Sony Seeking PS2 And Dreamcast Titles For PlayStation 3
The PS3's library continues to expand with every passing day, and the original titles and PS1 classics on the PlayStation Store add to the rising number. But what about the massive PS2 library...?
There have been rumors circulating ever since Sony pulled backwards compatibility for PS2 software out of the PS3, and now, a leaked document containing meeting notes between SCEA and Sega tells us PS2 games may return in a big way. The meeting was held back on August 5 and it featured Sega's comments on upcoming PS3 and PSP releases, as well as Sony's plans for their flagship console in the near future. What's most interesting is this: "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN." They even go so far as to mention Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which means it may not be much longer before you start seeing classic PS2 titles alongside the PS1 titles on the Store. They even talk about how Sony would market these games, with PS3 controllers shown in PS2 television ads. To drive up interest even further, it seems Sony and Sega might collaborate on another big project, and that would involve bringing Dreamcast games to the PS3. It appears that Sega needs to provide SCEA with a list of games that might be worthy re-release candidates, and Sony wants exclusivity, too.
There's no doubt that Sony has worked to position the PS3 as the ultimate home entertainment console and perhaps the only significant drawback of the new systems is the lack of PS2 b/c. This would help to alleviate that pain, and the inclusion of DC titles is a surprise. We'll have to keep a close eye on this; perhaps we'll hear more about it at Sony's TGS press conference in a few days.

Furthermore, it would be bad PR if Sony had a solution for B/C that only allowed the end user to play PS2 games off PSN and not his/her own PS2 discs.

A real emulator that lets you play all your PS2 games on your PS3 would be MAJOR fan service by Sony. If they do it I promise to throw my 360 off my roof.

Now the latter tidbit and the news that Yakuza 3 is coming west might indicate Yakuza 3 might be the first import title coming to PSN in this new store.

But then again I can't say I wouldn't be tempted to buy a digital copy of FFX and XII.
Anyone know if the PSP's hardware is capable of PS2 emulation? How awesome would it be to be able to play FFX on your fancy PSP Go.

I equate it to owning a certain music cd but still burning a duplicate and using the duplicate so the original stays in perfect condition.
I'm sure the PS2 titles will be rather expensive so I doubt I will purchase any of them unless there is added content or the ability to play on my psp.

I like your analogy to the cd burning. I guess though since I stopped burning CDs and now just rip them onto my iPod it's a bit different since I don't have to keep buying CDR's or pay the record company for a digital copy.

I still think (I've been saying this for awhile) Sony will offer some form of B/C via a software download, free or for a small fee ($5) off of the PSN.

Maybe they spent a few years making a good PS2-to-PS3 code 'converter' to make this process easier. It IS a simpler solution than having good software-only, real-time PS2 emulation.

Because there is a multitude of PS3 owners asking for it, that's why.
Giving us (Not me because I have a launch 60G) B/C via a download or firmware update does not prevent Sony from selling PS2 games on PSN.
All PS3s have PS1 B/C but Sony still sells PS1 games on PSN.
And wasn't it you who stated you bought several PS1 games off PSN because the $5.99 price wasn't bad and it is more convenient than breaking out the PS2 disc.
If the average consumer has that mentality, Sony will still sell PS2 games off PSN even with B/C available at the console level.
Off topic, I'm considering buying a launch Japanese PS3 for B/C so I can retire my import PS2.

if you do throw your 360 off your roof can i watch a video of it happening? ;p
but yeah that would be pretty sick since one of the reasons are there are quite a bit of ps2 tittles i've missed and saving games on the ps3 is so much better(i worry how long my sony memory cards will last) and Grandia 2!!!!! comeon its the best on DC

It changed the way I saw gaming. The way I played games.
Nothing can replace my PS2, no matter many systems with the name "PS" on it comes.
Note: Don't worry, I love all the PS systems out there, it's just the PS2 was a life changer to me.

at the end of the day though its just rumour at the moment but it would be epic it it turned out to be true as i havent read anyone denying the meeting, the notes or the link and SONY are pretty quick to quash these things.

The original Xbox used an Nvidia GPU, and furthermore it's an Nvidia GPU that Microsoft does NOT own. The CPU in the Xbox ran at a paltry 700MHz, I'm wondering whether a cell BE running at 3.2GHz might be able to emulate the Intel chip in the original Xbox because it seems very clear that the RSX ought to be able to provide near 100% compatibility with the original Nvidia GPU in the original Xbox.
I wwonder how hard it would be for Sony to emulate an original Xbox on the PS3? Given the hardware issues that the 360 faces with that emulation (incompatible ATI GPU that cannot emulate the original Nvidia chip) it's possible that the PS3 might even be capable of doing a better job of emulating the original Xbox than Microsoft can...
Just sayin'....
;)
Regarding the story itself - excellent....

I don't see how introducing PS2 downloadable on the PSN is a "slap-in-the-face" to all PS2 owners. First off, everyone wanted BC and this is the closest we can get. With all the PS3 titles out there, do you really believe you can have the time to replay and BUY every single PS2 game you own on the PSN? More importantly, a lot of PS3 owners have never played many of the great games PS2 had to offer, and for us this is a real treat.
I haven't played GOWII (scratch that, Collector's edition is coming), FFXII and many many other PS2 games because I was saving up for the PS3. Now these games are no longer available in my area/country so this is a real die-hard treat. (Not to mention extra usage for my 320GB HDD).
What WOULD piss me off however is that the digitally remastered GOW series in blu-ray are also in the form of a PS2 download in it's original form. If you're going to re-master the games, then don't put it on PSN.
In closing, these PS2 downloadables should be limited to "Greatest Hits" selection and not the entire library. However, if the game would be re-mastered then it should be added to the list.
