Criterion Talks A Little Burnout PS3

Criterion's very own Alex Ward recently sat down to do an interview with Newsweek in regards to the newest entry in the Burnout franchise, but for the next-generation platforms. Off the bat Ward was quick to call the PlayStation 3 as Criterion's console of choice to lead the newest Burnout title off with. "We're working on them both. We're getting good results on both. But at heart, my guys, the Burnout guys, we're kind of specialists on the Sony system. Because it was always that way on Burnout. But we are doing some cool stuff on 360."

In addition to being completely expansive and open-ended, Ward says that's not the biggest thing Burnout 5 has going for it. Ward puts a great deal of emphasis on wanting to make sure that the car-crashes are as amazing possible for the upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. "For us, we're going back to basics on the car crash, and I think that's where we're spending all our time", says Ward.

Ward continues to talk about the new crashes, "The first crash you see on PlayStation 3 has got to go way beyond everything you've ever seen, beyond anything that we've ever done. Because every time we put our game out, people say, "It's the best crashes ever in a game." We've got to go beyond that now. We have to go beyond a game, and we have to go beyond a game car crash. That's what all of our work is focused on right now."

Ward also states that this next-gen Burnout has them going back to the basics. They're essentially attempting to re-invent the series in order to live up to their past releases. Additionally, Criterion hopes to deliver a title that looks like a second-year release, as opposed to a first-year release. So rest-assured, Burnout will be one gorgeous looking title when it hits the PS3 later in (hopefully) 2007.
