Uncharted 2: The Highest Rated Game Of The Generation?
As if you needed any reminding, the PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is receiving some lofty review scores from critics worldwide, and as the analysis continues to be glowing, we're starting to wonder: will it become the highest rated game of the generation?
It's well on its way. As of right now, it's averaging 96.43% according to GameRankings, and that is currently counting 7 reviews. To add to those, most recently we've seen a 5/5 from G4TV, a 9.6 from Vandal Online, a 93 from Videogamezone, and a 95 from JeuxVideo. In comparison to the best of the best this generation, Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3 owns the top spot (and is actually the second-highest rated game of all time behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) with an average review score of 97.31% and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii is at 97.28%. But beyond that, nothing can quite reach Uncharted 2 right now, including Bioshock (94.99%), LittleBigPlanet (94.50%), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (94.17%), Gears of War (93.88%), and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (93.14%). Obviously, we've got a long ways to go - our review is still to come, for instance - but Naughty Dog's sequel is definitely off to a fast start. If this isn't enough to convince you to be a PS3 owner at this point in time...well, nothing will.
Where will Uncharted 2 end up on the overall rankings? We're not entirely sure, but we feel confident in saying it's easily one of the best video game productions in history.

However, seeeing how I'd only got into the first bera in June I'm just so glad to be back playing the game again-it's amazing and the reviews have all been just as good so far-even Eurogamer! Lets just see what comedy score Edge gives it bwefore we start slapping ND too hard on the back though-even if what we already have seen looks to deserve every last 10/10.
Finally a game that might rival MGS4 as best this gen for me! Uncharted was already the best new IP this generation, imo better than Gears by some good distance(and I love Gears)and to improve upon it so much in such a short time is a great effort. Literally can't wait to get stuck into the SP!

Anyway... Review scores aren't EVERYTHING but just from playing the beta, this game surely deserves high marks.

Even Eurogamer who like to give 7 like Edge do, gave it 10/10, so any other site claiming otherwise need to lay off whatever they been drinking or smoking.
I'm expecting a 10 from PSX or 9.8 the least ;)

For the time being, I'm looking foward to Uncharted 2, R&C:ACIT (more or less in the same rank), GT5, and then GOW3.

They take into account too many non credible sources but, regardless of what some paid to bash websites might score it, U2 is gonna be a 10 out of 10 for me :)
Oh no wait! make that a 11 out of 10! LOL

its boring as bat sh*t.
half the missions your a fuc**ng taxi driver, the other half your backpeadeling fixing either you cuz or friends problems.
thats the problem with GTAIV you feel like a kabana boy.
doing peoples dirty work, i want to work for myself and do what i want to to help me.
like the whole point of you coming to america was to find that guy who screwed you in the army.
and theres like 3 missions based on that.
GTA vice city is the best of the series followed by san andreas.
take the mission and area types of VC add the gameplay like upgradable weapons gang wars flying planes hellis of SA and you got a perfect GTA game.
GTAIV is THE! most overrated game ever.
followed by halo 3 and ODST

GTAIV did not deserver all those great review scores. If anything San Andreas should be the one to be getting it.
The reason why the average is so low is thanks to gamereactor......
And here I thought Eurogamer will be included but I won't leave out EDGE.

And I have to admit, I am surprised that Halo doesn't feature on the Xbox list of games. Really though, Bioshock and Gears of War?
I'm not sure that I'd really agree with best game of all time rankings that are based of aggregate review scores. Standards have changed - even during this generation of games. Not to mention numerical oddities like the mostrously high scores that some are donating to Bungie and Microsoft for Halo3 ODLC...oops, I mean ODST.
Ah well, Uncharted 2 probably deserves to be listed as one of the best games of all time, until I see it myself, I'll leave Uncharted 1 on that list (actually it should probably remain on the list since it's the first of them).
Deciding the best games ever is like asking how long is a piece of string. It's such a subjective question.

Mario is the same as it's been for more than a decade and that stinks - almost as much as the game itself. If there was never another Mario game (or character spin off) it would be too soon!

I don't hate Mario, I hate the 'Mario Machine' that Nintendo has become. MArio would benefit from some time off, and some fresh blood on the team.

I'm not saying it's my FAVORITE; the atmosphere has almost always dictated whether or not someone will like a GTA. Some people didn't like this new setting, and I understand that; my personal fav is Vice City because I'm an '80s fan. But personal opinions ASIDE, there was almost nothing wrong with GTAIV. The reviews are that way for a reason, I promise.

It's not the game's fault, the graphics are great, the sound is great, the controls are smooth.
However, here is the thing. I don't play a lot of multi-player shooters whether first or third person. It's not that I'm no good - I racked up a spree of 6 consecutive kills out of pure revenge last night in Uncharted 2. But, the multi-player game is just like every other multi-player shooter out there. You get the same assortment of morons. Those who played in the earlier beta or in the closed beta already have a leg up. The mnatch making doesn't exactly help out. One of the matches I was in last night put 4 players all level 4 or less (aka newbs) against a team of 5 with an average level of 15, one of the 5 was level 39. Guess how long to took for the 39 level d-bag to start with the cheap kills on the 'fresh meat'. Not even as long as it took to read the sentence I wrote about it.
So the usual problem of what can only be described as cyber-bullying in a game was out in full force. As was the verbal diarrhea, the first thing I did in the game (while getting killed) was find out how to mute the players. there's only so much trash talk I can take, and when it's just random abuse and BS, I have zero tolerance for it.
But I kept at it, as I wanted to see whether it was worth anything, and in the end I am not sure it is. I tried the co-op game, but since it wa an open game and no one was talking, it became a free-for-all. An elimination game lasted all of 30 seconds as someone who knew the map way better than me did an end run and killed me and another of my team before we even had figured out where the hell we were.
And you know, it's just not that much fun being killed over and over in a game like this and being abused by the d-bags doing it. So for me, the multi-player is going to be something I will give a complete miss on. I hope to hell that NG didn't spend an inordinate amount of time working on it. Uncharted was a single player game, and a damn good one. Uncharted 2 should be as well. I'm sad that NG felt they had to give in to the multi-player deathmatch fad. In a way it relegates Uncharted to being just another multi-player online shooter. Yawn.
When it comes to Uncharted 3, I hope that NG realize that the core of the game is still the single player campaign. In fact, I would prefer to see most games developed as single player games in their own right, with multi-player being separately developed as an add on product for those that want it.
Either way, unless someone comes up with a miracle cure for the population of d-bags in online games, Uncharted 2's multi-player will be mostly un-used.
Like I said at the beginning, it's not the game's fault. It's the standard problems that multi-player online shooters always suffer. I shouldn't have expected any better.

Personally, I think they only made the multiplayer just because it's basically a requirement for blockbusters these days. Deep down in a place they won't reveal to the press, I get this feeling that Naughty Dog almost wanted to avoid online multiplayer entirely.
I know I won't be going online to play it very often, if at all.

I'm not forgetting the single player game at all, in fact that's where my emphasis is. But this constant dribble of multi-player beta/demo versions is all focused on multi-player.
I'll be getting my copy through the mail on launch day and that's that.
@WWW
If any reviewer knocks off a significant portion of score due to the omission of online play, they deserve to get their butt kicked.
@Alienage
No, I doubt it. Multi-player shooters aren't my cup of tea at the best of times, but I have had this exact same experience on numerous online games, some shooters some not. Verbal abuse, cheap tactics and game exploits learned through dozens of hours of repetition are not pleasant to be on the receiving end of. As for changing the party, you can't cherry pick opponents and allies forever. The flaws I mentioned are pretty universal to multi-player online gaming. This is one of the reasons I am so against the whole idea of including online multi-player modes in games, it's such a waste of resource that could easily go into the main game.
There are some games where online play works, and there are some where it doesn't. I think it's time to reign in the desire to make every game multi-player online. Regardless of the style of play, the verbal abuse is intolerable as well. Quite why everyone is so interested in cross game chat is a mystery since the in-game chat is generally crap already.
@Hexen
We appear to share a common view on this. Perhaps once the game lands, if you want to work on any co-op objectives (the ones that don't involve merely obliterating eachother or the opposing team), we could work together with a few other like minded players on co-op missions?

When I started it was with everyone else but there were also D-Bags talking crap and trying to ruin my fun, so naturally I just got in there and shut them down. That's the perfect way to shut them up, I always tell everyone good game afterward if I get destroyed. You have to maintain a certain level of dignity for the fellow players and have FUN. Above none else I really enjoy the CO-OP.
I had similar issues on the 1st Beta when I was just trying to learn the maps and find good spots and weapons, I was becoming quite frustrated but soon enough I got the hang of it and started holding my own. Just get in there and don't give up! Climb, Dive, Roll!
Sorry if you had to deal with too many losers highlander. People can get competitive but when it gets to a negative level it ruins it for everyone.
TheHighlander
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 @ 11:17:41 AM
You're right about people getting competitive and it becoming negative. Open matches become unplayable very quickly as more players learn the cheap kill tactics. Why not just arm everyone with RPG launchers or automatic shotguns? Single shot kills anyone?
I played Uncharted through on every difficulty level including Crushing and have my shiny platinum trophy for it. All 1000 points for in-game rewards too. So it's not like I am a push over. But when playing a game makes me mad enough to be actually angry, or actually aggressive, it's time to put down the controller, hug my wife and do something else.

I know the reviews were great, because the game obviously rocked. There were certain things about the game at first that really captivated me, for instance the amount detail in the city was just astounding. The graphics themselves were pretty great as well, and the frame-rate was solid(which I'm pretty crazy about). All GTA games are fun, but after so much time with them you just loose the urge to keep at it.
I held GTA IV up on pretty high expectations and at 1st it lived up to them but not fully. For the most part I thought a lot of the missions were just awful, ones from GTA III were a blast, and vice city so why not in the newest game? Pretty much all aspects of the game were great, it is a solid game. But it's missing something, what? I have to ponder on that, but what I do know is they need to take more risks with the franchise, expand further and show me a whole new GTA that I could have never expected!
Right after they show some MAX PAYNE 3 game-play, and more info.

1- Babysitting "friends". Every mention I've ever heard of the girlfriends in SA was about how hated the mechanic was, it doesn't feel like you're bonding since they're so repetitious, so why in the hell did they make half the characters "girlfriends"?
2- There's very little to do outside of the story, which was quite underwhelming in itself, besides hang out with your "friends" and go on rampages, which end a lot faster now. No cheats, no tanks, no parachuting, no territory, but whoopy theres a crappy tetris knockoff, bowling, and darts. If I was that easily amused I'd be one of the many standing in line to play that kinda crud in Home.
If Saints Row 2 had gta 4's graphics and physics than that would be a game at least possibly worthy of such high reviews.
Obviously it has a wonderfully built up city but it astounds me that anyone could say it has nothing wrong with it. I've gone back to all the other gta's so many times but despite all it's flash there's nothing in 4 to ever make you want to pick it back up.
And I'm a fellow advocate against online gaming. I pretty much never go online, any game with fun multiplayer is much better done local but it's a complete shame how many developers aren't bothering to put in that option anymore.

Its very rare for a beta demo to include such a good multiplayer option and uncharted 2 beats Call of Duty hands down. They deserve freaking medals for this alone. I don't normally recommend buying games on day 1 but in this case I would make an exception.
