Guitar Hero 5 Rules UK Charts, Beatles: Rock Band In Top 5

Who says the music genre is slowing down? We still think Activision is going a little nutty with all these "Hero" installments, but even so, the fans of plastic instruments continue to step forward with pocketfuls of cash.

We'll be interested to see if the US charts are any different, but for now, it's enough to know that Guitar Hero 5 has topped the UK sales charts in its first week of availability. The competition, The Beatles: Rock Band, secured the #4 spot, which only proves that there's plenty of room in the marketplace for both music-based franchises. However, while the full packages for these games are indeed expensive, we expect the majority of fans only bought the game itself for the regular $60, as the instruments for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band are compatible with each new entry (er...we think). Other notable titles on the chart for last week include DiRT 2, which was second only to Guitar Hero 5, the stellar Batman: Arkham Asylum, which landed at #3, and the somewhat surprising IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, which occupied the #7 slot. But there's just no stopping the train that is Guitar Hero, and we doubt it'll perform any less admirably in North America. We'll have to see how Guitar Hero: Van Halen and DJ Hero perform a little later, though.

Have you picked up the new Guitar Hero yet? We say it's just another awesome effort, and the fans should be plenty happy.

They all seem the same to me. The last one I bought was world tour and I also just have 1 guitar.

Screw the drum set! Way to expensive!

Does the instrument play differently? It seems like the guitars are identical, not even a change in aesthetic design.

Something about the GH games just pales in comparison to the RB entries. That's just my opinion though.

Follow up: my housemate rented GH 5 today and as far as features go, it's a major improvement over the previous titles. The animations and general style need some work still but it's overall better than World Tour. I still prefer Rock Band due to style and the amount of available songs. That and they got the Beatles.

Its a solid opinion, RB has great animations and better music generally. The toy instruments look better and its more fun to play. RB has bad graphic and less innovation. The Euros love music, no surprise here?

Well not everyone is a Beatles fan. Of course we'd expect GH5 [containing a range of musical genres] to sell more. But of course the hugeness of The Beatle's popularity achieved the game's chart rank, even against a more popular franchise anyway.

And whaddya' mean "The Euros love music"??

A pet peeve of mine is when I meet people and they say "I like music. Are you into music?" WTF? Music, if anything, is compulsory. The real question these people should ask is: "What kind of music are you into?"

Personally, I would like to see Batman punch Guitar Hero and Bobby Kottick in the face.

O dear god, guys please stop buying this crap.
if they keep going the way they are were going to be up to GH 87 by next year.
and i actually loved GH1 and 3.
cowboys from hell and bark at the moon are the perfect titles for this game, followed by crazy train and anything from metallica.
O and how could i forget iron man

I know the guitars and microphones are cross compatible, but what about the drums? I have both Rock Band and Guitar Hero drumsets, but if only one works on all of em, I'd like to know.

Be handy for taking round to parties, save me taking both drum kits for both games, and those are really annoying to lug around!!

And yes, I might add I am a very big fan of Rock Band and Guitar Hero series.

Personally, Rock Band is the much better game with by far the superior DL content, but Guitar Hero 5 does look promising.
