Rumor: Sony's Motion Sensing Tech Called "Sphere"
In the world of marketing and advertising, you need a recognizable and attractive name that sticks out in a crowd. ...and "PlayStation Motion Control" doesn't cut it.
The competition doesn't have a finalized title, either, but Microsoft's new motion sensing technology is widely known as "Project Natal," and it seems clear - at least from a promotional standpoint - that Sony needs to pick a name for their nifty new tech. Well, perhaps it's "Sphere." As noted by Joystiq, the name has popped up here and there in the past few weeks; Sega producer Yasuhito Baba and his translator labeled the controller as "Sphere" during a TGS interview. Furthermore, when asked if Gran Turismo 5 would support the "Sphere" peripheral, Polyphony's Kazunori Yamauchi responded as if he knew what they were referring to. For the time being, Sony representatives are remaining quiet on the matter, but perhaps they wish to unveil the name at a certain event. Something like this will need a title that is both easy to recognize and easy to remember, and maybe "Sphere" fits the bill...but if you don't agree, what ideas might you have?
There are many possibilities here, and we have to remember that "Sphere" could only be a code name for the technology, like Natal. Who knows what we might be calling it by the time it launches in the spring?

The PS3 is trying so hard to find new ways of game interaction. Thus, this "sphere" project will be a BINGO! However they are leaving out the straight-oriented population. I guess we will have to start experimenting new things :P

-Or the EyeControl / EyeMote. The thing does look like an eyeball planted on a tower [and is fitting with the PS Eye title of course]. Could be the future design of lighthouses. Hmm.

I'd have to stop and think for a while to come up with one myself that fits, but I'm not getting paid by Sony either.

Seriously, why just the prototype of the "Sphere/wands"? If they really do intend to go with the DS3 used in one hand(which my kids just couldn't do-and I've made the little debils try it out!)as the answer hoping the cheap soluition will help them they're very, very wrong when even the Wii has a proper second peripheral-just the professionally designed way the casuals(and anyone with a brain) would like it.
Honestly, despite having agiggle over some of the suggestions I can't get over the fact that I fear this is totally doomed unless a nunchuck equivalent is found/made/developed and the fact there's nothing spoken of, nothing at p'type stage despite press calls for answers makes me think there really isn't anything coming.
This could screw Sony really badly(no joke intended!)!

Why not just go for the obvious? The thing has a glowing ball on top of it. The fella in the picture is holding two controllers.
We already have the PSEye, so why not the PSBall? If of course if there is more than one controller, the plural of that name might be more applicable.

probably would sell better too ;)
nah jokes.
but i really hope they dont make this thing mandatory.
make kid games for it thats fine, make it optional for all games thats fine.
but i really hope they dont start making normal games forcing you to use the motion controller.
games like resi 5 thats fine because we have our normal edition, but if we were forced to play it using the motion controls i would be mighty pissed!
if i wanted motion controlls i would of bought a wii not a ps3.
