PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Slim Benefits Most From Price Cut

Wow...who says price isn't a primary obstacle for consumers in regards to new video game consoles?

In all honesty, we thought it'd be a closer race between "the games" and "the lower price tag" in regards to last week's poll question, but it wasn't even close: our readers say the most appealing aspect of the PS3 Slim is the cheaper price. With the advent of this new model, the default PS3 dropped $100 and droves of people have rewarded Sony for this savvy - albeit somewhat late - marketing move. Many of the hardcore gamers will be quick to say, "eh, it really is all about the games; who wants a console that doesn't have titles I want to play, no matter how cheap it is?" Well, that's a good point but in the end, the cost is always a consideration (unless you're wealthy). The PS3 Slim didn't shoot off the charts because everyone suddenly looked at the current and future exclusive lineup and went, "damn, what have I been missing?!" They might've said that after that new $299 price tag piqued their interest, but let's face it: it was the price cut that got 'em intrigued.

However, as a nod to those who maintain that it begins and ends with software, we'd like to give you an early opportunity to vote for your Game of the Year. Well, as the year is hardly complete, it's more of a prediction on your part; how will something like Killzone 2 stack up to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves? What game do you believe will earn the highest honors once 2009 is over? And we're not necessarily talking about the title that wins PSXE's GotY award; just what you think will be the best game of the year. :)

I first said it was the games. But then i relzed that not many peole were buy the ps3 even with the games. Ity was oviusly the price. But too late i had already said games.:(

Hell no. The majority of people can't even be asked to do a little research to look out on decent PS3 games. So many underrated games the PS3 has >=\

Im kinda tired of this reasoning, If you really want backwards compatibility just get a ps2. If you want a ps3 with backwards compatibility, you're a little too late. I believe sony told you that they were going to remove backwards compatibility when they started phasing out SKUs, and if you didnt bite then, you just missed out. Its either you want to get a ps3 or not, especially now that its 299. As an owner of both ps2 and ps3, because the ps3 has so much great games out right now and all through the holiday and spring 2010 season, i havent played my ps2 games other than playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with a bunch of friends (fighting games arent as fun online as they are locally). And that game is already on psn.

wow this arguement seriously need to die. who on this planet havent had a ps2 at one point or another?

majority of the gamers doesnt want to play ps2 games for the rest of their lives. sure its nice to pop in a classic ps2 game every once in a while. what does that have to do with the ps3?

lets not go with the "I would actually get one myself if it had PS2 b/c"
its like ur buying a ps3 to play ps2 games.

Sony offered ps3 with b/c. u didnt buy. so u have no one to blame but urself.

Yep, I originally bought me 60G PS3 for B/C. But to be honest I can count the amount of times I played a PS2 game on it on one hand.

The question also boils down to how much consumers are really willing to pay for B/C. That comes from understanding the technical reasons why B/C is not implemented in current SKUs.

I agree with DB. Although, I did take advantage of the b/c when GOW2 came out, SOC which I missed out on it in the previous generation, and the Metal Gears before playing MGS4. It's a matter of convenience for those who are still addicted to some ps2 games. I still have to play Ico, but other than that game, I don't see myself having much use left for b/c.

yea, to me, my personal game of the year 2009 will be Demon's Souls, nothing changes my mind in that list.

next year is a hard year, it is going to be between GOW3 and FF13, but The Last Guardian might have a seat too. Hardest to decide for 2010, can we nominate all three? lol

I dont know, i'm not completely sold on demon souls. I know that naughty dog makes great games and the Uncharted video game was amazing. So im gonna have to say Uncharted 2 is the game of the year. But now that game of the year doesnt mean crap right now with all these "Game of the Year" rereleases, its pointless. The only game that deserved game of the year was Littlebigplanet. Come on, all those awards and not to mention the actual gamers that like this game.

It's been all but announced by Sony. They 250g GT5 Slim Bundle was already leaked onto the net as it is. We'll know everything at TGS, most certainly.

Here(Malaysia) still doesn't have any PS3 slim, what's even worse is that stores here still sell 40GB model at a price of RM1499(my nation's currency, don't know how much that translate to USD though), 80GB at 1599 and 160GB at 1699 but no PS3 slim? WTF?!?!??!
What's even more **** is that all the storekeepers told me PS3 slim is even out yet which made me assumed that they don't even know what is World Wide Web.

And I don't have Gamestop, Best Buy all these which sucks big time.
Can someone give me a clue on what to do next!!!
Or Sony Styles is my last hope............

Well, IF it releases this year, I'm likely to find 'Gran Turismo 5' the highest-quality product of the year.
But if not, then 'Among Thieves' will likely be my top pick.

Also, looking at that list makes this year look a lot better than I had previously thought of it as (though 'Assassin's Creed II' is oddly missing from the poll).

But if Gran Turismo 5 comes out this year NO game, even Uncharted 2 will have a chance at all, period.

GT5 if it releases in December should just be considered for 2010

Well it all depends on how much you like driving sims.

As Godly as Kratos is and how awesome FFXIII might turn out in 2010, GT5 will very well be more than enough competition for them ^_^

But I believe we're getting it before Christmas.

This year is going to be a close race for GOTY.You couldn't go wrong with Uncharted 2 or GT5, Even Batman Arkham Asylum and KZ2 have a great shot at the title.ROTFL at the Halo 3: ODST choice; if that wins anything I'll quit this gen gaming and replace it with pong.

GotY... in all honesty, i cant say what it will be.
I have really high hopes for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and feel that it has a really great chance at achieving the title, as well as GT:5. And as much as i love Killzone 2 (Favorite shooter this generation), i dont feel like it has a chance because there are too many people who didnt like the game for its controls.

Though the reason i cant say is because of the fact that there are too many people who want Modern Warfare 2 and may possibly consider that to be GotY right off the bat...
That game - while i know it will be good - has a ridiculous amount of hype going for it, leading me to believe that it has the greatest chance by far.

I hope im wrong though... and hope it goes to a game much more deserving.

I agree with that killzone 2 comment, people just expect it to play like cod4, which is pretty stupid since its a completely different game. Its the first FPS game that i played where the squad and teamwork actually worked. If people actually judged games based on its own merit then Killzone 2 will be at the top. its like they are expecting games to adjust to the player when it should be the other way around. I have no problem with killzone 2 since everyone will have the same experience so theres no handicap. How lazy do you have to get?

What GoTY are we talking about, Spike's VGA or PSXExtremes, or our own personal ones? If we're talking about Spikes VGA then it will be Modern Warfare 2, psx's will be uncharted 2 and my person will be uncharted 2 =)

There isn't only one source of GOTY awards and the sources rarely agree. Even the movie business, where Oscar is king, has multiple awards for "MOTY". Every game that has released a GOTY edition has actually won at least one GOTY award from a reputable source, as far as I can recall. It's not like there's a Sonic Unleashed GOTY edition. Apologies to the long-suffering Sonic fans.

thats true, there are a lot of game of the year awards which makes it confusing. But labeling it simply as game of the year is just disrespectful to the game that actually deserves the title. They could at least put who called it game of the year, and have only 1 game to hold the title of game of the year.

I want to say either inFamous or Batman. It's a tough choice as I'm leaning more towards Batman but that may be because I've played it much more recently.

I don't want to start speculating on Uncharted 2 till after I've played it.

i would say its got more to do with the features offered by the system.
as sony so well put it "it only does everything"
shame it wont wash and wax my car for me ;)
as for goty simple uncharted 2.
nothing can take the title away from uncharted 2, even god of war 3 or splinter cell conviction would struggle against it.
for me gow3 would definitely win but some people dont like hack and slash games, for some reason.
assassins creed 2 should be runner up im really excited for that, they have changed all the mistakes of assassins creed 1.
O besides the stealth, your still running in killing everyone than leaving.
i thought assassins were like ninjas swooping in eliminating their target and leaving and no one ever knows you were there.
not jumping into the middle of the battle letting the whole world know your their.
your a assassin not a hitman.

If possible, please from now on make GOTY always a PS3 exclusive. I know it's extreme but it's what's right, PS3 exclusives always raise the standard of gaming from almost every aspect, and isn't that what GOTY winner is awarded for ?
This year it's KZ2 in FPS, UC2 in TPS, Demon's Souls in (J)RPG and hopefully GT5 in racing.

Wow looking at that list its been a pretty uninteresting year. I only have Street Fighter IV. but out of them i'm hoping Uncharted 2 would deserve it.

My personal choice though could be Tekken 6, I'd like to say that but i havent seen a one good new thing about the game from the media,the new additions to the gameplay and characters look rediculous. If Heavy Rain was released this year that would be a definate winner.

well.. i kind of go with the

'games are already there, but its just too expensive to buy a ps3'

argument.

so the price point was probably the leading factor for gamers in general to hold off on the ps3. but also a lot of people were probably 'purposely' waiting for a price drop.

i mean, price drop rumors after price drop rumors, of course a good percentage of gamers were probably waiting for one. especially back in april, when gamestop was getting calls all day long about a ps3 price drop but didnt happen. which clearly shows that people were waiting for that drop.

now there's a rumor about a 250gb ps3 slim. so are gamers going to wait again until further news comes out about a newer 250gb model? geez.. what the hell is going on with sony?

Sure the PS3 has the added benefit of free access to PSN, Blu-ray, Blu-tooth, Wi-Fi,web-browser, sata hard drive, etc, etc, etc & an incredibly strong lineup of exclusives to boot... but most average consumers only see the price tag on the box at the store.

The PS3 was priced well at $399, but unfortunately most people didn't understand that.

OK, well, belated from a marketing move, perhaps. But the price cut couldn't have happened without the nearly three years of cost cutting followed by the new slim model. The new 45nm Cell and 64nm RSX (45nm coming soon?) allows for a much more cost conscious design. Smaller heat sink, re-designed internals, less powerful PSU, and so on, and so forth. Sony could not have cut the price any earlier without absorbing yet more monetary loss, which would have crippled the PS3 project long term. Sony say they're still losing money on each one sold, but that loss is a mere fraction of what it used to be. As a platform, PS3 is profitable now, the sales of accessories and game royalties are outweighing the loss per unit, but Sony needs to build the market to boost the revenue from accessories and games.

The PS3 hardware should become profitable in it's own right next year - assuming Sony can achieve a little more integration and of course through the reduction in the cost of things such as the BD drive.

No, I haven't been able to find anything confirming RSX at 45nm, the best I could find is a confirmation of 56nm on RSX and reports that Sony's chip making facility that Toshiba purchased was gearing up for 45nm production of Cell and RSX. But that article was over a year old.

I would not be surprised if Batman wins this year. It is the highest rated super hero game ever made. It broke records in Guenness World Records.

Then again, with all the hype behind MW2, I would not rule it out either.

Tough call with so many great games this year. Glad I don't have to be the one to make that decision.

IMO the Ps3 was always appealing. Just because people couldn't manage to spend the 600 or 400 dollars at the time doesn't mean they didn't want a one.

most people that I know have wanted a PS3 since before it even came out xD! But after it finally released, they all started saying "PS3 is stupid. Only rich people can afford it."

I think it is psychological. People want a PS3 so bad that they hate it. They were so blind that they thought that getting an Xbox 360 would be cheaper. But they didn't consider reliability as a factor, nor did they consider the cost of Xbox Live after it builds up over the years.
