Ex-3D Realms Designer: Uncharted 2 Is "Epic Bad-Assery"
3D Realms is gone and all that remains are the shifting, wispy hopes that Duke Nukem Forever will somehow find a new home with a new studio. But who says ex-Realms members aren't still checking out the competition?
Former Forever director George Broussard has been talking about Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and his comments are those of a man who is completely blown away by a game experience. He has been gushing about the Game of the Year candidate over at the ShackNews forums, and Broussard says the game is "epic bad-assery" and that everyone really should "believe the hype." But at the same time, because the production is so unbelievably accomplished and polished, Broussard adds that "it's not even fair" and because Uncharted 2 is really that good, he finds the entire thing pretty "intimidating." Here are a few more of his awestruck statements:
"It's rare that I like games this much. There's virtually no fail in them. Very polished and well done on every level. These are master works, up there with the tops games being made. You may as well be playing great Indiana Jones movies.
Game of the year. Can't see anything else besting it, even the mighty Modern Warfare 2. We shall see. That's the battle, imo, for Game of the Year. I can't take any more. The game will set bars so high that every action game will be a disappointment to play. Much like Half-Life did."
Then Broussard finished it and simply said it's one of the "most amazing games" he has ever played and what the Naughty Dog team achieved is just "unbelievable." Then- "It's seriously hard to think about playing another game after this. It'd be like watching some random movie after just having seen Star Wars." Hey, we hear ya man; we kinda feel the exact same way. I'll be constructing an editorial of my own towards the end of the week, and there will be some compliments in there, too. ;)

MGS4 is one of the best games ever, and brought on an epic story!
but for me the Uncharted series (being both games) brought such emersion for me as a player, i cant ignore that! the way i felt while playing and the way i felt when finishing both games was absolutely astonishing! i remember i finished uncharted and it went up as my fav. game. then came MGS4 and i quickly said this is my fav. game. Later i played through Uncharted: Drakes Fortune again and about half way through i quickly realized it was my fav. game. needless to say Uncharted 2: among thieves has wow'd me further. These two games both brought epic tales and ND has become my fav. developer in doing so both creating awesome games that stand up to the hype and the nay sayers, and being a great company that is all about their work, instead of politics.
sorry for the rant, but as i said the uncharted series brings such great feeling of accomplishment, there is no denying it!

Some studio is going to pick up DNF and this guy is going to get back on the job, however after seeing what awesome tricks the ps3 can do he decides to start from scratch on making a new engine for ps3. However after 6 years of developing that new engine that looks better than uncharted 2, uncharted 4 comes out and puts his work to shame so he decides to start over again.
Or at least that is what I'm thinkin

I feel sorry for multi plat and for the X Bots... At least Gears is one redeeming factor for them. Whilst their Gears are stuck in 6th, we roared pasted 7th and 8th and 9th... onto 10 with Unchartered 3...

I am on my second U2 game on hard and still loving it, I was tempted to skip the cut scenes for time's sake but they are so good I just can't...

everyone has preference, but i must say the 1 liners are funny, and the "hollywood storyline" you mentioned should have notes taken on it! This is one of the best scripts i have ever seen in a video game, and there is no doubting that! hollywood should take advice!
and the actors in this game should all be doing the film. I watched what they go through to voice and they are doing stunts while voice acting to get the correct emphasis. these actors are really acting just set them as cast!

I hate Hollywood basically. Im a film buff more than game buff and make sure i watch at least 3 new films from anywhere in the world a week.
Everytime i watch a hollywood film, especially newer, i feel ill. No originality, no effort, all eye candy and no depth and they get so much more attention then something with depth, meaning, effort, well thought out narrative etc. Same goes for the music industry too.
Uncharted is a piece from that Hollywood pie. It has its one liners, its all eye candy, its all explosions etc. However, attention to character detail is fantastic for a video game, despite my tastes, its phenomenal. Voice acting is fantastic for what it is. The orchestral score is incredible. But, it doesn't save it clashing with everything else to do with my tastes.
I find the story to Ico to be much more meaningful, emotional and well thought out because it makes you think and never holds your hand.
Put simply, i prefer arthouse/more world cinema over Hollywood style or, on video games, Role playing/depth/constructive types to just shooting in great looking set pieces.

i guess im one for explosions then! although in my opinion the game portrays a much deeper truth than just a hollywood action esque vid! I mean the way i became attached to the characters, in both games, brought great emersion into the game, and made a much more enjoyable experience! both games are great and uncharted 2 has risen the bar and its simply fantastic, and the script is phenomenal!
i am glad you said aside from your interests and taste that the game is great, thats just shows it has undoubtedly done everything right! i love all aspects of the game, while some of your tastes in that stuff are not there it hit home with you on other aspects! therefor leaving nothing out and hitting home with everyone in some sort of way!

Least it's not the same old,'Hey the aliens came from underground or outer space and their destroying our planet so we gotta take'em out' type of linear storyline.

The graphics beats MGS4. Naughty Dog really proved we can have different mix of colors without having the game look like the infamous next-gen filter aka Fallout-y, Gears-y!
Whether your broke, recessed or whatever, there's NO excuse to not own Uncharted 2: Among Thieves!

Modern Warfare 2 will be a re-skin of Modern Warfare 1 with a few bells and whistles added, but the experience will be exactly the same.
Halo ODST? pffft... please
The only game I see that will compete with it is.... hang on.... ummmm.....
hmmmmm.....
Brutal Legend? No, wait, still awesome, but not quite Uncharted 2 standards....
ummmmm.....
Forza 3 was a big one, don't like the developers, but the game got high scores everywhere, still not GOTY material
Killzone 2? Infamous? I reckon they'll be high up there, but they still don't have Uncharted 2 qualities...
Wii games can't touch it. PSP, 360, DS, nothing I can think of on any of those platforms has shone brightly like Uncharted 2.
The only games to beat Uncharted 2 in terms of score are GTA 4, Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time, and matched by MGS4, Gears and Mario Galaxy.
Unless anyone else can think of a game released this year that will beat Uncharted 2, we have a clear winner across the board. Well done Naughty Dog on creating the greatest PS3 game ever!!!!

I'm still trying to think of others from earlier this year I may have skipped... K2, Infamous, Aion? (no, not GOTY material)
I truly think that it will be Assassin's Creed II, Halo ODST, Forza 3, Infamous and Modern Warfare 2 that will battle the top spot with Uncharted 2 for GOTY. If thats the case, Uncharted 2 has got nothing to worry about.
Will the decision go down to which is better (U2) or which is more popular AND good (MW2?)

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
