Play The Mystical Avatar Game On December 1

It should be a definite holiday blockbuster and not surprisingly, there's a corresponding video game that may or may not prove worthwhile.

On December 16, "James Cameron's Avatar" hits theaters worldwide, and sci-fi/action fans everywhere are eagerly awaiting its release. But if you're a little impatient and you want a taste of that beautiful, mystical atmosphere ahead of time, you can pick up the game on December 1. That's the date listed at Ubisoft's official website; the title is coming to just about every available platform so you needn't feel left out, regardless of what systems you own. You will be able to customize your own character, sample more than 20 different skills and 60 total weapons, and ride around in futuristic vehicles (and even on the backs of alien creatures). Furthermore, you will have the benefit of freedom from the start, as you'll be able to choose your side; would you rather fight for the RDA or the native Na'vi? We assume there will be drastic story differences depending on your choice, which should add some longevity to the gameplay. And don't be so quick to dismiss this one. We've seen a reversal of the historic trend that says all games based on movies are atrocious; games like Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Kung Fu Panda, and The Bourne Conspiracy have all been worth playing for fans of those films. Why can't Ubisoft give us another decent title?

But just for the record, I find it crazy pretentious to actually put your name in the title of a movie. I mean, we know you did it, James Cameron. We're certain you'll get paid...we don't need your name jammed in our faces, ya know?

I...honestly don't know what this movie is about, I know the sequel is called The Last Airbender or something and that makes me thing of the Avatar the tv show cartoon thingy but I don't think it's related or it's just really far away from eachother. @_@ need to find info on this

The Last Airbender is based of the cartoon Avatar, just as you thought but it's not a sequel to James' Avatar. James Cameron's Avatar is his own creation. Funny thing is he freaked when he found out M. Night's next was going to be called Avatar so he fought for the name and won, thus M. Night and Disney had to rename Avatar to The Last Airbender (which was the sub title for the cartoon series). I hope both these movies turn out well, especially The Last Airbender, the cartoon series is great.

@fstop

He didn't fight for the rights...he trademarked the name when he first started working on the movie and so M. Night was the one that got fucked...

I totally agree on his name being in the movie title lol hopefully he's not one of those people that refer to themselves in the third person (trust me they're out there lol)

Personally I think movie games are taking a trip into playable territory and hope this game follows suit, im a big fan of in-game customization when it comes to characters so hopefully its a buy for me ^_^

I wasn't thinking that...I like having a product that I am familiar with and even though i do keep up with movie news just as I do with gaming there are some people who don't...there might be some guy who's like I fuckin' loved Terminator 2 and wants to see what else this guy has done...

I understand you there. Whenever I see something I like though I go find out who made it and then follow them throughout career. But James Cameron is so HUGE! It's like buddy, we know who you are and what you do now, you rule the roost. I guess it's because he does everything from writing the script to designing everything right there with everyone else on his team. Still, we know who you are and what you do!

Holy crap, I thought you were joking until I looked on IMDB. What jackass came up with that title? The Official Game of the Movie?! I wouldn't touch that shovelware with a ten foot clown pole based on the title alone!

@ squirreldriver: don't call stuff shovelware without checking it out first. Peter Jackson's King Kong game on the PS2 is actually really, really good. I'm not kidding, I played it and it was a blast.

@ WolfCrimson
OK, I take it back, it's not shovelware. Just watched some gameplay vids and it looks pretty good. Well the Kong parts look fun. I'm just not that big a fan of FPS. I'll admit it, I just judged a book by it's cover. I am only human. =)

Althought I do maintain that it was an awful name to pick.

The movie looks just like a video game, I'm sure the game will look good esp if it has to live up to the hype Cameron has built up around the movie. Hope the gameplay is good, Ubisoft have the skills to pull this off I think.

Ben, for the record, I believe the movie is just called Avatar, and the video game is called James Cameron's Avatar. My guess is that the reason the video game is called James Cameron's Avatar is because there are other video games called Avatar. They are just trying to clear up the confusion.

...though people tend to ignore that part of the title. That's a contractual issue, though, since TC has nothing to do with making the games.

For what it's worth, so do Sid Meier (who has actually earned the right) and American McGee (!).

I'm not a fan of the practice in any case.
