Bayonetta Receives A Very Rare 40/40 From Famitsu

Okay, we freely admit it: as much as we've loved the idea of Bayonetta since the first moment we laid eyes on it, we didn't really expect it to tear down perfect review scores.

And yet, that's exactly what it has done. The game launches in Japan this month (North American and European gamers have to wait until January), which means the premier Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, needed a review. We don't have the magazine in front of us but Sega's Twitter page gives away the fact that Bayonetta received a perfect 40/40 score. This is significant because Famitsu rarely hands out the coveted forty-of-forty; in fact, only two PS3/360 games from this generation (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Super Smash Bros. Brawl) took home that honor, and there have been only 11 perfects overall since 1998 (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time). Therefore, to have Platinum Games' slam-bang production in there is a very high honor and one that - in our eyes - wasn't expected. We had heard that the PS3 version has all sorts of frame rate issues and while Famitsu may have judged the 360 version with that score, it seems unlikely, considering the difference between PS3 and 360 owners in Japan. Besides, we'd hate to think that one version gets a perfect score while the other one gets a 25, or something. Either way, we're more psyched than ever to get our hands on that sultry witch with guns on her heels, spectacles on her lean face, and a cocky attitude to go with a curvy body.

The action must be fairly intense and outrageously polished. Then again, we hardly agree with some of the perfect scores Famitsu has handed out over the years (Nintendogs...really?), so who knows? It's still a good sign, though.

eeeeh Famitsu has become less and less reliable over the years

They're the IGN.com of Japan now

And we know IGN went downhill in 2007 or so

Famitsu is quite a bit worse than IGN. They gave Last Remnant a 38/40. Haze a 34/40. Then they go and give something like White Knight Chronicles a 29/40...

Their review scores don't make a bit of sense to me.

what's up with u guys? MGS4 well deserved the score; why shouldn't bayonetta? i think if the game was a ps3 exclusive, you could've given it more credit. some of u shouldve known things dont work that way. anyway bayonetta impressed me from the first time i saw gameplay footage. i was disappointed to hear about its delay because of heavy competition this coming holiday. its limited edition is a day-1 buy for me; i'll be ripping ALL 5 disks 2 my ps3 hdd :D

It runs fine on the PS3. There's probably a very slight edge when it comes to graphics on the 360. And when did PSX fans become graphics whores all of a sudden? White Knight Chronicles has some of the worst looking character models, but we won't deny it's going to be great do we?

The problem is, a game like White Knight Cronicles only gets a LOW ASS SCORE while Bayonetta gets perfect? kinnda redic if you ask me. though the demo is sic and I can't wait for this game it really don't think it deserves a perfect score over other great titles.

I agree with camaro300zx on this one. I have played the demo and I did not notice any frame rate issues with the game. The seen the side by side video and the only thing I noticed was the colors didn't seem bright on the PS3 verison. I didn't notice the issue when I personally played it. And as far as an inferior port goes from my hands on with the PS3 version I didn't experience of the issues people are concerned about.

The first Uncharted got a 36/40. Is Uncharted 2 even out in Japan yet?

yea, the first one on ps2 was really hard and the battle system was so confusing. but this one is very easy to handle, almost no learning curve, and the character design, in game graphics, maps, battle system, story, music seems all work together into a good piece, it is one of the best 360 exclusive JRPG so far, better than star ocean 4 imo.

Played the demo

Loved the music! lot better than DMC4 music.

The head of the girl doesn't look that small when you play ;)

WTH with those sonic the hedgehog rings xD.

Graphics aren't good for a next gen game also tbh the screenshots of the xbox version really look better compared with the demo on my tv hope the actual game fix that.

the gameplay is a weirdfest like taken from a hippie dream xD , its fun but I didn't like it I think the people that say this game was better than GOW3 on the e3 are hardcore anime fans they prefer things like the ones you are going to see in this game than the epicness of Kratos.

Well just to end for the impression the demos gives me..I think Famitsu are overrating this...but lets wait to the full game.

I would suggest that you dont count on reviews by magazines/websites or other gamers. Everyone have their own tastes and it would be better if you form your own conclusions. When haze came out, everyone said it was a piece of crap. I found it a decent game and enjoyed playing it. Same goes with halo, everyone else liked the hell out of it but i saw it as a decent game too. never got into though. Its a good measuring point to see how the rest of the gaming population has to say but you shouldnt use it as the deciding factor. Im not telling you what to do, just a suggestion.

40/40, huh? Good to know. Thanks for the heads up, Ben. I'll wait for more reviews before I upgrade Bayonetta from a "rental" to a "buy".

Besides I have a feeling they reviewed that 360 version on this one. And I stop getting inferior ports after 2007.

I'll keep Bayonetta on my radar. Now back to Uncharted 2.

i find it funny that every1s being so critical about the game (even b4 the review) and never played the full ver. demos r just works in progress and u don't get the same feeling like wat u get from the full ver. maybe it didn't deserve a score that high; who knows, but at least giv it the benefit of the doubt until it comes out

I think Famitsu rates games based on what big-name game guys are behind the game, rather than on the game itself. ex. Blue Dragon (didnt deserve it), MGS4 (deserved it), this.

The best thing the game has got going for it is that sexy nerdy girl (Im a sucker for nerds). She is only sexy when she is standing because she fights with guns on her feet and monsters out of her hair, that is also her clothes. No need to guess it's from the land of the rising tentacles.

also like I commented before the grahps look horrendous on the demo it appears the full game look like that.
