Sony: PS3 Slim Hits One Million Sold In Only Three Weeks

When Sony dropped the price of the PlayStation 3 and introduced the new Slim model, everyone went ballistic. Plain and simple.

And yesterday, about an hour after Kaz Hirai completed his keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony sent out a press release detailing the immense success of the PS3 Slim. It has been announced that retail sales of the slimmer unit have reached 1 million units worldwide...and it only took three short weeks since the time of its inception. Of course, Sony was quick to add that hot new titles and the expansion of the PlayStation Network will continue to fuel sales, and Blu-Ray is a bigger draw than ever. But just to clarify, that 1 million milestone is based on SCEI's estimation, so we don't have any official numbers from all regions to reinforce the claim. But based on the stats we've seen from the NPD and both European and Japanese sources, it seems like a perfectly fair estimate. And although we won't be getting Gran Turismo 5 this year, there's always Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which is now in the driver's seat for Game of the Year.

If you know someone who has been hemming and hawing about a PS3 purchase, and they're still not totally convinced, grab 'em by the arm and bring 'em down to the store to buy a PS3 Slim. Just do it.

When Uncharted2 is released in US and Final Fantasy 13 is released in Japan , PS3 Slim will sell like Hotcakes.

To be completely honest, I don't really like the PS3 Slim.
I don't like the look of it.
I can no longer say "Ooooh, Shiny" as the PS3 slim case is dull looking.

Yeah, I understand that the new case will not show as many finger prints.
And the "It Only Does Everything" commercial is wrong! I can no longer use the PS3 as a mirror. :( :p

Eh, I didn't like the glossy finish just because it was impossible to keep clean. And it wasn't just dust; fingerprints and other smudges are there like forever the instant you touch it.

The PS3 Slim is just more practical. :)

the matte finish is ugly and to be honest i hate the buttons on it too. i like touch sensitive.
plus it requires the stand to stay upright

I like the look of my PS3's and I'd like to know why so many people complain about fingerprints and smudges on their consoles? I can't remember the last time that I physically touched either of them and I don't have any fingerprints, scratches or smudges. Why are people touching their units?

I didn't like the look of the Slim much either until I got one. The photos don't do it justice. After unboxing the Slim I was wowed at how sweet the thing looks. I still like the glossy piano black fat PS3 too but the matte finish is pretty much finger print and smug resistant. My 60gb is so dirty and covered in scratches. I can't remove them either.

I might be one of those rare cases of people who touch their ps3 alot. The reason is that some of my friends just got an apartment and are always having me bring my ps3 over.

@Jawknee - My 60GB looks brand new. It is always covered when not in use. I hardly need to touch it, it just stands next to my HD LCD screen proudly showing off its good looks... I never had to move it and I always keep its chrome bits polished...

Did you bash your PS3 around?

There's too many great exclusive games on the PS3.
I can't buy everyone of them!
Hmm.. Maybe I should switch to my XBOX 360? Since they only have 3 exclusive (good) games, while the PS3 has far to many!
I would save soo much more money with the XBOX!

Think about it, the PS3 has more than 10 great exclusive must buy games each year, while the XBOX 360 has less than 5.
I would end up saving money with the XBOX 360!
$59 a game, plus another $59 for Live, = 6 games.
PS3 - $59 a game x 10 = More Money.

See? The XBOX 360 is less money than the PS3 in the long run because you would buy less games.

I think the actual numbers will be more than 1 mil. Factor in the holiday rush and the possible bundle combinations (Uncharted 2, GT5, FFXIII) as well as a 250gb model in some areas and you will definitely see shortages in some areas.

Thats good Sony. Now stay on the grind. Drop the games and support them with strong marketing.

I need Demon's Souls commercials. I need 5 years olds and 45 years olds to now what Uncharted 2 is. And next year MAG, GoW3, and GT5 must stay in consumers faces.

Congrats to Sony for the estimated 1 million units sold of the newer PS3 "Slim" model thus far. I purchased one at Future Shop (with extended warranty) on the 26 of August.

I've been quite pleased and impressed with it overall. I was wondering however if anyone else has or knows someone who has experienced any hitches with the Wi-Fi? It can't seem to obtain the IP.

I'm really tempted to buy a ps3 slim but it does not seem practical to buy another ps3 if you already have one. Oh well. I'm just gonna upgrade the hdd of my ps3 and i'm gonna buy a wireless router so that i could play online.

uncharted 2 was allways in the driving seat.
nothing can take its place.
not GT5.
not R&C ACIT.
not heavy rain.
not god of war collection.
not MAG.
not GOW3.
NOTHING!
the only game that could give uncharted 2 a run for its money is syphon filter 5.

I understand that uncharted is an awesome title 1 was and 2 seems as if it will smash most anything but to say that God of War series can't is a large pill to swallow and I think your wrong on that comment.
