DJ Hero Not Expected To Be An Instant Blockbuster
Many believe that despite its potential, DJ Hero won't see the same success - sales-wise - as its predecessor, Guitar Hero. Well, Activision is of the same mind.
According to VG247, Guitar Hero co-founder Kai Huang says that Activision doesn't expect DJ hero "to show blockbuster sales straight off the bat." He said as much during the PLAY Digital Media Conference in Berkeley:
"We’re not expecting a typical videogame curve where you sell the majority of the units in the first month and then it decays quickly. We’re expecting this to be the type of game that may came out of the gate a little bit slower, but continue to grow over time."
He makes the point that despite the "Hero" label, most people really don't know what DJ Hero is about; "they don't know what you're supposed to do." So Huang says they're going to focus on in-store demos to help push their new music title, and you can bet they're also banking on the critical reception to convince consumers. He also reminds us that the best-selling GH title to date is Guitar Hero III (12 million units), which means it took three entries in the series for the franchise to really explode. Hence, they're looking to do the same with DJ Hero...i.e., they're patient.

What I was trying to say is the guitar is more appealing and familiar to the masses. A turntable, not so much. I'm sure DJ Hero is a fine game if you're willing to try it out.

but, if it turns out to be fun, people will pony up for it just like they did with the guitar... but, it's going to take some time for sure... the store demo's definitely help because, that's how my friend was convinced to buy guitar hero...

I'm glad to see Activision failing to meet earnings estimates. Hopefully that a-hole in charge of the place will get fired.
