TGS 09: Sony Talks 3D, "E-Motion"

You know how Sony has already presented certain games in full 3D, like Wipeout HD? And you know how they're working to revolutionize the motion-sensing aspect of games (see the EyePet)? Well, it's a major highlight of Sony's TGS press conference.

Hirai believes there's "considerable interest" in 3D gaming and furthermore, CG is "easiest and best for 3D," so people have definite expectations when it comes to games and all three dimensions. As for the motion controller, Hirai said we'll continue to see "more development" with the upcoming motion sensing technology; it will be an ever-evolving process, apparently (which isn't exactly surprising). Then he said:

"What I've always felt is that while you are playing a game, you feel a lot of emotions, it's not possible to reflect your emotions onto a game yet. I don't think we have realized the full potential just yet."

The more he talks, the more interesting the concept becomes. In fact, he says he wants to place the letter "e" in front of "motion" to get "e-motion;" it's Kaz's dream, as he reminds us that cameras can capture the emotions in our eyes and even our sweat. Of course, everything isn't "fully developed" just yet but they can talk about the future all they wish. There's no doubt that stuff like this will challenge Nintendo's stranglehold on the motion-sensing part of the industry, and Microsoft's Natal will have to stand up and deliver as well.

Moving on!

I am still curious as to how you would be able to play 3D games in a regular TV,Guess I'll wait and see.

To do 3D, the TVs have to do one of several things that ordinary TVs don't do. To be viewable in lightweight glasses, the TV has to be able to alter the polarity of the pixels line by line. Or you have to have a method that synchronizes shutters on a special pair of glasses that alternately block one eye and then the other as images from each viewpoint are displayed. There is yet another method that works without glasses, but it's more expensive, and not quire as effective. They all require the same thing from the video feed, so from the console's point of view, things should be relatively standard.

However, we will all need to get new TVs for it to work, except for a small number of folks who already purchased on of the high end screens that have 3D capability already.

I'm really excited about where this could head. I guess ever since playing the .Hack// games i've had the idea in my head of a 'true' 3D/VR style game which is where i think the whole idea of e-motion is headed. This 3D technology is a step in the right direction so far as i'm concerned provided they make good use of it. Not only that but we need the hefty price of those 3D capable TVs to go down a lot.

Man, I so used to dream about a 3D Mortal Kombat. Fighting Scorpion one on one is where it's at. Unrelated @Jawknee: On the hard drive switch, in what order should i do these in?: updates, restoring my data from backup, logging in to PSN. This is kinda confusing :( And are ALL my videos backed up? I have many that I've put on there from my computer. Oh yeah, what about PS2 and PS1 saves? Sorry, but once this is over I'll shut up. Should be getting the drive tomorrow. YAY!..........................You know, for some reason I don't think that 500GB is gonna be enough. I'll have that sucka filled up in a month. Watch me.

I don't think it matters, given that the firmware updates don't directly affect the HDD, but I would format, restore, update, and then sign-in. I think that's what I did. I also tried to partition my HDD, but since my original HDD wasn't partitioned, that didn't go so well vis-a-vis the backup file. I had removed most of the files before running the backup, though, and had nothing from the Video store, which I know is a concern for you. I don't remember anything being missing after the restore, including PS1 and PS2 saves.

I would strongly recommend copying any file you can, in addition to making the backup file. Better safe than sorry. And remember to sync your trophies before you switch the drives.

Maybe The Highlander has something better to add.

I hope he keeps in mind that people only play with technology for a little while. It's making that technology play fun games that will have lasting appeal to gamers.

the thing about the motion controller that sets it apart from natal and Wii is that not only can it be used in new IP's that maximise the usage but it can be applied to older franchises that people identify with.
Imagine one option on God of War three were you control kratos and ust the motion controllers for his swinging his blade weapons or say UFC and fight night,LBP, Killzone, Ratchet and clank, resistance, eyepet.all these franchises and many more could use the motion controller in different unique ways as an optional experience. this is why Wii is starting to fall in popularity is because nintendo are failing to release regular games consistantly and are relying on WII fit and Wii sports types of games. Ive yet to see a Wii game come out that maximises the Wii's motion and utilises it into gameplay where people see if go OMFG WTF that just wowed me.

I expected the motion controller to have the half of the dualshock in one and half of the other dualshock in the other. like a dualshock but cut in half so we wont have to use a separate controller like they demostrated resident evil 5. its really bad if we have to hold a dualshock in one and the motion controller in the other. rather have 2 motion controllers.
