Pachter Predicts Modern Warfare 2 Will Sell 18 Million+
Is it really possible for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to become the biggest selling game in history?
Well, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter doesn't think so, but he's still predicting gaudy numbers for the hotly anticipated sequel. According to the latest episode of GTTV's Bonus Round, Pachter says Modern Warfare 2 will sell 14 million copies in the "holiday quarter" and up to 18 million over the next year. Obviously, it depends a lot on marketing and - we believe - critic reviews, but we seriously doubt that either will be a problem for this particular game. Said Pachter:
"...I think most people think this will do 10-12. It really depends on marketing — if they blitz the airwaves and we see ads on every basketball game, football game, college football game, every beauty pageant...maybe 14. And how many will it sell in a 12-month period? Maybe 17 or 18...but over 20 million, that’s just hard to do. If we penetrate 25% of 360 and PS3 owners, we’re only talking about 12 million units, that’s the problem. So for this thing to do more, it’s gotta have a better attach rate than GTA San Andreas did. That’s likely, but double the attach rate? No way."
There's no doubt that Modern Warfare 2 will be the best seller of the year and likely the best seller of the generation thus far, but the best ever? That'll take some doing. We just want a bad-ass shooter that delivers the goods in spades and we have every confidence it'll do that...like we said, we only want awesome experiences, damnit.

That said, those of you claiming you don't like Kotick but are buying the game to support Infinity Ward have to realize you are supporting Activision and Kotick because Infinity Ward isn't some independent company with a contract with Activision. Activision owns Infinity Ward, so you ARE supporting Activision.
Activision makes more money on IP it owns like COD than something it is only publishing for an independent developer (like EA did with Brutal Legend).
As a gamer, I want this game and other Activision games. I dislike Kotick and think he is a megadouche, but as a gamer I want the games I want regardless of the company's president. I, however, am not deluding myself by saying I'm only buying it to support Infinity Ward.

boby kotic should write a novel.

Sorry, in a market place crowded with fps and 3ps games, I just can't get excited by yet another armed forced first person shooter. In a way this seems like Madden used to be on the PS2. Year after year EA would crank out essentially the same game with a roster update and they'd mess around adding a few frills here and there, and removing a few redundant features. And people bought it. Never understood why. This (MW2) is beginning to look that way too.
Perhaps I am wrong, and the game has a good campaign/story mode. Perhaps...but I doubt it.
Patcher has the most ridiculously easy job. Make predictions that can be right or wrong without consequence...Man, I want that job!
