Another Batman Depends On Gamer Response To Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the best games of 2009 and quite possibly the greatest superhero title ever...and yet, Rocksteady Studios doesn't want to count their chickens before they've hatched.

As soon as most people got their hands on Batman, they wanted to see a sequel by the very same talented studio that provided them with such a technically polished and completely fulfilling experience. So this question was given to the game's lead narrative designer, Paul Crocker, in the latest VG247 podcast. His reply was simple:

"We’re just waiting to see if people like the game."

Um...Paul? Have you checked around the 'Net? Were you in attendance when Arkham Asylum brought home the Guinness World Record for the most critically acclaimed superhero video game ever? Granted, you don't have the official sales numbers for the first month yet (it only just released on August 25) but do you really think it'll be a sales failure? It had almost nothing to compete against unless you feel like counting Madden NFL 10, which launched a few weeks earlier, or Raven Software's Wolfenstein. Both of those are good games, but Arkham Asylum has been getting all the press.

Okay, PSXE readers, tell Crocker and the rest of Rocksteady Studios that the game rules, and they should make another one. Or maybe they should stay in the superhero realm, but try another superhero...how about "Superman: Fortress of Solitude?" You know, a bunch of thugs find it and break in when Superman is sleeping, or something. Yeah, we're not game designers - obviously - but Rocksteady knows what they're doing so we'll leave it in their capable hands.

I'd prefer they stay w/Batman since superman's track record in games isn't as good :-P

They'd be taking a big risk but with high risk lies high payoffs i guess

Now to be fair after Rocksteady has gotten through with however many Batman games they are going to make, I think they should give 'the big blue boy-scout' a look over. I mean at least to get the taste of Superman 64 out of my mouth...gack.

Rocksteady has shown that they are fully committed to making a game as a good representation of the DC universe. So why not.

i would like to see these guys make an open-world batman game... where, you fly from rooftops like infamous but, drive around the in batmobile like GTA... listening to the police radio, going after his usual enemies to take em back to arkham...

*all car's respond to a break in at the gotham bank... two suspects on foot... one is believed to be the riddler...*

then you get there and he left a clue to start the mission that treks across the city... something like that :D...

Well i just beat it on Normal like 10 mins ago. I'll say this. 1. Save yourself the time and just play it on hard the first time around. you will be thanking yourself after you beat it. 2. the ending just makes it seem like they already have plans for another one.

i'm sorry but, any batman film, TV show, or game always gives you the feeling that there's more in store because, he never kills his enemies, and they always seem to break out of arkham lol...

it's a never ending loop in the batman universe :D...

yeah, i beat it on hard first because i didnt want to play through the story more than once to get all the trophies. i have all trophies for the game 100% complete. If you're after trophies, then spend time on practicing with the challenge maps. Shock and Awe extreme level is a pain in the ass because you have to get 30000 pts total all while killing each enemy in under 50 seconds for each round. It includes guys with knives, guns, stun sticks as well as normal guys.

Just finished on Normal and now playing Hard mode. I'm pretty pissed that the game will freeze everytime I try to collect the "interview tape" in the pumping room (possibly due to the firmware 3.0). ARGH, can't go for plat but I noticed some of the Riddler questions can't be backtracked so I'm glad I restarted the game again.

Best game I've played this year....

They can all be backtracked unless I got one on the first play through that isn't gettable later. Look for vents or breaky walls to get to a blocked area.

There are no riddles that you have to get at certain times only. They can all be found at any time. Some of the clues may sound like a certain condition must be met, but it isn't true.

Actually I kindof found 2 riddles that can't be backtracked. First is the riddle where the Jack Rider reports the news on the radio and you have to immediately investigate it to solve the riddle. It only happens once I believe. The other is in the pumping room (where I get the freezes), after going up the elevator shaft you end up in the main courtyard but there's no way of going back if you want to collect the remaining items there.

I got the one in the pumping room after I finished the game. As for the Jack Rider one, I got it when I went through, but I'm positive you can get it later. I got it after listening to the broadcast and after leaving the room for a bit.

I loved Arkham asylum, just put the next game in Gotham city w/ side quests and more boss fights, and make it longer. and get rid of challenge mode mandatory to get 100%, cause it makes the 100% seem like a platinum trophy(which it sorta is)

and maybe a co-op mode ala Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2...

i can dream can't i?

yea, i haven't played it either... but, if the numbers are correct, i think this is a silly topic to begin with... of course there's going to be a sequel!! developers these days don't let good selling games (even semi-decent selling games) go on without a sequel... if it makes money, might as well milk some more out of the concept...

i'm curious to see if there's other superhero franchises that call up eidos to see if they could revive their franchise lol...

You aren't a true Batman fan if you want to leave out Robin. I'm pretty pissed that none of them were in the game. They had every other citizen of Gotham for cryin' out loud. BTW, did you guys know that Dick Grayson (1st Robin/Nightwing) has been Batman for a few months now in the comics? Bruce Wayne has "died".

A sequel may burn the game... I mean where else are we going to have the same fear? The same intensity? There are many versions of gotham but arkham has always had a sense a fear whenever its name was uttered. Rocksteady can try but they won't strike gold twice I would love to see another batman game by them but maybe as DLC giving us different wings of arkham to explore with different prisoners to fight like the many mentioned in the character bios (^_^) that's my take on it. Anyone get me? Ben?

Seeing how well they did with the this game I trust rocksteady to do wonders with a sequel.
I do agree about having some awesome dlc single player campaign goodness. Mad hatter, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, Two face or whatever makes for the craziest boss battles.

Well hey they did a lot of talk about Blackgate prison! If anything that would make an interesting setting for some DLC campaigns for lesser villains or just a new enviorment, granted blackgate isn't as memorable as arkham it has still house just as many criminals since its conception in DC batman history.
