Will Sony Port All PS2 GTAs To PS3?

We may not be getting backwards compatibility, but Sony hardly wishes to leave the glory days of the PS2 behind.

Not only do we have the God of War Collection coming, but a recent leakage of documents outlining the content of a meeting between SCEA and Sega have hinted at the return of many PS2 titles on the PSN and on top of which, other developers may give their classic last-gen titles a high-def makeover. Now, we get to bring Grand Theft Auto into the mix... According to PS-Insider, Sony and Rockstar have been in talks regarding some sort of exclusivity deal, but it's not about a new project; it's about the old GTAs. It seems they want to bring back the likes of GTAIII, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas, complete with the updated visuals the GoW franchise has received. This isn't really a series that requires stunning visuals to succeed but we won't balk at the possibility of a high-def Tommy Vercetti. Furthermore, wouldn't it be sweet if the PS3 could play every last GTA ever made since the release of GTAIII way back in 2001? All these remakes would be a great way of paying homage to last-gen classics, all the while upping the current library of the PS3.

We might hear more about this before the end of the year; there are no more major shows scheduled, so such an announcement might just pop up out of the blue. We'll have to wait and see.

This would be awesome. I would buy these for sure. It's been a while since I've gone gone through any of the GTA's and this would be the perfect reason to go back and do them again.

IMO one of the best gaming series of all time. Its a pity Rockstar gave M$ the exclusive GTA IV DLCs.

It would be great if they did, but it sure seems like it would be considerably more work than the 'God of War Collection' or an 'Ico Collection.' So I could forgive them if they didn't. Never bad to hope, though.

Yeah, I think the return of BC would be welcome by many as well. However if they are upgraded, I think I would prefer to get these on disc like I would with the GoW Collection. I do already have them on PS2 DVD Rom discs, but I would definetly consider getting them for the PS3 and probably sell/give away the PS2 versions.

I agree with Hanz64, this way Sony have us repurchase the games we already have lying around the house. I'd prefer to be able to play them instead of a double purchase.

Meh, never understood the hype behind this franchise. I fell for the perfect scores GTAIV recieved. I should have continued listening to my gut. Wasted $30.

I have all the GTA's and on my HDTV the earlier ones do sorta look outta place graphically. But I doubt I would buy them from the shop anyway. I don't like online downloads as they take up precious hard drive space as it is and getting them back if your hard drive crashes can be a bit of a pain etc. I prefer physical hard copies in my hand/collection.

Now unless they come on disk then I would consider buying them again as a high def deal like the God Of War Collection I am gonna do that.

I put so many hours into those games years ago, I don't know if I wanna go back to it. lol.

I'm looking forward to what they have in store for GTA V. Now that they have the framework for a larger scale world, they just need to fill it in with sidegames and challenges that are actually fun and engrossing. There's only so many time I can bullseye darts before that gets old.

Though stumbling around drunk never gets old! lol

I would love for this to happen for the GTA franchise, strong consideration to purchase atleast for san andreas best in the franchise, even the though I could just throw in my original one which I do from time to time.

I hate the idea of having to pay the full game price twice for a game that I already own (a good discount scheme on proof of previous purchase would be a nice touch by Sony), but this is great news for people who have never played any of the older GTA's.

It might not be that hard a job for them as they could lift the textures from the PC version (yes I know it is not just as easy as that!).

Yes I agree Streets, SA is the best of them, and sadly IV is the worst of them. Also Vice City is a true gem that imo deserves to be bought twice. :)

i personally would be looking forward to this one... i am not on board with having to re-purchase PS2 games but, if they update them like they will with god of war then, i will purchase them indeed... maybe R* will implement a trophy system for each title... that would make it worth the purchase for sure...

i wouldn't mind re-playing these games to 100% again, if it had trophies :D...

While it is true that some games deserve the high def remake, this is not one of them. Let's just leave them in the past where we can still think of them fondly instead of dragging out those horrific remote control helicopter missions in hd and ruin our nostalgia.

Yeah a MGS collection akin to the GoW collection would be great. Maybe we'll be seeing more of these, as it's likely GoW:C will fare very well. I was also thinking that perhaps the DMC/PoP/etc franchises could receive this as well as some other popular/Greatest Hits titles.

The MGS series is fine the way it is. If any remake is to be made it should be a complete remake of MGS using the MGS4 engine.

i own a 80 gig with b/c and own 2, 3, vice city, san adreas, and IV. i would still buy this just to play those in hi def. i am worried they would change something. if its the same game ok, though i did hate that water would kill you until san adreas. so maybe they can change that ;)

I would drive towards cliffs and dive out of the car, but yeah it would be fun not having that restriction. But would the PS2 GTA cheats work on the PS3 versions? and upgrade the weapons and add some special vehicles.

Sounds awesome, but I already have a copy of each (III and VC on PC and SA on PS2) so I don't think I'll be buying this. Perhaps at a cheaper price.

if Sony can seal the deal on exclusivity this will be huge for Sony and the PS3.

The PS3 has already proven itself in 2009 and it will definitely own 2010 with all the exclusives coming out. But if they keep adding the PS2 classix to the mix it will just give the PS3 even more momentum and truly make it an unstoppable force....
