Two Separate Teams Working On Modern Warfare 2

You know Infinity Ward is behind the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but did you realize they have two dedicated teams working on two very different aspects of the production?

According to NowGamer, Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling says there have been two separate teams working on the multiplayer and single-player components. This has been the plan since development started, and Bowling added that they "love to defy expectations when it comes to the single-player story mode." Perhaps this is a trend we'll start seeing more of: studios split right down the middle so one side can deal exclusively with the single-player mode and the other can handle the multiplayer aspects. In the case of Modern Warfare 2, we imagine everything will rule about the game, but it may prove very helpful to have this two-team setup from the start. Furthermore, Bowling did want to praise other studios for their work in the first-person field, and that includes Valve and Left 4 Dead and Bethesda and the first-person RPG, Fallout 3. Said Bowling:

"Bethesda is really redefining the single-player first-person experience. Fallout 3 was a renaissance for single-player mentality and proved that multiplayer isn’t the end of great single-player experiences."

Developers really do take cues from one another on a consistent basis; certain advancements really catch their eye, and they're often appreciative of and impressed by the efforts of their colleagues. Fallout 3 is technically an RPG, but that doesn't mean Bethesda didn't use a lot of the same gameplay mechanics we find in FPSs. In fact, if this keeps up, maybe we'll have to get rid of the "FPS" category entirely and just call them "FPEs;" first-person experiences.

Then I hope the single-player campaign is longer this time around!

Unfortunately, if the comments made by the developers during announcement are to be believed, the single-player campaign is going to be around the same length.

And I find it funny that Bowling mentioned 'Fallout 3', since in the interview I read, he said he didn't see the need for single-player campaigns to be anything more than half a dozen hours or so (granted, it doesn't take long to complete 'Fallout 3' if you rush thru it, but still).

fallout 3 was no doubt amazing. i couldn't help but actually care for what i was doing. the humans tended to be a**holes so i didn't like them, but i actually did care. as MW2's biggest aspect is multiplayer, no doubt it will be astonishing, it was great, and they've just better'd it. It wont be immersive like fallout but it should pioneer online multiplayer. in the way Gears take on third person influenced others, this should do something for online multiplayer.

Honestly I wasn't too sold on Fallout 3. Not that it was a bad game, I just didn't enjoy it like everyone else did. I guess I just had too many show stopping bug encounters when it was first released. Ever since then, just can't get back into it.

I did, however, really enjoy Oblivion. That game still holds up to more recent releases.

Regardless of its short comings I loved Fallout3, it entertained me for hours and had endless hours of exploring and murdering to do it seemed like. Now as for 2 different teams working on the title, I expected that. But nothing that has been reported can get me excited about this game, yeah godslim I said it!

i thought it was going to be a dedicated ps3 dev team like cod4, interesting to see if the versions are similar or if one stands out over the other

I remember hearing that with the original Moder Warfare they had two seperate teams building the game, one for ps3 and the other for 360.

Really like what you said at the last part! Also, whichever way works to make MW2 bigger and most importantly, better.

Heck, if it's mostly the same, I don't mind ;)

I still feel like the biggest plus of the game will be it's multiplayer, and I'm just not much into that. So yeah, once again this is the sort of thing people will enjoy who enjoy this sort of thing.

CoD4 also have 2 team. 1 for SP 1 for MP. so i think MW2 will have the same short but great SP.

Absolutely hyped for MW2, and no doubt a day-one purchase for me, but the way IW/Activision rubs elbows with Microsoft still disturbs me... I mean, c'mon, timed exclusives for the first two map packs? Really?

I think Bowling somewhat explained it during a video on GameTrailers once, like about how the business decision works out anyway since the devs will most likely need a longer period of time (vs the 360) to test out the maps for PS3. But still, I thought we've gotten long past the point of staggered releases for the console at this point in its cycle :(

depends on what game it is.
COD4 is famous for its online not its SP mode.
without online call of duty would be nothing, same as halo.
the only game im really interested in and excited for from activision is singularity.
that looks quite unique and enticing, shame they had to delay it till march next year :(
