Sony Seeking PS2 And Dreamcast Titles For PlayStation 3

The PS3's library continues to expand with every passing day, and the original titles and PS1 classics on the PlayStation Store add to the rising number. But what about the massive PS2 library...?

There have been rumors circulating ever since Sony pulled backwards compatibility for PS2 software out of the PS3, and now, a leaked document containing meeting notes between SCEA and Sega tells us PS2 games may return in a big way. The meeting was held back on August 5 and it featured Sega's comments on upcoming PS3 and PSP releases, as well as Sony's plans for their flagship console in the near future. What's most interesting is this: "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN." They even go so far as to mention Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which means it may not be much longer before you start seeing classic PS2 titles alongside the PS1 titles on the Store. They even talk about how Sony would market these games, with PS3 controllers shown in PS2 television ads. To drive up interest even further, it seems Sony and Sega might collaborate on another big project, and that would involve bringing Dreamcast games to the PS3. It appears that Sega needs to provide SCEA with a list of games that might be worthy re-release candidates, and Sony wants exclusivity, too.

There's no doubt that Sony has worked to position the PS3 as the ultimate home entertainment console and perhaps the only significant drawback of the new systems is the lack of PS2 b/c. This would help to alleviate that pain, and the inclusion of DC titles is a surprise. We'll have to keep a close eye on this; perhaps we'll hear more about it at Sony's TGS press conference in a few days.

Sounds like a great idea, I never bought a Dreamcast because I hated the controller. I would love to play Power Stone with a ps3 controller.

I actually had to sell my dreamcast because the controller was cramping up my hand to the point where I would wake up in the morning and my hand would be stuck in a certain position and it would take a few minutes before the cramp would subside. Never had that problem again after selling my dreamcast.

I think Sony has to provide some form of software emulation if it wants to sell PS2 games on PSN, so I would assume Sony would allow you to play PS2 discs if you own them and sell the downloads to you if you don't.

Orvisman - And as Sony has said, that is NOT going to happen ("unless they can perfect it" is the possibly unsaid portion of that declaration). People who are saying Sony has an ulterior motive here simply so they can re-sell 're-compiled' PS2 games via PSN have little clue what they are talking about.

Yet, it is my understanding that you need some kind of B/C to be able to play PS1 games off PSN; so I am assuming you'll need the same thing to play PS2 games off PSN.

Furthermore, it would be bad PR if Sony had a solution for B/C that only allowed the end user to play PS2 games off PSN and not his/her own PS2 discs.

I have a crap load of PS2 games already. I have no intention of filling up my HD and buying them again. If there's no PS2 disc BC, then they should let you download them for free by using some serial code from your old bought copies.......but that's a fat chance. Sony could easily do PS2 BC on the PS3, but they won't because there is a decent chance of making a few bucks by reselling their games to the Sony "juice" drinking fanboys. Why let people play their games for free why you can easily make a buck off of them again? Not as many people would buy and download Shadow Of The Colossus again if it were playable from their old PS2 disc. I hate purchasable DLC, full game or add-on.

yea, i have no intention of re-purchasing games i already own either... that was the draw to the b/c was we could re-play our favorite games on the PS3... selling them to me again is kind of a slap in the face... instead, i think i'll hook up my PS2 in the computer room to my SDTV because, PS2 games look very blurry in HD...

of course they're going to have b/c. they can't just give you ps2 games and only let the ps2 b/c ps3's play them. just because you downloaded them via psn doesn't mean they magically work, they have to have some type of software emulation unless they want to spent a crap load of money converting them to ps3 compatibility like they did with GoW

@ LegendaryWolfeh - Well yeah, but in the case of GoW Collection the "emulator" is built in. They could just keep doing that for each game and release them on PSN.

A real emulator that lets you play all your PS2 games on your PS3 would be MAJOR fan service by Sony. If they do it I promise to throw my 360 off my roof.

@LegendaryWolfeh - BC from a PS2 disc and BC from selling downloadable versions of PS2 games are 2 very different things for the PS3. If Sony decides to have both, then that's swell.......but that is not what this article is implying.

See wolf, I'm thinking that any emulator they are working in will only allow you to play digital copies of the PS2 or DC games. Just because the PS3 will be able to emulate DC software doesn't mean we can't pop in a DC format disc and play it.

What Ben doesn't report on is the March release date for the new motion controllers in Japan and the creation of an "Import Games" tab on PSN.

Now the latter tidbit and the news that Yakuza 3 is coming west might indicate Yakuza 3 might be the first import title coming to PSN in this new store.

For me it's not a necessity but it's nice to have the option. I don't want to have more then he current gen consoles connected to my TV. A PS3 and a Wii is enough. Don't want to have my Super Nintendo, Gamecube, PS2 and Dreamcast out there too I still play some of those old games. Nice to have a Playstation that can play all of the Playstation's titles spanning generations and a Nintendo console that allows me to play dated Nintendo titles. I don't see that as moving backwards. It actually an improvement in hardware that's made that possible. Seems to me that's moving forward. Given you avatar, I don't think you'll have any hesitation in playing God of War on PS3 right?

This sounds like a good is idea but I think many who want real backwards compatibilty are going to be irked by this. It's almost like Sony is saying, "you can continue using your outdated PS2 to play your PS2 games in crappy video quality or you can pay us again for the same game and play it on your PS3 in digital format".

But then again I can't say I wouldn't be tempted to buy a digital copy of FFX and XII.

Anyone know if the PSP's hardware is capable of PS2 emulation? How awesome would it be to be able to play FFX on your fancy PSP Go.

I bought several PS1 titles that I already own simply becuase I was lazy and the 5.99 mark didn't seem that bad. It's convenient not having to take out my old PS1 games and use their disks.

I equate it to owning a certain music cd but still burning a duplicate and using the duplicate so the original stays in perfect condition.

I'm sure the PS2 titles will be rather expensive so I doubt I will purchase any of them unless there is added content or the ability to play on my psp.

Agree with this comment 3 up, 1 down Disagree with this comment

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 @ 12:46:36 PM

With PS1 titles I don't mind so much because those are compatable with the PSP. its nice being able to take FFVII, MGS etc with me on my PSP. If PS2 compatabilty with the PSP never becomes a reality I don't see any benefit in paying Sony again for a digital copy that out weighs the cost. I do agree it's less of a hassle not having to keep your PS2 library along side your other games, or having to take them out anything you want to play them, I just don't know if the cost is worth it. Especially since the PS2 games will cost more then that 5.99 to 9.99 price point. I think this can work if Sony does it right.

I like your analogy to the cd burning. I guess though since I stopped burning CDs and now just rip them onto my iPod it's a bit different since I don't have to keep buying CDR's or pay the record company for a digital copy.

No, but the point of my remark was that I don't think Sony is thinking of remastering PS2 games at all like the above poster mentioned.

I still think (I've been saying this for awhile) Sony will offer some form of B/C via a software download, free or for a small fee ($5) off of the PSN.

They have the source code for PS2 games, which mainly just needs to be tweaked (minus direct hardware calls/subroutines) to be re-compiled for PS3 (16:9 720p/1080p instead of 4:3 480p with upgrading textures as an optional step).

Maybe they spent a few years making a good PS2-to-PS3 code 'converter' to make this process easier. It IS a simpler solution than having good software-only, real-time PS2 emulation.

@ Limited,

Because there is a multitude of PS3 owners asking for it, that's why.

Giving us (Not me because I have a launch 60G) B/C via a download or firmware update does not prevent Sony from selling PS2 games on PSN.

All PS3s have PS1 B/C but Sony still sells PS1 games on PSN.

And wasn't it you who stated you bought several PS1 games off PSN because the $5.99 price wasn't bad and it is more convenient than breaking out the PS2 disc.

If the average consumer has that mentality, Sony will still sell PS2 games off PSN even with B/C available at the console level.

Off topic, I'm considering buying a launch Japanese PS3 for B/C so I can retire my import PS2.

Orvis I reckon PS2 titles on the PSN will end up costing double what PS1 games are going for. The main advantage with buying PS1 games off the PSN is playing them on my PSP. I doubt that feature would be available with the PS2 games.

I wouldn't mind seeing the two Viewtiful Joe games getting the PS3 treatment or what another person said Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. As for Dreamcast I would like to see House of the Dead.

hezzron73 you have a contradiction. It's pretty obvious PS2 b/c was eliminated for the needed hard drive space and money. If Sony would had shed all that production money.. we would look at a PS3 with 80GB hard drive/PS2 b/c for $800 dollars

I hope this is true;Dreamcast is one of my favorite systems(Didn't mind the controller)and being able to play all those games that I spend countless hours on with a PS3 controller would be absolutely fantastic.

Awesomeest. Idea. Ever. I still have and play my Dreamcast but I'm with Camaro I'd love to see a reshine of Sword of the Berserk. Hell break out the old files and lengthen the game, give it a save feature and stuff. Awesomeness.

I don't see Sony offering any ps2 games via psn store until Sony finally puts the King to rest. The ps2 is pure profit for sony right now so until the ps3 becomes profitable to the point where Sony can sell the ps3 without a loss on the hardware, then that's when they can leave the ps2 and leave it up to the ps3 to start makng money. After Sony achieves that then I will believe that Sony plans on making ps2 games available via ps3. I for one hope this day comes soon because, I joined the party late in the ps2 life, so who knows how many great games I missed

Dreamcast games for Sony playstation does kinda surprise me because, wasn't Sony/playstation2 responsible for the death of the dreamcast?

I'd like to think of it as Sony's way of saying sorry for doing that to the Dreamcast, and another way of saying Thank You for making Valkryia Chronicles 1 and 2 exclusive to the PlayStation Brand.

Charger7302 - You're right, but where I am I certainly cannot buy the PS2 games I wish I could. Took me forever to find Persona 3! Sony's making money from PS2 yeah, but the store game stock is pretty slim.

Well, regardless, either way I'll still have my PS2; hooked up, using up electricity when it's not being used (I know, and it knows it loves it ^__^), and overall, will no go anywhere else for the years to come.

It changed the way I saw gaming. The way I played games.

Nothing can replace my PS2, no matter many systems with the name "PS" on it comes.

Note: Don't worry, I love all the PS systems out there, it's just the PS2 was a life changer to me.

there are some great IP's from the dreamcast days that would be perfect and certainly id luv a PS2 online collection. i sold all my PS2 games to fund PS3 purchase so id luv to be able to just head on the store and pick one up. Also he imports section is a cracking idea if its not just japan. imagine american games not available in europe. it would make it easy for us to get these games and vice versa. do import sections for the three main regions i say. but never the less if its true then we cant complain and if NPD's are now tracking digital downloads it could make some interesting reading against lives downloads?
at the end of the day though its just rumour at the moment but it would be epic it it turned out to be true as i havent read anyone denying the meeting, the notes or the link and SONY are pretty quick to quash these things.

Just a small thought, but I was relating this story to my wife (a keen gamer too) and mentioned the whole PS2, DC backwards compatibility and as I was telling her I had a thought.

The original Xbox used an Nvidia GPU, and furthermore it's an Nvidia GPU that Microsoft does NOT own. The CPU in the Xbox ran at a paltry 700MHz, I'm wondering whether a cell BE running at 3.2GHz might be able to emulate the Intel chip in the original Xbox because it seems very clear that the RSX ought to be able to provide near 100% compatibility with the original Nvidia GPU in the original Xbox.

I wwonder how hard it would be for Sony to emulate an original Xbox on the PS3? Given the hardware issues that the 360 faces with that emulation (incompatible ATI GPU that cannot emulate the original Nvidia chip) it's possible that the PS3 might even be capable of doing a better job of emulating the original Xbox than Microsoft can...

Just sayin'....

;)

Regarding the story itself - excellent....

Dreamcast BC? Wow, that in itself is worth buying the PS3. Shenmue 1 & 2 PLEASE!

I don't see how introducing PS2 downloadable on the PSN is a "slap-in-the-face" to all PS2 owners. First off, everyone wanted BC and this is the closest we can get. With all the PS3 titles out there, do you really believe you can have the time to replay and BUY every single PS2 game you own on the PSN? More importantly, a lot of PS3 owners have never played many of the great games PS2 had to offer, and for us this is a real treat.

I haven't played GOWII (scratch that, Collector's edition is coming), FFXII and many many other PS2 games because I was saving up for the PS3. Now these games are no longer available in my area/country so this is a real die-hard treat. (Not to mention extra usage for my 320GB HDD).

What WOULD piss me off however is that the digitally remastered GOW series in blu-ray are also in the form of a PS2 download in it's original form. If you're going to re-master the games, then don't put it on PSN.

In closing, these PS2 downloadables should be limited to "Greatest Hits" selection and not the entire library. However, if the game would be re-mastered then it should be added to the list.

Okay 1st question is "HOW WOULD THEY RUN ON THE PS3 WOITH OUT THE EMOTION ENGINE??" and i agree with one of the guys above that ps2 games should be released on disc like the god of war bundle remastered and on disc. EXAMPLE: GTA series, All the ps2 ones on one disc remasterd all for 60 bucks with like a little somthing speical. Gran Tursimo series on a Disc or 2 and a demo of gt5 or somehting like that. that's gunna get ps3 sales a good boost!!!!!!
