North Carolina Officer Not Off The Hook

For a while now, we've been bringing you the story of the North Carolina former sheriff's deputy involved in the shooting of an 18-year-old PS3 theft suspect. Christopher Long was indicted by a grand jury on the second-degree murder charge regarding the December 1 death of Peyton Strickland. But a few days ago, we learned the grand jury foreman had checked the wrong box, accidentally proclaiming Long guilty, thus causing the case to be dismissed.

But it's not over. Today, the Associated Press has revealed that prosecutors are still pursuing the case despite that dismissal. Therefore, the investigation - apparently - will continue for now, so Long isn't out of the woods yet.

He claims he mistook the sound of a battering ram striking the front door as gunshots, and proceeded to fire his weapon into the residence. Strickland died from a shot that ricocheted off an object inside the house and lodged inside his skull; his roommate claims he was unarmed at the time.
