Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype Flies Onto PSN This Winter
Side-scrolling shooters were all the rage way back when, but don't think they've entirely disappeared from the industry. Last year's Soldner-X: Himmelssturmer is an example of side-scrolling shooting action combined with next-gen visuals and effects.
It launched on the PC back in December of 2007, then received a port to the PlayStation Network the following December. And now, thanks to what the publisher is calling "amazing feedback," the PSN will receive Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype. It'll be exclusive to Sony's online service and is slated to release during the upcoming winter with plenty of cool features. Seven levels will boast massive bosses, varying terrain (ranging from Underwater Worlds to Outer Space) will keep the presentation fresh, and everything will be shown in glorious 1080p high-definition. Fans of the original will also appreciate two new ships with their very own traits and weapon systems, new limit attacks and fourfold chaser system, and even "hidden bonus elements." This is one of those titles that will appeal to the old-school gamer in all of us, and if you've already played the original, you know what to expect. The fact that it's exclusive to the PSN is another feather in Sony's cap; it helps to have great digital exclusives now that more eyes are on the cheaper PS3.
We'll let you know when an official release date comes our way and in the meantime, we can't help but remember the good ol' days when "side-scrolling" pertained to just about every game on the shelf...

I still can't figure out why the 360 is getting exclusive shmups in Japan since these games don't usually release outside of Japan anymore and the 360 install base is miniscule compared to the Ps2 or Ps3 or (heck) Wii.
Anyway, looking forward to this.
