EyePet Not Ready To Play Until 2010 In North America
It would've been arguably the most unique piece of next-gen software for 2009 but now, it will have to settle for being one of the most unique pieces of software for 2010. Well, in North America, anyway.
Up until this point, EyePet was still scheduled to launch on November 17 but over the past week or so, we started seeing some disappointing retail evidence that it might not see the light of day until next year. The date in GameStop's database suddenly changed; it went from 10/17/09 to 04/04/10, which is a significant 6-month delay if it proved accurate. And unfortunately, it is indeed accurate as according to GameSpot, Sony has indeed decided to keep this cute virtual companion under wraps until April of next year. However, this delay only affects the US as European gamers will be happy to know that EyePet will still be available on October 23. Sony's issued statement reads:
"The North American territory has decided to take additional time to focus on the EyePet product and can confirm it will not be available this holiday. EyePet is an innovative and exciting new IP to the PS3 platform and SCEA marketing will spend additional time to continue educating consumers and retail channels, setting the table for a successful product launch. We will provide more details on an updated launch timeframe very soon."
So that April 4 date might not even be true, but at the very least, we know it's not coming this year. This would've been one of the more anticipated titles of 2009; using the PlayStation Eye, EyePet is capable of responding to a variety of different player commands and actions, and this includes learning songs, eating and playing, and even drawing (and then watching as the drawing on TV comes to life). We were definitely looking forward to it, but oh well...guess we gotta wait for another fun title.

Ah well, no doubt some highly educated MBA holder at SCEA HQ thought it would market better as part of the push for Motion controls/capture etc...

And what the hell kind of cop out is this? "SCEA marketing will spend additional time to continue educating consumers and retail channels, setting the table for a successful product launch".
Now that just sounds like PR jargon for "we dropped the ball and it's not ready yet".

One thing I want to know about this game, if anyone can answer, is that the camera is not an HD camera. Does it mean that the game is not 720p? or does it mean the pet will be in HD, just that your image on TV stays standard definition?

What, pray tell, are SCEA going to do to Eyepet in 4 months that will differentiate it from the European/Japan version? Perhaps it will get bigger teeth and muscles and an all-around more aggressive mood?
Pending an actual explanation from SCEA, I will continue believing that the people running SCEA have in fact all had common sense by-pass operations.
