The Drought Is Over: RPGs Begin To Crowd The PS3

It happens every generation. Role-playing fans are simply forced to wait as just about every other genre in existence receives its fair share of excellent and top-quality titles.

But we've been saying it throughout 2009: the drought will soon be over; just look at the "coming soon" list, RPG fans. Well, as a reader reminded us, and as Andriasang further outlines, the role-playing fans are finally getting their just due as of right now. Yes, many are still on the horizon, but that horizon is looming large and let's not forget about what we already have. Demon's Souls turned out to be one of the most original, most technically accomplished RPGs we've ever seen, and now that Dragon Age: Origins is here, we've got another awesome RPG to play through (gotta love those totally different storylines for each class). Fallout 3 won multiple Game of the Year awards last year, Valkyria Chronicles was another brilliant breath of fresh air (and the sequel is coming to the PSP next year), Eternal Sonata finally arrived (and with extra content not seen in the 360 version), and Cross Edge satisfied the niche fans. But that's not all; look what's coming: Ar Tonelico 3, White Knight Chronicles, Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope International, Resonance of Fate (known as End of Eternity in Japan), Last Rebellion, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (now set for a January 9 release in Japan), and of course, Final Fantasy XIII.

Yes, it has been quite a long wait but if you can't find something to be excited about by now, you're simply not a role-playing fan. There appears to be stuff for everyone!

I am surprised you didn't mention White Knight Chronicles, though. Has the hype for that game been forgotten after having to wait for so long?

Also, Orvisman, I wouldn't classify 3D Dot Heroes as an RPG. It looks like a Zelda clone to me (not that that's necessarily a bad thing).

I'm getting Demon Souls once I get home. Currently I'm playing Eternal Sonata which is a lot of fun and I'm loving the character development.

Also gotta finish VC. Definitely a great time for RPG's

Now all we need is the announcment of KHIII and Elder Scrolls V

I am so glad you put this article up Ben. I was seeing red after your comment about buying Dragon Age on the 360 because you and Arnold both think it will be superior on that machine. I hope you saved your money because the 360 version is showing up some piss poor graphics Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to abandon your favorite system?

The PS3 version does look better but the frame rate is still slower than the 360 version. And the loading times aren't too significant in either.

I have the 360 version and Arnold has the PS3 version. I doubt anybody would have major problems with either; that's all I'm saying.

I just bought Dragon Age for the PS3 last night and yeah the frame rate can be a bit dodgy at parts but the game is damn awesome.

With a name like DA: Origins I am wondering if they are going to make a run at a series with this game. I am kind of hoping so.

i got the ps3 version, and really its fine. it has its fault but when comparing thw two on each console, its a toss up between which console you want it for. i only have a ps3 so it was a gimme, but for someone like Ben well thats another story.

i guess i just had faith in bio ware that when tey decided to push the date back it was because they wernt satisfied (that says alot). then when to moved it up they realized they had atleast the same game on both consoles, and they were very pleased with the outcome on there first time developing for the ps3 (which also says alot). I knew bio ware didnt wanna let the ps3 crowd down and with it's possibility of growing fan base we might see bio wares upcoming games on our system. just to mention im absolutely enjoying dragon age, i can not stop playing it. its one of those rpgs where you actually ask yourself after you fight if that was the right way to go through it, or when you get into a conversation if you said the right thing! i love it!

Ben may i ask y u did buy it on the 360? i dont care and i wont critiscize im just curious as to why?

in the interview on the ps blog im pretty sure bio ware devs. said this was the first in the origins series, and we would see more out of this story! id have to read it again to quote it but like i said its on the blog, and its a good read worth checking out!

Either way its rockin and deserves more! i love how bioware released two sets of dlc with the game as well. how awesome are these guys!?!?

Awesome, and I am doing the same thing about fighting and wondering if that was the best course of action, or convos and then second guessing my responses. This game is just fantastic and has a great depth to it, and yes the two free DLC packs that were with the game disc is great, but seems like a sly way of getting people to buy new instead of used which in all honesty is not a bad thing for a developer I suppose.

I will check out the blog to see what the story is behind more DA games.

OFF TOPIC: The EA online store in the US at least is having a 20% off sale for all in stock games. (Sorry if it's inappropriate to plug them here but thought people might like to know)

Oh Ben you're killing me. With the reviews coming out it looks like Dragon Age is a success despite the DVD gimp effect, but how could you support the 360 with a day one multiplat purchase on the assumption that it would be better than the PS3 version? I'm more than a little surprised...

Guys, don't freak out because I got the 360 version. I did it for three reasons:

1. Arnold recommended this as he noted the lesser frame rate in the PS3 version.

2. It was a good idea for me to have the 360 version, so we could produce a review that, while not exactly comparing the two versions, at least understands the pros and cons of both.

3. I haven't bought a 360 game in like, forever. Maybe all of 2009. My collection was looking crazy anemic. ;)

wow that gets me excited... it must be really good!

However after seeing previews, the game seems pretty dark with its environment which fits in perfectly with the game, and since its also a 3rd person (unless you are a bowman I believe), I feel its different enough from Oblivion but I could be wrong.

The game would have to be amazing to keep me from playing oblivion.

Even if you are an archer it is still 3rd person unless you are specifically in 1st person mode to aim.

Demon's Souls is by far one of my favourite action RPGs of all time. If not the favourite one.

That game is so damn good I have no words that do the awesome of it justice. You need to get it and settle in for a long session of gaming, frustration, anger, and then ultimately joy.

Dragon Age is very good. It is not like WoW at all considering that it is only 1 player. It is more like the game play of well, Baldur's Gate considering it is the "spiritual successor", Champions of Norrath-esque, and if you remember the game Summoner it has game play elements very similar to that as well.

I don't really consider games like Fallout 3 and Demon's Souls RPG in my eye.
Unlike JRPG which is the 'real' RPG.
Call me nuts, I played these kind of games before and they SUCK big time but that's just me, my taste is different, just like how everyone say The Sim is a fun game to play but I got bored after a few hours.

My RPG wishlist:
1) WKC
2) FFXIII

Just bout this 2, though will there be Disgaea 4?

Honestly though what is an RPG?

I believe it stands for Role Playing Game, in the games you mentioned you are assuming the role of another character, so shouldn't that be enough to constitute as one?

But I totally get what your saying... though I enjoyed fallout 3 (oblivion with guns).

Saying JRPGs are the "real" RPGs is like saying that racing sims (GT series) are the "real" racing games. The last I checked, Burnout and Need for Speed are racing games too, and Demon's Souls and The Elder Scrolls games are RPGs. Your comment hints at genre fanboyism. I understand snake, I had the same hangups when I started this generation, now I've appropriately sectioned these off in my mind into JRPG and WRPG because Fallout 3 single handedly changed my mind on first person RPGs. So I went on to get Oblivion (which I had rejected before) and after about 5 hours it was just addicting as hell.

While JRPGs will always be closer to my heart (Hell I started my RPG life on the NES) I can see how the RPG elements of WRPGs outweigh any FPS or TPS or button-action elements that make them what they are.

The only "real RPGs" are so-called pen-and-paper RPGs. Nothing on any computer or console can (yet) provide a true role-playing experience.

I'm not saying that they can't be great games, though.

Well this seems like the place to ask for some rpg advice then. I had Oblivion and Fallout 3 and wasn't really into either of them. I don't want to give up on all rpg's based on these two games so I'd love if someone could recommend one of these new, more up to date titles. Not that I'm saying that Oblivion or FO3 are outdated, I just found myself walking around way too much doing nothing for a very long time. Maybe that's the definition of rpg's but I'd definitely like to try something else before writing them all off. Ideas please?

if you didnt like the aimless walking that may take place in fallout and oblivion i think dragon age is the way to go. you do alot of walking but inside the towns, outside the towns its not so much open world. the great thing though when you travel to dif. locations throughout the land, as its quick traveling it will stop at merchants for you, or maybe youll engage enemies, its kinda a neat cus youd typically see that stuff when traveling anyways.

anyways dragon age is great, liek i said you wont do alot of wondering in the world, but will have plenty to explore in the towns. also the leveling is simple enough for anyone to understand and grasp but deep enough to keep it fresh! not to mention i like how easy it is to understand the stats of weapons and armor as well.

It seems you're like me; you need a good story in an RPG to keep you intrigued. I like freedom and exploring, too, but I know what you're saying concerning Fallout 3 and Oblivion. It just isn't my thing.

That being said, you should definitely check out some JRPGs like Eternal Sonata and other WRPGs like Dragon Age. Both of these games are very different from both FO3 and Oblivion, and certainly different from each other. Take a look at each and see which style intrigues you more.

In the future, definitely look for White Knight Chronicles and Resonance of Fate. Story-driven with a hybrid form of action/RPG combat...I think you'll like this better.

Well Demons Souls more than a rpg its an action game...and yeah its very hardcore but I love it.

Dragon Age its more of an rpg than Demons Souls I'd say first go with that one and if still you feel brave..later you can get Demons Souls.

Why isn't Oblivion a typical RPG? You sound like that dude that said Demon's Souls isn't a real RPG because of its difficultly.

I think you're confusing the term "RPG" with the term "tradition JRPGs".

Oblivion, Fallout, and Demon Souls are RPGs, Oxvial.

Yeah Demon's Souls is not for the faint hearted or the new to RPGing. Demon's Souls is the quintessential in your face over the top difficult controller breaking action RPG of the generation. It's definitely something to go into prepared for frustration.

in my country means like similar and I was refering to gameplay .

I found rpgs with the gameplay of Diablo ,Icewind Dale or Baldurs gate like the typycal ones.

Demon's Souls defeated me, I'm selling it. Not that it isn't a great game but I honestly don't have 2-3 hours to spend just dying in the same spot every day so if you want that game go find my auction on ebay and make sure you have tons of time and patience :)

Thanx to everyone for their help in putting me in the right direction with what my next purchase should be.
I'll try get around to all of em, Dragons Age will probably come first. I might wait till I'm more experienced with this sorta gaming before I attempt Demons Soul.
I've been keeping an eye on White Knight Chronicles and Resonance of Fate, alot of people hyping these up. I think Ben nailed it on the head when he said I need a bit more story to my game. Anyway thanks to everyone! :)

yeah makes sense. oblivion had a lot of story in it, thew main quest was somewhere around 30 hrs i guess. the problem though was there is so many side quests you always find yourself sidetracked, and then wondering and traveling off in a different direction (not a bad thing). the fast travel comes into play and helps alot here!

but yes your concern is you need something a little more linear it seems. somthing where your not overwhelmed with a ton of things to do, and dragon age will satisfy u!

Also, pretty much every RPG has a more leisurely pace to it than the average action game, which is one of the reasons why I like them. So, if it really bothered you to be "walking around way too much doing nothing for a very long time", RPGs might just not be your thing.

Well im currently stuck between an RPG and Fighter right now its either I purchase Tekken 6 or Demon's Soul's and im a huge fighting fan but I love the realism of combat depicted in Demon's Soul's so whaddya say? The short term thrill or ther long term headache? Someone please help me ^_^

Demon's Souls is running my life now. So if you want highly addictive gameplay, though initially frustrating, I would highly recommend DS. The online mode is especially deep and fun. Good luck!

Pffft...The reason for a lack of RPGs, is because they have been lousy at best. No mass appeal, and therefore poor sales. The only ones that have been good, are ones that have been wise enough to take on more of a FPS style.

(Just a little payback for all the RPGers laying on the FPS hate in other articles!)

all rpg's derive from dungeons and dragons. wrpgs have more emphasis on freedom and jrpgs have more emphasis on story, while both utilize a leveling system of some sort.

ok so we have FPS covered, we have TPS covered, we have racers covered, we have platformers covered(well slightly)
so when are we going to see the glory days of crash bandicoot team racing come back?
i really miss those style of games, hopping in a car, or space craft and blowing the sh*t out of your competitors.

i was thinking last night i wished sony would put up some arcade styled games on the PSN, like pool/snooker, poker, tetris, pinball but not ordinary pinball, pinball like the sonic pinball.

anyone remember monsters inc bowling?
its like normal bowling but once you bowl the ball you have to control it around certain obstacles.
than the icing on the cake, i would kill to have the sonic games on the PSN network.
well if those notes are true doubt it highly but if they are, we may be seeing SEGA games on the PSN.
the day that happens ill be needing a bigger download usage and HDD because i would go bloody AWOL on that.

@___________ Keep a look out for a racing game called BLUR! It should be kind of like Mario Kart and other games combined. I do not think we have satisfied the PLATFORMER DEMAND yet! There is only 2 on the market that I know of. DRAGON AGE ORIGINS is the game you should be playing because of your moral choices affect the whole story line. There is about 9 different endings to the game or maybe even more if you use the downloaded content. PEACE!

not sure about the rest in the list, I dont like much of cartoonish look game, hence never truly thrilled about VC, Eternal Sonata, all Tale series, Disgaea series, Cross Edge etc. and not expecting Ar Tonelico and hesitant about Last Rebellion

P.S. Demon's Souls will keep me busy for many many hours and i am also having a good time with Magna Carta II on 360, I put it very next to Lost Odyssey for 360.

Demon's Souls is Awesome I'm Soul Level 190 with 2 characters. I love Fallout 3 & want to play the game of the year edition & also want to play Dragon Age Origins but right now I'm too addicted to Demon's Souls & won't stop until I am Soul Level 712 with all trophies at least with 1 character. Royal of course because Soul Ray rules at the start. Only complaints are no bluetooth mainly, custom soundtrax or 1080p.
