Firmware 3.00 Throwing Dual Shock 3 Controllers For A Loop
Although firmware update 3.00 really is a huge update, the majority of PlayStation 3 owners haven't responded too favorably.
And perhaps the biggest issue has started to reveal itself: you will find similar complaints in most all game forums online, but you can check out this steadily growing thread in the official PlayStation forums to get the gist. Basically, it seems as if the recent update is causing problems with the Dual Shock 3 (but not with the Sixaxis, apparently). A few users are being even more specific in saying that it's the Ceramic White DS3 that's the victim more often than not, although the problem seems to extend to any DS3 out there. What happens is that while the LED lights function, telling you the controller is activated, you can't actually do anything. One simple solution is to simply re-sync the controller with the system after the update has completed, but that doesn't apparently work for everyone. For my part, I had this happen to my silver Dual Shock 3, but after restarting the machine (I have the new Slim), everything was fine.
Anyway, we'll see what Sony has to say about this; the good news is that this bug doesn't appear to be infecting massive groups of PS3 owners. Hopefully, it's nothing too serious.

So if anyone is prone to this one it should be me since I have both the dualshock 3 controller and Uncharted on an older PS3... I haven't noticed any issues with de-sync of the controller. This was a problem way, way back in the early days. The controller would sometimes de-sync and you had to hit the reset button on the underside of the controller to get it back. That was fixed in a firmware update.
As with every firmware update, for a week or two after the firmware update people are prone to blame the update for any glitch. We need to be careful not to be seeing faults where there are none, or of making more of a fault than there is.
Your copy of Uncharted is new you said, is it the GH version? Is it freezing during gameplay or the movies?

Also, I've completed the game several times, so there are no trophies for me to get. I'm wondering whether the problem could be trophy related since there is no way I will be re-awarded the trophies.
I'll boot it up under another user and see what happens with trophies. There are too many variables for it to be something specific to one model or another, or one version of the game. And since it's apparently related to the firmware update, it is most likely a trophy thing since Uncharted 1 doesn't do anything online.

Whatever it is, it's very patchy. I have a PS3 60GB with BC (as Charger says, the REAL PS3) and am using a black DualShock 3 controller with the rumble/feedback turned off. I really can't see any common factors here, and I'm getting no lock-up.
My controller is configured to automatically turn off to save power, that happens after about 15 minutes of inactivity. Do you use the auto-off feature on the controller?

As always Highlander you're available to give tech support, can't thank you enough. Especially since I'm sure I annoy the hell out of you with my pointless comments.

10 hours played; trophies working, no freezes, only one instance of slowdown during a cut-scene (which didn't repeat when I replayed that bit). Touch wood. I'm sorry to hear others are having problems.
There are probably more people playing (or trying to play) Uncharted now than any time since November 2007.

I think the reason people are mad is because this update was given the name
"update 3.0" and when we are getting an update with a .0 in the end(ex1.0,2.0,3.0) people tend to expect alot of new features, and while this update brought some sweet features(IMO) It didn't bring anything we describe as "kicka$$". People were expecting cross game chat, and
even though I'm sure Sony can somehow find holes in microsoft pantent for it I do not believe Sony will ever give us this. Think about it, behind backward compability, cross game chat is the 2nd most wanted feature and
Sony has yet to give it to us.
Back on topic, I have the 60 gig ps3(the REAL PS3) and I use a DS3 and I have not had any issues with it, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

1: Your first copy stopped working, or so you believe until finding out it's actually a firmware update.
2: A certain website is running a deal where you can get a brand new copy of one of your favorite games for under $20 dollars, allowing you to possess a brand new copy while giving one of your friends your old version as a pre fall gift just to be nice.
3: You just dont give a damn and roll the cash like dice, or something like that.

just dont understand why they need to constantly update that and make it worse, instead of just focusing making the freaking games.

You have three fonds, the 'Rounded' font is a bit larger than before, and would look too big if you had it selected before the update. To be honest I never saw much difference between the three available fonts, so with the changes to 3.0 at least the Rounded is distinct from the others based on it's appearance. Also the much larger 'Rounded' font is very nice on a 1080p desktop display, the default font was just a wee bot on the tiny side for many before. So it's all good.

but i must say it looks much better and smaller than the pics and the buttons are better than i expected.
and the lighting up buttons won me over, i guess the saying you cant judge a book by its cover is true.
its louder than what i was expecting though :( and the internet is really wired, it took me 10 minutes to update the FW (normally takes 1 hour)but syncing my trophies took an hour which normally takes a minute max.
hmmmm wired hopefully it was a one off thing, and my downloads will be faster with the slim.

I really dont know what it is. but i dont have any problems with my ps3. its overly used and abused by multiple people. relocated to different houses, stayed on for more than a week without turning it off. played ps1 and ps2 games on it. changed the HDD to a 500 gigger. i have the 3.0 update but no problems.
maybe u guys should come to southern california and buy the ps3 from my local gamestop. =)
only problems ive ever had that was related to the ps3 was sometimes the ps home freezes on me like once a month. the analog stick on the sixaxis controller got kind of loose. so my character moves on its own sometimes when i leave the controller by itself. so i sold it and got a DS3.

Because the font size is a little bigger? Really?
I mean... most of the complaints I've read about the new firmware seem to revolve around nitpicking aesthetics. And, frankly, the new aesthetics are just fine. It didn't actually change much at all, and people are screaming about it. I really don't get it.
If nobody had mentioned that the font size was bigger than before, I probably wouldn't have even noticed. Seriously. It's pretty slight.
Why are people complaining so bitterly over extremely minor details?
I have only one complaint about the new firmware myself. I'd like an option to turn off the ticker. I don't loath it, but I do find it distracting.
At least the battery display doesn't cover up the time anymore. That's nice.
If people are really running into technical problems with FW 3.00, that at least is something legitimate to complain about now. But I'd seen very little of that in a sea of hateful comments about oh noes gray boxes around friends list entries.

that said, i'm not one of those complaining. if i have any gripe i would say its with the "Whats New" feature copying the look of the Wii and, yes, the gray boxes are pretty lame haha but i can deal

Sony did some things right (battery indicator, sorting of game save files, dynamic themes, and new noise canceller for headsets). Though forcing unwanted change will always irritate some users. The new ticker, larger font, and ugly friends list is very distracting and just sloppy. There were some great ideas in the firmware update, just poorly executed in my opinion. What was once a simple and stylish XMB has become more of a cluster f**k (pre-edited just for B.Dutka).
The dual channel audio output seems to be flakey. I tried it using HDMI to my TV and composite to my stereo. It sounds terrible. There is a minor timing issue that causes the sound to have a minor echo which completely defeats the purpose of having the feature.
I applaud Sony for trying to improve the PS3, but seriously I want more game related features for my game console than more advertising.

I think I didn't really notice the font size had changed because I am not offended by larger font sizes.
I have noted that a lot of people do seem to like to set very high resolutions and very tiny fonts on their PC's, then park their heads about 2 inches from the screen. And I don't subscribe to that. I produces eye strain and vision problems.
And, in case your wondering, my vision is better than 20/20. I can read tiny text from across the room. But I don't _like_ to.

Given their track record with firmware updates Sony really should make them optional at least for a week or two after their release rather then requiring them installed to get to the PSN, etc.
The new option to set multiple audio outputs is kind of neat-o.

Each firmware update has been an incremental upgrade and the memory taken up by the resident part of the OS has been reduced each time. Firmware 3.0 makes changes in many areas, and is a visual overhaul, it also makes changes to the trophy system. 3.0 also frees up more memory for games, which requires some restructuring of the resident portion of the OS to make it smaller. So the changes are there, they are just not visible to users.

I like this new update, the only thing I find annoying about it is that I don't have BBCiPlayer in a new "TV" section on my XMB when all my friends do. That's it.
I like the larger font as I don't have the best eyesight, I like the boxes around the friends 'cos you can simultaneously see what everyone is doing, and easily. The new clock looks better than the old one. The little circle thing being replaced by the rotating clock hands is a nice touch, and the sparkly wave is cool :)
I honestly didn't notice they took the PS3 bit out of the start of the game though...whats that all about? It takes the same time to load anyway!

I like that I can browse the web while listening to music, but why can't I browse the store this way? Or adjust system settings?
For a company with a long history in music devices, you would think they would have thought of this.

This one thing the xbox got right straight from the start, I thought Sony would address this with the first release of the PS3, and was actually surprised when no support what so was included on initial release.

The new XMB is so cool. I also like that they finally moved the battery meter so it's not overlapping the clock, and being able to see what friend's are playing without highlighting every name.

I'm not downloading any firmware until it's stable. Maybe the next firmware update will fix it. Hopefully, by this time Katamari Forever arrives, these problems will be quashed. I'll just stay offline.

I love the feeling of the knockback when firing off the weapons especially, and it also helps to indicate when receiving damage. So that's what I was wondering, anyeone else experiencing this? The vibration function does work for others I've tried before and after 3.0, such as Burnout Paradise and Saints Row 2. So if anyone could let me know or possibly try it with 3.0 and give me some feedback on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks once again. Peace and later.
