Modern Warfare 2: Most Pre-Ordered Game In History
Pre-orders are always a big deal for GameStop, which is why they should probably send a "thank you" note to Activision.
According to a statement made by executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for GameStop, Tony Bartel, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now officially the most pre-ordered title in the retailer's history. It seems GameStop has raked in around 2.5 million total pre-orders just in the US alone, and as Bartel told USA Today, "the number of pre-order reservations we've taken for the game is the highest for any title we've ever sold in our 6,200-store network." In more good news for huge holiday titles, GameStop is also reporting that reservations for Assassin's Creed II are up 10-20% over the original title, which launched back in 2007. That may not be too significant, though, if you factor in the gigantic difference in the PS3 user base between then and now... But it's still good to see and let's not forget that the first Creed ended up selling over 8 million copies when it was projected to sell only about 3 million. Yeah, it's clearly a good time to be a gamer.
Of course, Activision is still saying that Modern Warfare 2 will not only become the best-selling video game of all time, but it will also have the single biggest entertainment-related launch ever (including movies, music, books, etc.). At this rate, it just might happen.

Dislike it all you want; this is HARDLY the same situation as the '80s. Maybe you hadn't noticed, but the best games of every year also have the highest sales numbers. Last I checked, that's a GOOD thing.

Im just one man stating an opinion. I respect that you don't share it but my post wasn't just about MW2. It was about how the gaming industry is starting to look like dark clouds in the distance. First it was the Wii and all of its mass selling shovel-ware and costly attachments that did nothing. Then M$ dumping all but a few first party devs for timed exclusives and exclusive DLC. And now things like Halo3-ODST, MW2, L4D2, RE5 (the versus mode), and most sports games are telling devs and publishers that they can and will make huge profits for something that is little more than a pait job or new in game toys.
Call me a nut/mental if you want. Im just saying what Im seeing, and it doesn't look like any form of a good thing to me if stuff like this keeps up. But Im arguing with an admin, no way in hell I stand a chance.

But I think you're being far too negative. It'd be one thing if the mass-market games were inferior products, thereby bringing everything down with a developer's realization that gamers are willing to eat up mediocrity by the shovelful. But that has never been the case. Poor games perform poorly on sales charts.
It's difficult for me to be anything but hopeful for the future after the high of playing Uncharted 2. Furthermore, with games in the future like God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, and Final Fantasy XIII, I really don't see how the influx of casual/mainstream gamers is having any impact whatsoever on the inherent quality and growth of the industry's products.

In the mid (?) 80s the entire video game industry almost died due to lack of quality games (no joke, it was very close). Most systems back then could allow anyone to make a halfass game and sell it without a single quality test at full price. If Nintendo didn't have such a grip on what games where released on the NES and didn't have their official seal of quality, there wouldn't be any video game industry today.
Im not one to quote about this anyway, I was to young to remember most of the 80s. There a few books about video game history (Wiki might have the information)and they can tell the story much better than I. That's where I got most of my information from, so I highly suggest that you look it up.

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but please HAVE an opinion. "I'm not buying that crap!" is not an opinion. Why don't you like it? Have you played it? Oh, all games in a genre are all the same, I almost forgot.
I understand that some people don't get excited for certain types of games, but don't write off every game in that genre.
For the record, no, I'm not buying this right off, maybe a little down the road. FPS's are not my first love unless they do something special that appeals to me. I loved Killzone 2, but haven't played it in forever due to other games that appeal to me more like Batman AA, and Uncharted 1&2.
I'm not a fan of top-down RTS's, they do almost nothing for me. But I don't go into threads concerning StarCraft 2 and call it crap. I know it's not crap, I'm sure it's a well made game, just not for me. In those cases I just close the article and move on. Why can't you let it go. You don't like it, you say you don't like it (over and over,) but you don't say why, so who cares?
lol, sorry for the rant. Game on.

It is a great game I like Cod because it is a good product. It's MUCH akin to an Xbot because they forever defend and reason not to admit a superior product is to be had. Stop the delusion. Either you plain out suck at FPS's, you dislike the genre or you are just a brash HATER.

Everyone's definitely entitled to an opinion, just make sure it's your own opinion and based on the facts about the game itself. There's alot of people who seem to just want to go with the flow incase for some reason they'll be looked down upon by the 'real elitist gamers' who oppose this game for the wrong reason. Oppose Activision and their attitude towards gamers, fine. But don't hate a game you haven't even played yet. Even the most hardcore gamer's who have a superior complex will have to admit that this game is most likely gonna look good, and even if it's not your thing, will entertain millions of other gamers who just so happen to not be in the same league as yis, and from where I'm sitting thats not a bad thing.

In defense of the folks who are against all this, it is worrisome any time a game releases every year (yes I know there are two teams with different focuses) and there are those of us who hate to follow a trend and just avoid anything that goes uber-mainstream because that often means little more than a re-skin.
I recommend using your dollar the way you wish, I intend to. Meaning IF I get it at any point, it will be at a smaller price with no money going to activision and mainly so I can play it with my brother. Just use your bucks wisely people. Will it matter when Kotex is rolling around naked on his bed in a pile of money? No, but at least my money won't be the bills clinging to his balls.

I really despise the idea that if a game doesn't cater to the "hardcore," it's immediately inferior to those that do. Why do I get the feeling that a lot of the Demon's Souls lovers condemn Modern Warfare 2...?

You said it right! Its like we have folks who support people from underground to probably indie level, as soon as these SAME people become major or mainstream, their same supporters will start bashing them for going mainstream like with musicians, simple.
If Demon Souls were to go mainstream, it'll have the same hate. Remember the hate for Square going multi-plat....

I hate Kottick too, bout as much as I do any communistic, monopolistic, iron fisted douche-bag that has ever walked the earth. BUT a talented group, NEARLY independent, like IW deserve their reward for a game I will lose months of life on. Reward the talent I say.

I'm not sure if WorldEndsWithMe qualifies to this or not, but for me, seriously, I have a problem with matchmaking...I _like_ getting to know a community, maybe even working on maps collectively (Tested the Barbarosa map for UO, with the Afterhourz guys)...not a clan, just a bunch of people who casually played on a bunch of solid servers.
No dedicated server....terrible. No server browsing...what...the...BLEEP. Why? What's the point of that? I really do have a problem, not being able to play games by ping rate. That's pretty important if you can actually see those stats. Ever lag in an FPS? Usually goes away on servers with low ping...I s*** you not.
There are many more issues I have with MW...believe me, you don't even want to open this can of worms. But no, it has nothing to do with elitism.
As for Mass Appeal...I'll say it right here, I play WoW...my character has 162 played days. But...WoW has extreme mass appeal, and I still play the dog**** out of it. You are, however, correct, in that some things that have mass appeal are lame/idiotic/<insert derogatory adjective here>, after all, George W Bush did get voted into office _TWICE_.

Yes, people who download the game via PC...can play it on a network or a non-dedicated server. But those dedicated servers are not only a bastion of hack/bot/lag free gaming, but as you said they create a community of gamers (Not to mention the crazy mods/maps etc.. that come from such communities). My history does indeed stem from PC usage...however, why can't consoles have dedicated servers? Seriously, they're $300/ea now...you're telling me there's no commercial viability for dedicated racks of PS3/360 gaming servers?
Having the ability to choose the lowest ping available, combined with the variety that the brower + dedicated server combo provide, are essential to FPS games. Even the slightest amount of lag can ruin an otherwise phenomenal experience.
Beyond that, there will ALWAYS be piracy. It won't be stopped. Creating more and more restrictive, closed networks to try and combat it will only take away from the other users enjoyment of the product, as well as increase the possibility of misconduct from the parent company, and remember...the folks doing this are selling one of the hottest selling games of all time right now. Piracy bad or not, is that something they really have a reason to be worried about? I've pirated games before, but for demo purposes. The ones that sucked...gasp, I stopped playing and deleted. The good ones, I went out and bought. (Honestly..is that bad?? I'm not really 100% there...skates a grey?)
I still have to come back to it though Shadow, why remove dedicated servers and server browsing? It servers absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

Now to the general idea of servers. I hate how awful the entire process is. I understand the benefits but i simply don't care. I would rather deal with the occassionally lag-filled matchmaking system then have to search through server lists. That is precisely what has kept me out of online gaming on the PC for years. So its a two-way street the server thing isn't all upside either and clearly there are people who enjoy the new-school way of doing things.

You also forget, that it is JUST as easy, in fact EASIER to pirate for the 360 than the PC. Why, you ask? Because you need a serious hack team release in order to actually play the PC rip. Whereas, the 360 requires less than 2 hours of modding (no soldering, no mod chip) and you can download and burn to your hearts content. Let us not forget that the _first_ illegal copy of MW2 currently resides on the 360. NOT, the PC. You know why PC piracy is so rampant? Because people turned a blind eye to it for so long...just as is being done on the 360, eventually it'll be far to rampant for anyone to even hope to combat.
I'm sorry, and I don't mean any offense here, but you don't like server browsing...because of personal opinion. It's not based upon fact. Facts are, dedicated servers and server browsing guaruntee your experience. If people are too lazy, or not interested in taking a the brief few minutes it takes to learn how to navigate through it (Seriously...this is about as hard as turning on your PC...), that's well...that's terrible imo. And speaks volumes to the 'quick fix' mentality ruining a great many things for a great many people this day and age.

"PC Gaming will never go away...I hope you realize that. It still...to this day, creates the lions share of profit for developers (Do not go by NPD, they don't track online sales). To say _nothing_ of MMO revenue."
For some developers. sure. but not most developers. Infinity Ward makes most of their sales on consoles as do well... most major releases. Believe it or not publishers understand money. If more money was in the PC market the scene wouldn't be shrinking so rapidly.

What you should remember is that PC's have been part of the online community for much much longer than consoles, can be tapped into by any developer, with virtually no restrictions over the internet. And there are an estimated 228 million PC's capable of playing games worldwide ;)

Just take the comments from Naughty Dog about how Uncharted 3 will be even better then U2.
I believe Infinity Ward can and do adapt to this mentality if only on CoD MW games. What I would like to see though is the IW guys proving that they are more then this series by branching into another genre other than FPS's.

I played through the campaign, and it was awesome. Short maybe, but great nonetheless. And the multiplayer? I was addicted, for quite a while. I believe it was a combination of things, but it just got me. Especially playing with a couple of friends, leveling up and unlocking new things, the gameplay itself, etc.
If FPSs aren't your cup of tea, I wouldn't expect you to like it. They can hype it all they want, I was looking forward to this one before they had any info on it. If the multiplayer is at all an improvement over their previous and the story mode is better(which I believe will be), then I'll be happy.

I enjoyed the first Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare 2 looks great IMO. And quite frankly, I have more fun with COD4 than I do with any Halo game. Except Killzone 2, but seeing as it's PS3 exclusive, you really can't compare, it's on a level of its own now.
For those going to thumb me down, please refrain. As much as it pains me to give some of my money to Activision, it makes me happy to reward Infinity Ward for their hard work. They do deserve it.
Activision will not see a penny from me for World at War 2, I didn't even bother with COD World at War. Just looked like a WWII reskin of Modern Warfare with a few vehicles thrown in for good measure. And Nazi Zombies? Pfft, not interested, I got enough Zombie games to keep me happy. (Left 4 Dead not included, my God that was painfully average, not bad, but not great either)
I think Modern Warfare 2 does deserve the hype, but think about it. The hype is from us, the players, the fans. All that's come out is a few trailers, maybe some leaked stuff, but a lot of games do that. It's obviously not the marketing, its the hype created from the first Modern Warfare.
As for the night-vision goggles, it'll be interesting to see if they're any good, otherwise I've just wasted a lot of money. And last thing I want is to give Activision more of my hard earned money. I'd rather put it towards Heavy Rain, God of War 3 or Gran Turismo 5. Or even Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2.
If Activision don't bring something new to the table soon, they will see a huge decline in sales numbers and reputation. Maybe not this year, or even next year for that matter, but it will eventually happen.
I'm already talking up Lego Rock Band over Band Hero at EB Games, winning people over by telling them MTV are working on it and there are hundreds more tracks to download with better and more popular songs.
Alas, Rock Band is very unpopular here in Australia, and Activision is much loved for its Guitar Hero and Call of Duty.
Shame that no one knows about Activision and their monetary greed. I guess they're riding the "ignorance is bliss" business model for now.
Just keep in mind that it is the fans and gamers creating this much hype around Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward have a lot up against them. If it's too much like the first Modern Warfare, they'll be slaughtered. If it's too different from the first Modern Warfare, they'll be slaughtered.
It's tought being a games developer for a sequel, especially if it's a popular sequel. My condolences to Infinity Ward for going through with this dangerous task.
So, yes, buying it. I like the tight controls and the way the game feels. The story is pretty good and the graphics look pretty sweet too, even if resolution is sacrificed for frame rate, but I honestly like smooth gameplay IMO.
Quite frankly, short stories in a game work better for busy people like me. While Demon Souls and White Knight Chronicles look fantastic, I just have no time for them. So Modern Warfare 2 is a good choice for people busy like me.
One last problem, I'm getting the PS3 version (obviously) but all my friends are getting the 360 version of Modern Warfare 2, which means I can't play against them. Should I sacrifice getting the version for the more reliable console just so I can play against friends for a few months? I can't decide!!!!
Get the PS3 version and not worry about RRoD? Or play with friends on 360 but worry about RRoD and having to get the PS3 version anyway while waiting for my 360 to be fixed? Playing with friends or reliability???? I can't decide!!!!!!!!
