Polyphony Started From Scratch With GT5, Spent $60 Million
It's true that we have to wait until next year to get our hands on Gran Turismo 5 but hey, perfection takes time.
In a new interview with Kazunori Yamauchi at the SEMA Show, we learn a bit more about the behind-the-scenes progress of this massively anticipated simulator. First of all, some stats we already knew about- Polyphony is aiming to have over 1,000 cars in the game, there will be over 70 total track layouts, and each car will boast 400,000 polygons (as opposed to 4,000 in Gran Turismo 4). He also tells us they basically threw out everything they used for the previous title and "started from scratch" so in his estimation, the game didn't take very long at all. Interestingly enough, Yamauchi was also asked - quite boldly - what has held GT5 up and he said quite simply that this falls in SCEA's department; as he says, "My job is to create the product, not sell it." I think that's something a lot of people often forget; it's the developer's job to make the game while it's the publisher's job to get it onto store shelves; unless the same company performs both duties, everything is separate.
Oh, and one final thing: all told, Yamauchi estimates that it took a whopping $60 million to create GT5! Well, he's likely confident that they'll make it all back eventually, and we're equally confident. Aren't you?

but for 60 million to be spent on a fairly 1 dimensional game, not in terms of graphics but rather it is a straight forward racing game, whereas GTAIV had so many aspects to perfect it is easier to understand spending that much
this only builds my hopes that this game will be in a complete league of its own

Actually WageSlaves, logically thinking it would obviously have to be more than 1 million sales. For one, they don't sell the games to retailers for 60$ because then retailers would obviously mark up the game further to make a profit.
Also I'm not sure, but there is a chance that the 60 million is just production costs and doesn't include promotion and such.
But I don't see how they can't make a profit... I'm even excited for this and I'm not even a big racing fan! (Burnout 3 was the only one for me)
Edit: One final note here... they definitely have recouped some of the costs through sales of Prologue.

True, my first post wasn't thought out completely but prologue itself basically paid for GT5 with approx. 4 million sold. Even if markup is 100% it comes out to bout 80mil and that isn't considering the people like me that got it off PSN and gave full profit to Sony.
Either way. They don't have a problem at all. Like I said if anyone can guarantee profits its GT (and Madden).

On the sim side of things, Forza 2 and NFS Shift only lasted about two months for me. Ferrari Challenge gave me three months of play. I am sure Forza 3 would be the same.
On the arcade spectrum of racing, Midnight Club gave me 3 months of enjoyment, and NFS Undercover about 1 month.
However, GT4 was a game that I played for over a year. It was always the case of one more car.
It's why GT5's 1000 cars is such a exciting proposition. Yes, there will be some cases in which 10 versions of the same car will exist, and that's fine. It just gives me the opportunity to hand pick the best.
With KY stating that all cars will have customization, it's about to be an endless experience for me. It's why I purchased GT PSP, I wanted a start on some of the cars, so I can spend more time with each machine.
Being patient sucks sometimes.

and a whole helluva lot of money it seems too. But I can't imagine a single person that buys it being disappointed so it should be pretty easy to make that money back. But does this mean that the product is done? If he says it's his job to make it and not sell it doesn't that imply that SCEA is sitting on it?

But there is still confusion over the same "20 locations, 70 track layouts" statement. Kaz is really serious about keeping this a surprise isn't he? ;)
There's also something about a 'Rewind/reversing game feature'. We're still weird on that.
And Kaz is a pimp:
"There have been cases where they've shown that interest [in paying to play], but I don't think we've ever shown interest in [accepting money to include certain cars]"

GT - Ugh for the last time Forza, can't we just get along?
Forza - No, you suck, I have 400+ cars.
GT - So? my cousin GT PSP has more cars than you.
Forza - But I have a much more realistic experience.
GT - Is that why everyone classifies you as an arcade racer?
Forza - *Begins to cry* SHU-SHU SHUTUP!
Forza - Atleast I haven't been in development for a gazzilion years!
GT - Well my Dev. is a perfectionist, maybe your short development span is why you're so mediocre.
Forza - I have damage, HA!
GT - as will I in my final product, not to mention GT prologue outsold Forza 2.
Forza - But, but, I have *Disk explodes*
GT - Forza, you've just been Gran turismowned!
