TGS 09: GT5 Set For March, Massive Detail Unveiling

Okay, let's get the bad news out of the way: it has just been announced at Sony's second TGS press conference that Gran Turismo 5 will launch in March 2010, laying to rest the rampant rumors that it would release this year. They didn't specify if the date was worldwide - it's only confirmed for Japan - but for now, we're assuming March 2010 is the worldwide launch estimate. Polyphony boss Kazunori Yamauchi said this is to "achieve suitable scale and quality."

Now, on to the amazing stuff: first of all, you may have heard about the cross-compatibility with Gran Turismo PSP, and there's more information now. Not only can you transport your entire GT PSP collection over to GT5 (or if not the entire garage; most all of it), but Yamauchi also stated that if you play GT PSP, you can unlock GT5 cars even faster. And speaking of cars, there will be a grand total of around 950 in the total production, including 20 unique locations and over 70 racetracks. There's also the entirely revamped physics engine, the damage modeling, "movable objects on the track," and even the latest hybrid and electric cars. GT Mode will feature the World Map, My Garage, Car Dealer, Tuning Garage, Championship Race, and License Test while the online portion will boast the Open Lobby, Text/Voice Chat, Private Room, Online Photo Album, and - wait for it - the ability to export your replay videos directly to YouTube! To top it all off, Gran Turismo TV will boast improved UI, exporting of videos to the PSP, and progressive downloading. Is that enough for you? Are you now convinced it'll be the single biggest and most in-depth racing simulator ever? You should be.

It's too bad we have to wait until March, and it's unfortunate we'll have to buy two games that month (God of War III also launches during that time frame) but hey, more time to play the Q4 gems this year, right?

Saddened over the March news, but even more excited then before I read this. March 2010 can not come soon enough!!

I want news on the customization feature. I don't need a Forza depth livery system, but I would like to know if the plans for linking to real world manufacturing car parts and kits is still in the works.

Pretty sure I read something about GT5 almost 65% done and FFXIII 90% done. So basically, they took 4 years to get to 65% and they'll 6 months to finish the rest of 35%? It won't even be 6 months because I am pretty damn sure that they'll have to finish the job at least a month before the launch. How come the rest of the 35% left can be finished so quickly now?

Anyway, I am glad that they are taking even more time. A perfect GT is what we all expect and it seems that they are not going to compromise on anything!

I don't see why you're confused on that. Development is never run by linear times. The first parts is usually slower (due to learning process, etc.). You should also know the fact that PD had several other projects on hand in those 5 years. Now that they are concentrating on GT5 100%, 35% in six months is pie! Also if you look at GOD Of War III, it's at 60% and also to release in March 2010.

grr GT5 vs GoW3 puts me in a bind. Also, guess GT5 won't be GoTY now =\ because it's not coming out this year and if GoW3 ISN'T GoTY next year, I don't know what will be.

I too are tempted in purchasing this and that, but somethings will just not make it in my shopping bag so I have funds for other things, not least a healthy savings account for the grey days...

Dang this really sucks I was hoping it would come out this year. Oh well plenty of other games to play like UC2. Thank god my b-day is in march otherwise I wouldn't have any way to get some of the games I can't afford.

Untill they know nobody will be disappointed with the full game.

It's some fault of the racing guys who kept saying "we want damage on all cars, this sucks" and "this doesn't have that and <insert game> is better at this".

I don't have a problem with those people but now PD will probably want to take time to make GT5 better for them. Which isn't a problem but will just delay.

Well that's what I kind of think ;)

Very slightly disappointed though.

TheHighLander... as long as they want it to be in development... if you want the best racer in the world, on any platform, they need to take their time... similarly - as was done for Killzone 2; the polish on that game is very evident...

Folks, to be the best racing game on a platform, you have to actually launch the game, otherwise you're nothing but vapor.

At this point, I will believe it only when I see it. The March 2010 date is with regard to Japan, not the rest of the world.

I hope PSXE doesn't get as many hate comments as GTPlanet :(

I don't like it when people say they've had "enough of this GT crap". And they aren't interested anymore.

Were they ever a fan of the game? Or are some just trolling because they can use this unexpected release date to throw it against our faces and say PD sucks.

This is my silver lining:
Personally, now I finally know to buy Uncharted 2 for Christmas. Then GT5 and GOWIII.
No problems for me ^_^ It makes my choices so much easier haha.

Gran Turismo 5!!! Maybe a new Logitech wheel specially for GT5 will come out on March or Christmas.

All these features makes me want to slap my Forza (more like Gayza, lol jk) loving cousins in their M$ loving faces. So if those games have been in development for roughly 3 years, if the development studios were working at constant rate, that would mean we would have to wait about another 2 years until release. Since the release date is projected to be March, or in over 4 months rather than 2 years, this would mean they would have to work 6 times the man hours, or 1.5 months worth of work per business week. Overtime would be an understatement. They can take their time. We got plenty of great games to play in that time.

Those stats are basically wrong.

The release dates for both are March, and that's that...no way on earth GT5 is only "65% done." I'll wager it was that far along a year ago.

He's telling the truth, there was a list of games released before TGS and it had the progress in development of multiple games and GT5 was at 65% and Gow 3 is at 60%.

I wouldn't mind if it came out in April. But now that I think about it, GoW3 and GT5 will be a great 1-2 combo. If GT5 frustrates me...I came kill some stuff in GoW3. If I get stuck on a GoW3 puzzle, then I can switch gears to GT5 and knock out a circuit or two.

will this GT have the test track from top gear on it, cause I would love to race that one

aside from that the only other thing I would love to see in this GT is the ability to paint your car after you have bought or won it, I hate winning a rare car only to have it be pink

I thought GT5 this year was always wishful thinking, despite all the reliable confirmations of rumors of semi-educated guesses. ;-) There may have been some thinking of releasing it not-quite-complete to get it out ASAP and completing it via free updates over several months, but face it, it woulda gotten thrashed by reviewers if they had done something like that.

off main topic but car guys should love this. the car i am using as my avatar was actually remade by the airforce. check out the airforce website and they have a section where they took a new mustang and a new challenger and teamed up with some guys from pimp my ride. put some airforce tech into them and made them into some crazy cars.

6 more months? Really? I was sure it would be sooner. Oh well, I guess it's not a bad thing really. Just as long as the game gets better scores than it's PSP counterpart, I'm sure it will be worth the wait. I'll just have to keep occupied with Dirt 2, and perhads Shift, in the meantime.

Sometimes I think these guys just need a good kick in the butt. I'm not saying they should release the game before it's fully perfected, but good grief, they've been working on it for years. You would think they could schedule it to be completed in time for the Christmas shopping season. They're not only losing a lot of game sales, but PS3 sales as well.

Its all good, they just finished up Gran Turismo PSP so I figured it would be next year. Although I don't want to wait for the single greatest rally racing experience ever I'll except graphical and simulation excellence.

Since one of the game's producers basically said that they could launch any time they wanted (and that was a couple of months back at least), December 2009 seemed more than a little likely. It's something of a kick in the teeth to be waiting until at least March 2010 for the game.

Sidenote: hasn't there always been "movable items on the track", ie road cones. I wouldn't be surprised if that's all it turned out to be.
It's getting ridiculous how long this game has been in development.
Having said that I just say my first glimpse of forza 3 and I almost feel bad for all the xbots.
