controllers For A Loop

Although firmware update 3.00 really is a huge update, the majority of PlayStation 3 owners haven't responded too favorably.

And perhaps the biggest issue has started to reveal itself: you will find similar complaints in most all game forums online, but you can check out this steadily growing thread in the official PlayStation forums to get the gist. Basically, it seems as if the recent update is causing problems with the Dual Shock 3 (but not with the Sixaxis, apparently). A few users are being even more specific in saying that it's the Ceramic White DS3 that's the victim more often than not, although the problem seems to extend to any DS3 out there. What happens is that while the LED lights function, telling you the controller is activated, you can't actually do anything. One simple solution is to simply re-sync the controller with the system after the update has completed, but that doesn't apparently work for everyone. For my part, I had this happen to my silver Dual Shock 3, but after restarting the machine (I have the new Slim), everything was fine.

Anyway, we'll see what Sony has to say about this; the good news is that this bug doesn't appear to be infecting massive groups of PS3 owners. Hopefully, it's nothing too serious.

Ben there is also a problem with Uncharted. I along with several others I know are unable to play Uncharted. It keeps freezing up minutes into the game. I just got a new copy of Uncharted in the mail today from Amazon (had a great deal going) and it's skipping as well. I've noticed it being talked about on forums. I hope Sony fixes this ASAP. I'm pretty pissed off about it.

I wondered about that and fired up my copy of Uncharted, I managed to get to the firefight after you parachute to the island without a freeze up. That was a good 30+ minutes into the game. I'm running it on a PS3 60GB with an upgraded HDD, Firmware 3.0 and a DualShock 3.

So if anyone is prone to this one it should be me since I have both the dualshock 3 controller and Uncharted on an older PS3... I haven't noticed any issues with de-sync of the controller. This was a problem way, way back in the early days. The controller would sometimes de-sync and you had to hit the reset button on the underside of the controller to get it back. That was fixed in a firmware update.

As with every firmware update, for a week or two after the firmware update people are prone to blame the update for any glitch. We need to be careful not to be seeing faults where there are none, or of making more of a fault than there is.

Your copy of Uncharted is new you said, is it the GH version? Is it freezing during gameplay or the movies?

Mine is freezing during gameplay, not the movies. First it was 15 minutes into the game, the next it was 20sh. Several friends are having the same issue and on multiple SKUs. Yes my copy of Uncharted is new, it did the same thing with the older copy.

What PS3 model?

Also, I've completed the game several times, so there are no trophies for me to get. I'm wondering whether the problem could be trophy related since there is no way I will be re-awarded the trophies.

I'll boot it up under another user and see what happens with trophies. There are too many variables for it to be something specific to one model or another, or one version of the game. And since it's apparently related to the firmware update, it is most likely a trophy thing since Uncharted 1 doesn't do anything online.

Well I have both a Fat60gig and a new 120gig Slim, several friends of mine have the newer 80 gig models and another has the uncharted bundle 160gig PS3, irony that he can't play the game that came with his PS3.

I picked up Uncharted and FF Dissidia (omg Dissidia is amazing, 12 hours in and I'm still figuring out stuff, and only on my third character) and I've played like 4 hours of Uncharted, maybe more ...and it's been working fine for me *shrug* I have an 80gb b/c ps3. Also, I've been getting trophies just fine, wouldn't even notice there was a problem going on.

Just tried again on a fresh user profile with a completely new game. It's not the trophies as I was getting trophies for various things in the game I got as far as the fortress before I quit. No issues at all.

Whatever it is, it's very patchy. I have a PS3 60GB with BC (as Charger says, the REAL PS3) and am using a black DualShock 3 controller with the rumble/feedback turned off. I really can't see any common factors here, and I'm getting no lock-up.

My controller is configured to automatically turn off to save power, that happens after about 15 minutes of inactivity. Do you use the auto-off feature on the controller?

60 Gb launch system, black DS3, new copy of Uncharted (never played it before 3.0)

10 hours played; trophies working, no freezes, only one instance of slowdown during a cut-scene (which didn't repeat when I replayed that bit). Touch wood. I'm sorry to hear others are having problems.

There are probably more people playing (or trying to play) Uncharted now than any time since November 2007.

I noticed my dual shock is not as responsive. When pressing the Select button it doesn't respond to the 1st press but then second. I read about uncharted this afternoon. Mine worked ok but then again I only played for about 15 minutes.

I got through the first 30-40 minutes (skipping the movies as well, so it was a good 30-40 minutes) and was using a Dualshock 3 controller. No lock up for me either.

The Dualshock isn't one of the white ones, not that that should make a difference.

It is responsive, you just have an extra option there. Look at when you hit 'select' during video playback. There is an extra reaction so you don't just hit 'select' get the info. then hit 'select' again and go back to without the info. I thought the same thing too until I paid attention to what was happening when I hit the 'select' button the second time.

Well I for one love the update. The "what's new" app is pretty sweet :)

I think the reason people are mad is because this update was given the name
"update 3.0" and when we are getting an update with a .0 in the end(ex1.0,2.0,3.0) people tend to expect alot of new features, and while this update brought some sweet features(IMO) It didn't bring anything we describe as "kicka$$". People were expecting cross game chat, and
even though I'm sure Sony can somehow find holes in microsoft pantent for it I do not believe Sony will ever give us this. Think about it, behind backward compability, cross game chat is the 2nd most wanted feature and
Sony has yet to give it to us.

Back on topic, I have the 60 gig ps3(the REAL PS3) and I use a DS3 and I have not had any issues with it, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Reason to have 2 copies of a game:

1: Your first copy stopped working, or so you believe until finding out it's actually a firmware update.

2: A certain website is running a deal where you can get a brand new copy of one of your favorite games for under $20 dollars, allowing you to possess a brand new copy while giving one of your friends your old version as a pre fall gift just to be nice.

3: You just dont give a damn and roll the cash like dice, or something like that.

i dont like this firmware 3.0 update. the fonts are bigger but uglier, the background is vague and dimming when you choose into a group, the ps3 logo title does not make sound anymore when you start a game, and the overall feeling is not more sleek, it is , conversely, more dull.

just dont understand why they need to constantly update that and make it worse, instead of just focusing making the freaking games.

The firmware team is separate from the PSN team and the game development team. They are closer to the hardware guys. Decisions regarding logos and such are not taken by the firmware team, that would most likely be marketing. The firmware guys just implement the requested changes.

You have three fonds, the 'Rounded' font is a bit larger than before, and would look too big if you had it selected before the update. To be honest I never saw much difference between the three available fonts, so with the changes to 3.0 at least the Rounded is distinct from the others based on it's appearance. Also the much larger 'Rounded' font is very nice on a 1080p desktop display, the default font was just a wee bot on the tiny side for many before. So it's all good.

I really dont know what it is. but i dont have any problems with my ps3. its overly used and abused by multiple people. relocated to different houses, stayed on for more than a week without turning it off. played ps1 and ps2 games on it. changed the HDD to a 500 gigger. i have the 3.0 update but no problems.
maybe u guys should come to southern california and buy the ps3 from my local gamestop. =)

only problems ive ever had that was related to the ps3 was sometimes the ps home freezes on me like once a month. the analog stick on the sixaxis controller got kind of loose. so my character moves on its own sometimes when i leave the controller by itself. so i sold it and got a DS3.

I watched people just flood PlayStation blog with comments about how much they hate 3.00. Even blog posts having nothing to do with firmware 3.00 are totally spammed with it.

Because the font size is a little bigger? Really?

I mean... most of the complaints I've read about the new firmware seem to revolve around nitpicking aesthetics. And, frankly, the new aesthetics are just fine. It didn't actually change much at all, and people are screaming about it. I really don't get it.

If nobody had mentioned that the font size was bigger than before, I probably wouldn't have even noticed. Seriously. It's pretty slight.

Why are people complaining so bitterly over extremely minor details?

I have only one complaint about the new firmware myself. I'd like an option to turn off the ticker. I don't loath it, but I do find it distracting.

At least the battery display doesn't cover up the time anymore. That's nice.

If people are really running into technical problems with FW 3.00, that at least is something legitimate to complain about now. But I'd seen very little of that in a sea of hateful comments about oh noes gray boxes around friends list entries.

when people like something the way it is and it gets changed when there was nothing wrong with it in the first place, they are obviously not going to appreciate it.
that said, i'm not one of those complaining. if i have any gripe i would say its with the "Whats New" feature copying the look of the Wii and, yes, the gray boxes are pretty lame haha but i can deal

I don't like the bigger font much but it doesn't make me hate it. I was over it in like 5 minutes. For the most part I like 3.0. Dont think it was needed but I have noticed some perormance improvements. Doest get hung up as much when opening the xmb while playing a game for one example. They need to allow you access to the xmb while using the web browser.

100% agreed. The only thing anyone should be complaining about is lockups during games or bricking of systems. Slight changes to the look and feel? If that's all people can find to complain about, perhaps they need more fulfilling lives outside their PS3's font selection?

Font size preference is similar, at least for me, to desktop screen resolution. I much prefer to have smaller fonts than the large ones. I hate going to a co-workers computer and have to use the old 800x600 with over-sized font and cramped windows.

Sony did some things right (battery indicator, sorting of game save files, dynamic themes, and new noise canceller for headsets). Though forcing unwanted change will always irritate some users. The new ticker, larger font, and ugly friends list is very distracting and just sloppy. There were some great ideas in the firmware update, just poorly executed in my opinion. What was once a simple and stylish XMB has become more of a cluster f**k (pre-edited just for B.Dutka).

The dual channel audio output seems to be flakey. I tried it using HDMI to my TV and composite to my stereo. It sounds terrible. There is a minor timing issue that causes the sound to have a minor echo which completely defeats the purpose of having the feature.

I applaud Sony for trying to improve the PS3, but seriously I want more game related features for my game console than more advertising.

I'm not defending the sort of whining on the PS blog, but how could you not notice the larger font? As many have said, I thought my video settings had been set to 480p. Are you using an HDTV?

Yes. I have a 65" inch 1080p monster of a TV.

I think I didn't really notice the font size had changed because I am not offended by larger font sizes.

I have noted that a lot of people do seem to like to set very high resolutions and very tiny fonts on their PC's, then park their heads about 2 inches from the screen. And I don't subscribe to that. I produces eye strain and vision problems.

And, in case your wondering, my vision is better than 20/20. I can read tiny text from across the room. But I don't _like_ to.

It hasn't bricked my system yet so I'm just grateful for that as I was trying to hold off for a few days on this update as I did have one brick my PS3 sometime ago and as it happened the release coincided with me upgrading the hd in my 40GB Real PS3 to a 320GB drive (smallest I could find these days) and when I put the new drive in it didn't give me the polite 'format hard drive' screen so i had to download firmware to a usb stick and do the select+start. of course the only one on the Sony website was 3.0 so I was stuck with installing that and once I did a restore of my full backup to the new drive it did reload everything but it was still 3.0 (I had hoped it would restore it back to the old firmware version as well), so I got stuck with having to do the ugprade basically. My new DS3 (ceramic blue) worked fine, though.

Given their track record with firmware updates Sony really should make them optional at least for a week or two after their release rather then requiring them installed to get to the PSN, etc.

The new option to set multiple audio outputs is kind of neat-o.

A lot of the changes will be under the hood, and we won't see them. Sony made some changes to the low level architecture to free up more memory for games to use. Some of the OS has to remain resident in RAM even when a game is running, to provide basic OS services and in-game XMB, custom music, networking, friends list, etc...

Each firmware update has been an incremental upgrade and the memory taken up by the resident part of the OS has been reduced each time. Firmware 3.0 makes changes in many areas, and is a visual overhaul, it also makes changes to the trophy system. 3.0 also frees up more memory for games, which requires some restructuring of the resident portion of the OS to make it smaller. So the changes are there, they are just not visible to users.

You're right, they should talk about it somewhere. But they rarely do. Usually any information like that comes out through comments by developers.

Can you listen to music and play games yet??

I like this new update, the only thing I find annoying about it is that I don't have BBCiPlayer in a new "TV" section on my XMB when all my friends do. That's it.

I like the larger font as I don't have the best eyesight, I like the boxes around the friends 'cos you can simultaneously see what everyone is doing, and easily. The new clock looks better than the old one. The little circle thing being replaced by the rotating clock hands is a nice touch, and the sparkly wave is cool :)

I honestly didn't notice they took the PS3 bit out of the start of the game though...whats that all about? It takes the same time to load anyway!

How about something as simple as listen to music while you do anything or everything on your PS3?

I like that I can browse the web while listening to music, but why can't I browse the store this way? Or adjust system settings?

For a company with a long history in music devices, you would think they would have thought of this.

Well yeah, I do. I have my laptop for my music, but when I go round my nephews or cousins for example, they are nto so fortunate as me to have both, and so listening to music through your PS3 at the same time would be nice for the people who don't have the option of mulitple machines, that's all I'm saying :)

Not been able to play your own music in games really annoys me. All first party games should support it, the last game that annoyed me in this way was inFamous, I cannot stress how much this really really annoys me, it can really effect the replay of some games when you are stuck with some cheesy soundtrack, listening to a track that does your head in for the umteenth time.. aaarrrgggghhhhhh!!

This one thing the xbox got right straight from the start, I thought Sony would address this with the first release of the PS3, and was actually surprised when no support what so was included on initial release.

I'm surprised how many people in here have Silver DS3s, like me. Haha. I haven't experienced any problems on my Silver Japanese DS3.

The new XMB is so cool. I also like that they finally moved the battery meter so it's not overlapping the clock, and being able to see what friend's are playing without highlighting every name.

Reading those threads, I see why I despise the Internet. Nothing but little pre-teen munchers with attitudes and crappy typing skills.

I'm not downloading any firmware until it's stable. Maybe the next firmware update will fix it. Hopefully, by this time Katamari Forever arrives, these problems will be quashed. I'll just stay offline.

Hi everyone, I'm not new to the PS family, but new to the PS3 club. I wondered if anyone else here has played or is playing The Darkness and if FW 3.0 affected anyone else vibration function for said game. I like it quite a lot and I swore it rumbled for it before 3.0 was installed. I tend to like the vibing option and find it enhances certain games, such as FPS like The Darkness.
I love the feeling of the knockback when firing off the weapons especially, and it also helps to indicate when receiving damage. So that's what I was wondering, anyeone else experiencing this? The vibration function does work for others I've tried before and after 3.0, such as Burnout Paradise and Saints Row 2. So if anyone could let me know or possibly try it with 3.0 and give me some feedback on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks once again. Peace and later.
