Sony Has Put Pressure On Polyphony To Release GT5

There is often a great deal of pushing and pulling going on between developers and publishers when it comes to releasing high-profile titles, and as far as exclusive titles go, they don't get much more "high-profile" than Gran Turismo 5.

Not surprisingly, a recent Meristation interview with Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi, as reported by GameZine, shows that Sony has been putting significant pressure on the designers to get GT5 out the door. The game has been in development for over five years and while we've received large demos in the form of Gran Turismo HD and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Sony still wants the final product in stores...badly. Many rumors indicated a possible 2009 release but as it turned out, the hotly anticipated racer was announced for March 2010 in Japan; US and European regions are expected to get it not long after. In the end, Yamauchi called the pressure "unbearable:"

"Not in terms of content, but the pressure really, if we can call it that, of the delivery dates are sometimes difficult to bear."

Yamauchi goes on to say how he sees his team at Polyphony as a close family, but at the same time, he wants to satisfy Sony as he has made many close friends there as well. It's these professional relationships that clearly have an impact on Yamauchi, and if we were to hazard a guess, we'd say he was caught between both sides: on the one hand, Sony is essentially begging him to finish the game, but on the other hand, Yamauchi doesn't want to push his team too hard. For our part, we're okay with March; we're just a little disappointed it didn't make it out this year.

They can take all the time in the world just as long as the game hits on March(in US & Euro).

What? I'm confused.
Didn't someone say that it was basically done a few months back and they could release it at any time? How is almost a half a year out, from a five year in development, release date hard to bear?

I think the news before was that it was finished enough for A release, but wouldn't have quite all the tracks/cars and, especially, collision damage modeling. If they released a seen-as-incomplete title, it would get slammed like mad by reviewers.

5 years...this game better deliver the goods, then again Forza 3 looks like it was only in development for 5 months...

It should deliver the goods... but until you really play it you never know... I hope for one the damage modeling is realistic and it does feel like it should. I am still waiting for the ultimate Formula 1 simulator...

ROTFLMAO. Saying Sony put pressure on Polyphony to release GT5 soon is like saying the sun will come up in the morning.

Lol @ highlander

But it's interesting because from other developer points of view Sony is generally easy to work with and understanding and such, but I guess even they have a time limit at some point, haha

Yeah, they don't like it if your game takes more than one generation of console to arrive...

read the full article on gtplanet .net. Can't put link since I'm on my PSP right posting, but I'll add a link later on in a reply.

After reading it you will come out with a huge appreciation for Kaz and PD, and will understand better the reason why its taking so long. The interview is long but worth it.

Oh, look in the comments section as I had posted there as well revealing how I how about their hard work.

Kaz also talks about GT PSP and how they used car renders from GT5 for the game play and stuff.

What I understand they built their entire game from scratch to compete in future quality demands. That being said its like having Epic create the Unreal Engine then start Gears right after. Thats hard work Im sure.

I don't want 5 years dedication to end up gimped...take another 6 months to a year...we'll be here, unless Swine Flu wipes the world away.

for once im glad a game got delayed.
i dont have enough time to play the games i want to at the moment.
this weeks NGS2, next is uncahrted 2 and opp flashpoint, than borderlands, than R&C on november 5th, than MW2,than AC2 on november 19th,than the sabotuer on december 4th.
actually come to think of it, im glad every game that got a delay did.
im happy they got delayed.
O besides max payne 3,bioshock 2 and splinter cell conviction.
that one really hurt, im still mending the hole left from that one, and will be for some time.

Seriously though.........
What could be taking them so long????

Even Killzone 2 and MGS4 didn't took this long being a PS3 exclusive........

At least they're better than Capcom......
Only one canonical RE series showed up in the 6th gen........and we get 60% of the same thing years later... What the ****?

People demanded vehicle damage and Kazunori is sort of a perfectionist. So...

^_^

And KZ2 did take quite a long time too.

Well.....at least KZ2 made it in EARLY 2009.
But for video games.....the longer it takes the higher the expectations get so I'm one of the many people don't want to get disappointed.

I'm all for taking whatever time is needed to finish a game, but good grief, it's been 5 years. You have to produce a product eventually. This was supposed to be the big Christmas release for Playstation - hundreds of millions of dollars will be lost by Sony because this guy can't meet a scheduled release date with half a freakin' decade to prepare for it.

I mean c'mon, 5 years? It's just silly now.

It's got me a bit worried I have to say. I hope it'll be even close to expectations. Prolouge was fun, and granted PD has had time to work on it since, but I thought it was marred with aliasing, screen tearing and other graphical issues.

If their taking this long with it, then something is up. I was over at the best buy this weekend and they had Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on display, and i have to day it did not look that good. The way I see it is the more time they take the better the game will be but home much time is to much time?

Did anyone go to GTPlanet and read the interview. If you read you will read that they're working their asses off to give us the ultimate product and so far all I'm reading are comments of people complaining and saying it better be worth it.

Just read the interview and you will not be disapointed by the hard work. Hell, NASCAR vehicles are getting full damage like rollovers and well if you've ever seen a NASCAR race you know how crazy the crashes are.

Sure did. It was good one too.

Speaking of all things GT, if you have a PSP, do yourself a favor, and pick up GT PSP.

This game is amazing, a 9/10 in my book.

Want the game now, but I can wait a few more months for something a bit closer to perfection. Besides, with Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, MAG, God of War 3, and more it will be hard for me to find enough money or time to play them all.

Serious question/comment for all that complain about GT5's delay.

Why? What's the point?

Afterall, it is just a video game. It has no bearing on life, so if a development team wants to make sure their project (in which they are so passionately involved in) is the best it can be, so be it.

If car damage is the only thing delaying the release date, then I'd rather have them release the game NOW and then release an add-on for vehicle damage when they finally finish it next year.
